I used to go plane spotting here from this roof terrace from 1983 - 1989. I’m a real av geek and this was an ideal day out for me! I’m just amazed at the variety of different aircraft types, and the airlines - I remember all of them like now long gone Malev Hungarian, BMA, TWA etc; all consigned to history. Aircraft types now are all very alike; A320, 737, A321, 787 and 777s. Even the 747 Queen of the Skies is now being phased out from passenger transportation and where they still are in service, they’re mostly freighters now - although, Lufthansa, Eva Air and a couple of other airlines are still flying passengers on them. I really think the 70s, 80s and 90s were they hey day of worldwide aviation..

Very true about aircraft types during those times. I don't really watch planes that much now. I miss those times.

Cathy Parsons, I was also a fan of airlines' downtown ticket offices, a place to visit and to collect some items like paper timetables, promotional booklets, cards, in-flight magazines, among other items. An institution long gone. After a lot of moving, I ended up losing part of my collection, but still have some!

Thanks for this super video of memories...I can vouch for the quality of the Tupolev 154 - did a return London to Sofia in 87 on one.... Superb machine. Back then I always looked with longing at the Swissair A310's and the BA Tri Star's ( any Tri Star really ). The Tri jets just look the business. Had only flown wide body on the 747 at the time. Never got on an A310 - managed to jump on an A300 LGW - Almeria in the late 80's and finally got to go on a Tri Star at the end of the century LGW to NAP... Special aircraft the Lockheed. There's a magic in the way that rear engine melts into the rear of the fuselage.

I had forgotten Air Malta operated the wonderful B727. Wonderful video thank you. I was looking out if I could spot myself on that roof terrace. I spent half my life up there in the 80s. Happy times.

I am a fan of these nostalgic films from Heathrow. I flew the BA B757 a few times from Heathrow to Poland between 1989 and 1990 and I just loved that jet, the size and power, a real beauty!!!

Yes the BA 757's really knew how to climb out. The final BA 757 departure from LHR in 2010 was a special flight. The pilots gave the 757 a special performance full power take off, the aircraft was at 2000ft BEFORE THE END OF THE RUNWAY!

The variety of aircraft the Euro airlines used to bring in was brilliant.
    Just LH alone we had B727, B732, B733/5, A300, A310 daily.

Used to plane spot here in the late 60s on the queens building, I lived near barons court used to get the train to hounslow west then a e1 or e3 single deck bus if memory serves, I remember 1 of the buses was the Express straight into the airport, then up the stairs across the walk way and through the turnstiles where their was a charge seemed to remember sixpence (old money)

@ 20:15 - That 'Lufthansa' 'Boeing 727-200' takeoff is magnificent! Lufthansa’s old livery was the best; it looked "off-the-charts" on the most beautiful, sleek, & elegant of all the 'Boeing' jetliners, the legendary & historically pivotal 'Boeing 727'. The elegant and 'swept-back' lines of the 727 are so classic yet timeless, they would not look out of place among the most modern of current airline fleets. I mean, I’ve seen 'non-aviation enthusiasts' stop and take notice of a 727 in action.

I totally agree. And it is shameful, to say the least, what LH has since done to their livery.

Good to hear. I've switched on the bell!
Made my first ever flight (aged 5) from LHR (London Airport in those days). Destination Nairobi. Three on-route stops. Rome, Cairo, Khartoum. Aircraft: BOAC 'Argonaut' (Canadair North Star) - a heavily modified DC4 fitted with RR V12 Merlin engines. LHR has grown a bit since then!

Most of those British airways 747s at terminal 4 in the 1980s flew to somewhere in North America (New York, Chicago, Miami, L.A., San Francisco, Vancouver, and Toronto), somewhere in the Far East (Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taipei, Bangkok, Manila, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore), and Australia and New Zealand (usually via Singapore or Hong Kong).
The BA L1011s flew to the Middle East and Africa (Dubai, Rhyiad, Tehran, Tel Aviv, Cairo, Niarobi, and Lagos).
India and Pakistan had both BA 747s and L1011s flying there.
The smaller BA narrow-body aircrafts flew to cities all throughout Europe (Paris, Frankfurt, Munich, Madrid, Lisbon, Venice, Zurich, Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Athens, Istanbul, Warsaw, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Oslo, Iceland, and Dublin), Soviet Union (Moscow, Kiev), and domestically around the UK (Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Aberdeen).
I had a friend in London in the late 1980s who's dad was a pilot for BA, and this all is what I remember him saying

Dear David / Ian, Beautiful material and a real gem! I would appreciate if you can agree that I share some segments (where MALÉV aircraft are visible) on 2 closed Facebook-groups, one dedicated to the Tu-134, the other to the Tu-154 as a living memory of Malév which exists no more... Many thanks and awaiting your approval, Andras (alias Taxier1) .. and of course I will mention the credits due to you for these invaluable shots.

Many thanks for your kind words Andras, you may share the videos, but please link the entire video so that it reaches a wide audience, add time marks where the MALÉV clips start and I'm glad you enjoyed this rare footage.
