I can't stress to people enough how important hands on projects are for people trying to get into the industry. Documenting the journey is equally important because it gives employers something that they can review and look beyond a prospective employee's resume. More times than not, people who are struggling to land jobs aren't taking advantage of this strategy.

Ace efforts to obtain the bachelor’s degree while engaging in projects with the Department of Defense Code Breaking Challenges. Man, I just discovered your channel this week and have been going hard watching videos. Super informative and helpful for someone like me who is just getting involved in the industry, appreciate the effort you put in!
As someone already working in the field, I still find videos like this useful to determine what I might not be doing in my current role. So I can get exposure to other services and technologies that I may encounter down the road.
Do you feel by completing these type of projects will add value and experience to one's resume when pursuing an entry level position in cyber security?
@@MrDmacc1 Yes. A huge part of learning cyber security is just book smarts. But that really doesn’t help when you start working hands on with security tools. Additionally, most learning labs are in very controlled and meticulously prebuilt environments. Doing custom projects like these not only expose you to each tool and concept, they show you other areas that you have never thought you needed to improve. Also, a lot of employers want to hear that you have actually worked with at least similar tools to what they are using, so you have an idea of what to expect before the on the job training, which is normally quite minimal. Most of my experience in my current role actually relied on previous work I had done in Azure. That or the training modules offered can be out of date. So expecting to go from zero to hero when you get on the job is probably not the best strategy.
Thank you Josh I really appreciate this information, I'm a cybersecurity student and landed a job working for a tech company that is going to be teaching me their way of using some of these same systems/projects. Hey Slim! I actually made a video that kinda talks about this a little bit. See mine here: ua-cam.com/video/UwoFfTwulJo/v-deo.html I would also check out Sandra's video on the topic, it's probably better than mine tbh: ua-cam.com/video/MvB5I1Tb8CM/v-deo.html Best of luck!
Am in the process of building an Siem with Wazuh and UA-cam just recommended this video. Nothing new though, we all know Google is tracking our searches 😅. Let me try your methods as well and see.
Hey Josh!. ! You're one of the best content creators out there, please keep up the great work. Do you happen to have more of these CyberSecurity (Blueteam focused) labs on your patreon? I have gone through your technical Demo and kinda want more lol.
Hey Josh, you have been a blessing showing us the way to break into cyber and IT. The only thing is that I would like to know about troubleshooting scenarios after following the Active Directory video, because they might ask stuff about that in interviews. For example, is it possible to set up my own home printer after the lab is done and if I want to use imaging software if the enterprise gets new hardware or replaces a damaged computer, if a user experiences difficulties with connection or printers, etc.
Hey Pablo, thanks for watching! Learning troubleshooting is kinda tough. There _are_ kind of general approaches to troubleshooting (you can probably google these), but a lot of really specific troubleshoot comes from experience (which can be gained in your home lab). _> is it possible to set up my own home printer after the lab is done_ This is possible and it would be a good thing to practice. It might take some understanding of networks in order to get the virtual machines to talk to the printer, but it's definitely possible. Would be a good project to learn from and Troubleshoot. For the stuff you're interested in/want to learn, it's best to just try to set it up and simulate those scenarios the best you can. At the very least, during the interview, if you can't answer exactly, if you explain your thought process and/or talk about what you've simulated/done, you can get partial or full "points" for the question. Hope this helps!
Hi Josh, I found your videos very useful. I am looking for a new role in cyber sec and as you said these 5 technologies are being asked. I am setting up my labs now. Thanks
Thanks for the vid. I am very new to IT and I have a question about job stability in cybersec. When you are working in cyber security for a company and there ends up being a breach is it very common to get fired for that? And if you do get fired for it do you also get black listed from the tech field? Thanks again.
_>When you are working in cyber security for a company and there ends up being a breach is it very common to get fired for that?_ This happens more in private orgs and it tends to happen to the CISO. It also depends on how large the breach is as well. It's common, but not for non-ciso personnel. It really depends, but I wouldn't be to worried about it if I were you. _>And if you do get fired for it do you also get black listed from the tech field?_ Absolutely not! It depends on the situation of course, but people generally understand that it's not always the CISO's fault. Often times, when you get breached, the people involved should "get stronger" from it in an "Anti-fragile" manner. That is, they get experience and battled-hardened so they can be better prepared next time. It doesn't make sense to fire the CISO, but it's often done as a PR stunt or to force accountability to maintain public trust or something like this. Highly unlikely to get blacklisted unless you were actually negligent or doing something criminal. Thanks for watching, and great questions :)
Thanks so much for these Josh! Two areas of cyber I’m interested in but notice don’t come up much on your channel(correct me if I’m mistaken) is pen testing and threat Intel. These projects all look great for all round knowledge but anything you or other commenters could suggest to build experience in these areas? Thanks for the great vids.
This is pretty good. Some of these projects can even be used for Devs who want to be backend developers. Security is such a big issue for developers that understanding it can go a long way in getting a career in web development. In your opinion, besides the Rest API, which one of the projects would be good for developers to do and know?
_>Security is such a big issue for developers that understanding it can go a long way in getting a career in web development_ I can 100% see this _>In your opinion, besides the Rest API, which one of the projects would be good for developers to do and know?_ Probably a more robust version of the FIM. Maybe something that makes use of the Windows auditing function and logs the subject who made the change and date and time and stuff. Maybe integrate it with another API for advanced alerting. Something like this could be fun. Just make it better than the crap one I made, haha
@@JoshMadakor I may build one. It seems like it's going to be a great portfolio piece as I will probably moving into backend development/ fullstack nxt yr

I would also check out Sandra's video on the topic, it's probably better than mine tbh: ua-cam.com/video/MvB5I1Tb8CM/v-deo.html
Best of luck!
Thank you Sir 🍀
lOVE U MAN.
Love you too chief lol 😂😎
Am in the process of building an Siem with Wazuh and UA-cam just recommended this video. Nothing new though, we all know Google is tracking our searches 😅. Let me try your methods as well and see.
Lol, thank you algorithm :D. Thanks for watching too!
Very good information 🥰🥰🥰
Thank you Vamsi! Thank you for watching!!
Very helpful 👏
Hey Josh!. ! You're one of the best content creators out there, please keep up the great work. Do you happen to have more of these CyberSecurity (Blueteam focused) labs on your patreon? I have gone through your technical Demo and kinda want more lol.
Hey thanks so much! I don’t have any in patron but I’ll be releasing more probably by March? 🥳
@@JoshMadakor I’m hyped and waiting! Thanks
So can I steal word for word with the “examples you have for the resume you just showed” lol. It sounded very professional
Lol sure, I don't mind 😂
@@JoshMadakor lol good looks brother.
Hi Josh, the text experience for the Rest API is the same as for the Vulnerability experience
_> is it possible to set up my own home printer after the lab is done_
This is possible and it would be a good thing to practice.
Useful tool for myself to become a fully qualified cybersecurity professional one day
Hi Josh, I found your videos very useful.
_>When you are working in cyber security for a company and there ends up being a breach is it very common to get fired for that?_
This happens more in private orgs and it tends to happen to the CISO. It also depends on how large the breach is as well. It's common, but not for non-ciso personnel. It really depends, but I wouldn't be to worried about it if I were you.
_>And if you do get fired for it do you also get black listed from the tech field?_
Absolutely not!
Awesome!
You said you made a video on how to set up a SIEMS environment and active directory, and the Azure sentinel please I need the videos
_>Security is such a big issue for developers that understanding it can go a long way in getting a career in web development_
I can 100% see this

Probably a more robust version of the FIM.
