Hi Mr. Josh Madakor I am an entry level full stack developer improving my networking skills to build a full stack SIEM on my Cisco 1921 router. I just wanted to say your videos are amazing as always. Thank you for giving me the interest in networking.
@@JoshMadakor STUDY: I agree with most if not all of your points when it comes to education. College is pretty much a scam unless it's in a field that will give you a great return. I also feel the employability framework is on point too. It's usually not just one thing that gets you hired...it's a combination of things including the type of job you apply for and the type of industry you are in...the only thing we may differ on is the number of certs for beginners. I honestly believe that 3 or 4 may be needed in this environment even when you have a degree...and those certs have to have a certain role. 1 cert that is industry standard, 1 that teaches you about the role and 1 using a tool or platform you will be using. For example: The CompTIA Sec+, your Cybersecurity course, and the Azure Security Engineer. The CompTIA Sec+ is industry standard and is expected when applying for security roles...you can add the Google Cybersecurity here with the Sec+. Your Cybersecurity course teaches the how in cybersecurity and what pertains to the job. It's not industry recognized yet but is a wealth of knowledge...similar to hack the box defense certification. The Azure Security Engineer is a cloud cert...you could also add AWS SAA/SysOps here too...most cyber jobs will involve the cloud in some way so being certified in it will go along way.
"STUDY" I started watching your content a few years back, solely due to fast-tracking through WGU. Because of the hours of watching your content, I got both Google IT & Cyber Security certs, I took your $500 Cyber Security course and took the CompTIA Security+ in a few weeks. I landed my first IT job in October because of my social circle. But your course labs and all the CompTIA certs helped me not feel like a complete impostor, new in the industry. All my coworkers know about the benefits of WGU. I am not sure if certs are most important. I feel like experience comes first. Thanks, Josh.
STUDY I agree with what you said since different careers have insanely different requirements for entry. What I love about cybersecurity is the fact that the degree can be overlooked when you have more experience, better projects or just good networking skills. It’s true that connections play a really big role in your success, but I’d like to believe that at the end of the day, your skills will be what makes the true difference.
Study I'm just starting a new endeavor in life in cybersecurity with absolute 0 knowledge prior. People like you who are honest and help the new beginners need more praise.

Great video as always! I’m halfway completed with the MSCIA at WGU and gearing up to do the OA for D488 (CASP+) after putting in four months in my first term. Net and Sec+ earned on deployment with the army and now CySA+ and PenTest+ recently earned too. Hoping to accelerate but if I can’t then I’ll be done in two terms. I completely agree with all of your points. I felt out of place paying $20,000 for a bachelors degree at a brick and mortar university that I didn’t even use. It was more of a check in a box I guess. Since 2022 when I discovered I had a general interest in IT and getting my first job as an IT tech, I decided to go for it and leverage it through WGU now to make a pivot into cybersecurity.
STUDY Online schools are a great opportunities for getting/finishing your degree. In the end, your experience outranks your degree/certifications like you said. Having a home lab, internships, or any real word experience is key for clutching that job in the cybersecurity industry, showing proof to your potential employer you got the chops to succeed in the role!
Study: watching you helped me finally apply and make the commitment to getting my bachelors in cybersecurity after nearly 10 years out of school. Thanks for all the helpful tips and information.
Seriously considering the Software Engineering program at WGU. I started out as a web developer and want to get back into it but at a higher level. This gives me some inspiration. Followed you for a while. Thank you. STUDY.
STUDY - Competing with other applicants is a struggle, and the one thing I realize in being involved in tech is that I should be doing more for myself, do everything that separates me from the common folk, and coordinate with peers that elevate each other.
Study 👍 i really appreciate the delivery and authenticity in which this video addressed as well as the details , leadership and honesty that this video enveloped..

STUDY, I agree with your point of view. Spending large amounts of money to acquire a degree will not matter if it doesn’t meet the criteria of the real world job needs. It makes more sense invest in industry standard certifications and educational institutions that don’t promote going in debt for it.

