  • In this live class, I will be sharing my insights on bojutsu and jojutsu training, and what I consider the highest outcome of this training. As well, I go into training the five basic strikes with the Jo, detailing the fundamental differences of this weapon, versus the hanbo and the rokushakubo. (3:56) These strikes are critical in order to properly training the kata, and studying them frequently is important.

I absolutely love this video - it is so useful. I trained 7 years in Eskrima which is immensely practical but I always found that the Jo or long stick was infinitely more practical , more accessible , and had more possibilities. I have been training on my own learning from videos such as your and would really like to take my studies further.
    Thanks for a great video.

    Great video.
Here in Monreal, there's a ninjutsu dojo. The sensei learned with master Kacem Zoughari who himself learned with Hatsumi soke. Kacem lives in Japan for many years now.
I took few months lessons at that dojo and I switched to aikido for pratical reasons. Besides, I'm working basic bojutsu moves. So far, I know almost nothing about jojutsu.

Inspiring stuff. I love the jo and thought that Aikido had the monopoly of moves as in katas and stuff. But obviously I'm mistaken. After this I watched Kono Yoshinori and got overwhelmed by the flow of yours and his moves. Since I've always carried a walking stick to help me get around, the jo is where it's at for me. Since I'm now in my 70s I appreciate that working with the jo is accessible for those who do not want floor work. To master the 5 strikes you showed would mean so much in way of movement awareness for any ageing body. So simple yet not so -- but offering profound grounding resources for staying upright and mobile.

Dave, I appreciate your response and insight into using Jo. I'm happy to produce more Jojutsu if it is helpful and might inspire you to keep going! Be well sir, Adam.

@@YasuragiDojo I'll keep going for sure. First task is to go through your channel and explore the experiences you share so generously.

I find it odd you say Aikido has the monopoly on Katas (yes i know the ones to which you refer), i would have thought koryu systems like Shindo Muso Ryu , or standardized ones like NKRs Seiti Jo would claim that epithet ??

Much as I appreciate this video for giving me such a broadly definitive take on motion with the jo (I have watched it many times) I do have a question that reflects my frustration. Granted that I'm embracing the jo outside a larger martial arts context, I find that engineering my training/learning syllabus is difficult. Granted that I still work with the bo -- but setting gradated training challenges is hard to decide upon. For instance from the Aikido POV I can learn the 13 Jo kata (as I have & I practice it daily) but do I then learn the 31 jo kata or the non-flow of the 20 Jo Suburi? A choreographed session is very appealing for daily training. However, I think I can learn much more from sessions like yours in the video IF I had enough of them. Short. Focused. Fight logistical and applied. Detailed in hand and stance. However, to my newbie mind, performing an extended kata-like choreography with the jo that moves effortlessly from position to position like some integrated Jo Suburi has to be worthy of a coloured belt.

Dave, that's quite a lot sir!
I appreciate your dialogue and would suggest that you drill your basics - movement, hitting and regular resistance.
Then, look to one of the kata over longer periods of time, say two weeks and be granular with rhythm, timing between strikes and attention to your own biomechanics - simple things such as checking in to see if your knees are tracking over foot without you being intentional about it - or are you able to stop the momentum of your entire body at once, or is your upper torso or lower in motion, which thus may create over extension / spine torque - or check to make certain on strikes within your kata, you are not hyper extending your elbows, etc. Without knowing much, but understanding some, these would be my immediate suggestions. I look forward to further discussion.

I'm interested in learning the kata for this weapon
I've studied other weapons (bo, sticks, chucks, etc.) so I feel comfortable learning this without in person instruction, but I do have a question. If I take this up and start just practicing these basic movements, how many months should I spend before taking on the study of the kata?
Also- can you recommend any other good resources online or in manuals where I can see the kata done with some explanation of the purpose for the techniques?
    Thanks,
    Brian

It would be great to see these strikes done live with intent. I don't mean to sound rude but they do not appear convincing.

Thank you for the comment. However, this is a fundamental lesson on handling the weapon, and that was clearly stated. I am not teaching preemptive or countering techniques, rather a basic formula to begin handling the weapon with proficiency and helping people understand the unique characteristic of the Jo.
Please consider going to your local firing range and signing up for an introductory pistol course and telling the instructor that you don't feel their pistol orientation lesson is convincing because it lacks intent ... Imagine the looks you'd get? Similar progression to learning; this is merely orienting the student to the unique methods of this weapon.
Feel free to check out my other videos on Jojutsu, where I do in fact have an opponent striking at me and these principals are used in speed and application.

At age 61 I was trying to teach myself simple things and ended up hurting my wrist. So, I agree with the instructor here.

he talks for 7 minutes straight. go to 7:20, or look for something different entirely

    • @YasuragiDojo
      @YasuragiDojo  3 місяці тому

Sure, context. The people watching wanted to understand the difference, and those students were from varying backgrounds and experience levels. This was during my free courses offered at the beginning of COVID during quarantine. The differences are important. If you think that a proper introduction to a weapon, along with explaining the characteristic differences of this weapon to another - and in a video accurately titled 'Jojutsu basic strikes and reflections on bojutsu training' - should be anything under 7 minutes, then indeed; you should go look for something different entirely.