I didnt think they would have taken any of the classes since the degree was from 2005...but they took ALL of the gen ed classes. The IT classes have an expiration date of 5 yrs but I guess gen ed classes don't have an expiration date. Along with the AWS Cloud Practioner, the ITT courses completed almost 1/3 of the degree! STuDY I fully concur! Excellent breakdown. By following your recommendation I will absolutely reduce the cost in getting a degree and will help me with my job hunting
STUDY: very true statement about "tiers of things" 15:13. As someone with zero experience I landed helpdesk job and found an older video of yours about WGU IT Bus. Mgmt, just a month or so ago. I'm following that plan. It really helped, since I suck at taking exams, BA in cybersecurity was ruled out.
Study This channel is an incredible resource for all levels of understanding. I always learn something new with your content and it's very short and digestible. Thank you for all you do.
STUDY - I work in tech, and only have a non-tech degree. I don’t have certs, so I can’t relate directly to Josh’s views. But, I think what he said makes sense. The reason you land a job can be random. One of the hiring managers that interviewed me saw that I had a Philosophy degree. I think he also studied that in school, and thought it could help an employee with logic.
STUDY, I’m wanting to break into cybersecurity and boy am I overwhelmed by the information. Your videos have helped a ton! Currently doing the Google cybersecurity course on UA-cam. I’d use the prize to buy your course.
STUDY: I think degrees help open doors, but in cybersecurity, hands-on experience often matters more. I earned a bachelor's in cybersecurity from a small college, and while the degree helped with interviews, it was certifications, personal projects, and CTF participation that got me hired. Degrees provide a foundation, but practical skills often outweigh prestige. I’ve seen people with strong portfolios and certifications like OSCP land jobs faster than those with advanced degrees but little experience.
STUDY As always great info. Starting in IT is not hard but you have to put in the work. The field is in constant growth so that means you need to keep growing.
STUDY As someone who is looking to get into the cybersecurity field, I am impressed with the variety of different specialties one can get into. I loved the way you presented the information. Thank you!
STUDY Education is the key. Cyber security is a complex field. I appreciate the views your imparting with us. Additionally I think we should start by figuring out what we want to do under the larger umbrella of cyber security. It's a somewhat large field with different skill sets required to fill different roles. We can focus on encryption, system hardening, information security, security policy, network defense, ethical hacking, security testing, etc.
Study Big thumps up! After listening to you, I think I'll still consider WGU despite of it's downside. I've take note with the employee framework. I think it's very helpful.
STUDY, i agree with you mostly because i have less experience, i just might add that the hagiarchy differs from once country to another and from one company to another but for the most part its close to your pyramid. I've been looking for a degree and i thought WGU is the only option, it doesn't suit me because you have to be in the US, but this video showed me more options, thank you
Study. I agree that tech degrees can be helpful for a tech career, but I also believe it’s not the only path in. Currently, I work side by side with someone who has a Computer Science degree, while I have a degree in Business Administration. To top that off, my manager at Apple has a degree in Communications. The pillars you talk about are extremely realistic and I know that by experience.
STUDY : I am with Josh in a way on this one. Yes, a degree is required and listed on many job descriptions, or applications, however someone with the actual skills has the ability to get past the degree requirement if they don't have one. I think having a college degree is a great thing to have if you want a management or higher level role in management. Some people don't want management so that many not be important for you. Now I do see people with degrees getting hired easier, or quicker if they have a degree, others still struggle even while possessing a degree. I personally think your resume, ability to communicate what you know/skills are communicated effectively, paired with good interviewing skills, goes along way if you don't have the degree. Best of luck.
STUDY I am currently in a job search. I had 4 interviews since I graduated from my masters in may 2024. From these interviews I could tell that companies are looking if you have time experience and If you dont have any work experience, what projects or labs you do on the side. It doesnt matter which university you get your degree from so I would say go for the degree that cost you less and focus more on working on your skills on the side.

You make a great point. I’ve noticed more companies are dropping degree requirements in favor of skill-based hiring.
Study
I am agree and you are absolutely right, people should be allowed to study at an affordable fee. Goodluck!
STUDY
I agree-cybersecurity is a field where proving your knowledge through action speaks volumes over degrees.
Study -- your videos inspired me to take the leap into cybersecurity. I am totally agree of what you've said. Thanks.
STUDY
As always great info. Starting in IT is not hard but you have to put in the work. The field is in constant growth so that means you need to keep growing.
STUDY
You’re absolutely right. Hiring should focus on what a person can do, not where they studied
STUDY
I resonate with your take. I’ve been job-hopping without a degree, and no one has cared so far.
STUDY
As someone who is looking to get into the cybersecurity field, I am impressed with the variety of different specialties one can get into. I loved the way you presented the information. Thank you!
"STUDY" I appreciated the example you gave about companies focusing more on portfolios and projects during hiring
STUDY
You’re spot on! Online learning and bootcamps are making degrees obsolete in many fields.
STUDY
Education is the key.
One of the better put together mini road maps to getting a job that actually makes sense.

The section where you discussed how outdated curricula don’t align with industry needs was very insightful
STUDY > I completely agree with you-degrees aren’t the golden ticket they used to be. Employers now value skills and experience more.
STUDY
Your channel inspires me so much and you have so much knowledge to share, you break concepts down and make it look so easy. Thank you!
This was very insightful.... I like your perspective about getting a degree. People should be allowed to STUDY at an affordable fee.

Big thumps up! After listening to you, I think I'll still consider WGU despite of it's downside. I've take note with the employee framework. I think it's very helpful.
Study
Facts! I agree entirely. Good comparison and useful tips/tricks. Appreciate it.
"STUDY" I think Cybersecurity changes fast, so staying updated with skills is more important than where you learned them !
STUDY, i agree with you mostly because i have less experience, i just might add that the hagiarchy differs from once country to another and from one company to another but for the most part its close to your pyramid.
I've been looking for a degree and i thought WGU is the only option, it doesn't suit me because you have to be in the US, but this video showed me more options, thank you
STUDY
I am agree of what you said. I am so pumped and ready to learn more, glad I found your channel.
STUDY
You nailed it when you said that some people thrive better through alternative education paths
STUDY
Degrees are just a checkbox for many recruiters, but real-world experience is what counts.
Study - thank you for this video, I'm totally agree with your valuable insights. Keep it up!
STUDY
You’re correct-skills are what truly matter. Degrees should only be a stepping stone, not a barrier.
STUDY
I appreciated your point on the value of certifications like CISSP or CEH over traditional degrees in this field
STUDY
You’re absolutely right! Hiring should focus on competence, not credentials.
STUDY
Your argument is strong. Employers should evolve to recognize talent beyond academic qualifications.
STUDY The way you explained the mismatch between education and job market expectations was very convincing.

Been watching quite a few of your videos and it is been a great help. Thank you for your content.

I am currently in a job search.
