- I modify the existing door to change the way it opens. I could have used the existing hinges but I wanted new hinges to match the finish of the door hardware. Just used a few simple hand tools; wood chisels, screw driver, Pull saw and putty knives

Thank you for this!!! Only video on UA-cam that breaks it down in easy steps :)
I’m attempting to do the same, change the swing of my bathroom door to make more room inside.
Thanks. One thing I left undone is the door stop trim. Normally it would also get flipped because the paint might chip in places when the door strikes the angled part of the trim. I decided to leave it alone for now because I have other priorities.....and it so far has not presented any issues. It would if the door was slammed repeatedly .
Good luck with your projects
This is exactly why and what I need to do. Super helpful! Thank you.
Getting ready to reverse my bathroom door. This video was so helpful! Appreciate your step by step style! I hope it turns out!
Thanks for the tips! We are planning to do this in our garage soon! Thanks for the help!
Thank you so much for your help sir! Now we are able to switch the opening direction of our front door so we can close it if we will buy our dream L-shape sofa that extends a few inches to the door space.
Cheers for the help! A video less than 45 minutes long to break down a job step by step.. 🇬🇧
excellent job dude
Very helpful, thanks!
Nice job.
Great video. Thank you
Great video and instructions.
thanks
Thank you for the video… my wife won’t be angry anymore… about the door swing
You are now an happy swinger couple... Well... good for you!
thank you!
How many feet of clearance space should you allow for an outward swinging door?
Am I the only one that is wondering if there isn't a part kf the door jam that needs to be adjusted so the door actually can go the other way?
my door does not have the same structure on the other side . ( i mean the other side is not mirror copy of this side ) can i still do it . i hope i made myself clear .
Thanks for this video! Exactly what I’m trying to do. Question. The “stop molding” on my current setup is at approx. 1-1/4” deep. On the opposite side, it is approx 2” deep. Basically, the stop molding is not centered in the jamb. Any recommendations on what to do to have the door shut correctly, so it is flush with the frame. Thanks in advance
I think your only option is to move the molding or add additional molding to go from 2" to 1-1/4" on the other side. Adding a 3/4" strip shouldn't be that bad. Since it has been a year, perhaps you can follow up with what yo did.
What did you use to drill the hole on the other side of the door jam?
Cool !!
Realized over the Christmas Holiday that the door needed to open out ....hahaha
Hi! Great Video! Could you explain the process of "trial fits" to determine placement of hinge on door frame? (3:35). Did you attach hinge to door frame, put both sides of hinge together with the pin, held door in place (shims at bottom?), mark one hole in frame, attach hinge to frame with one screw, then swing door to check the fit? For bottom location simply mark holes as the top hinge was the one used for placement. Or am I way over complicating it? Thanks!!
I attach the hinges to the door and mortice them inplace, then I set the door in the frame and use shims to get the height. I then mark the top hinge on the frame and screw the hinges into the frame with just two screws each top and bottom. then test the fit...it usually will not fully close until the frame is morticed to recess the hinge but it give a good indication about what needs to be adjusted for the proper operation. I have done this many times and I always feel like I just get lucky with it.
Thanks for the quick response! Got it! Door is from 1938. When cutting out the mortice three coats of paint chipped off. White, beige and maybe green. The green is more likely a reaction with the metal. The original door is beautiful cherry or mahogany. Probably all the interor doors are such. That's a project for another day..... Thanks again.
I bought a used door everything lines up except the hinges. What is best to do move hinges on door or wall? Basically notch out door or wall for hinge placement?
So, I guess you already did it...
What is your verdict?
Let the door hinge and adjust with the frame or the other way around? Or seem about the same?
I'm getting ready to do the exact same task. Thank you for this video, man. It was extremely helpful. Can I ask how you felt about the results with the Durham's water putty?
The water putty takes a bit of a learning curve but I have used it for decades and it is great.in my opinion
Thank you, I appreciate the feedback. I've mostly only used dry dex (and only on drywall) so I don't have any experience using putty on wood yet. @@neuromanglers
Looking to do this with two interior French doors, do you not have to remove and replace the stop molding?
It would be proper to change the stop molding. I did not in this case because the door stopped properly against it and it is a door that is not closed often. It would be easy to change the door stop and I might if it ever presents a problem
I was lucky my stop molding wasn’t a quarter round but a furring strip with 90 degree edges on both sides. Just added another thin strip of wood against existing stop mold to the other side. Puttied, sanded, painted and that covered any signs it was two pieces joined.
How did you carve the new hole within the striker plate?
I used a utility knife to scribe the outline and a chisel to gouge it out
When I’ve done this before I used a hole bit in my drill then mortised out the shallow areas.
Jus asking so I can understand, why didn't you use the same hinges??
I could have used them, decided to use new hinges since the originals were rusty under the paint and worn from 50 plus years of use
Do you need new hinges? You can't just flip the old ones the other way?
I could have used the old hinges but elected to install new hinges for improved cosmetics
@@neuromanglers i like how you opted for new hinges. It looks like bigger hinges made it easier than having to patch the hinge hole on the door.
This method makes little sense when by simply reversing the door frame the problem is correctly solved as if that had been the case all along. Simply remove the hinge pins and remove the door, then carefully remove the casing trim with a flat pry bar, then use a reciprocating saw "with a metal cutting blade" to cut through the brads holding the door frame to the studs on either side, then you can easily rotate the door frame and re-shim it to a proper fit, drive in new brads "you can reuse the same holes in the frame if you slightly drive out the brad remnants with a counter sink prior to carefully extracting them", then just re-fit the casing trim, and you're done. I just did this yesterday and the door can be closed with the touch of a finger. A few brads and a little shim stock are all the parts required to properly complete the task, with no patching involved.
Thanks for the suggestion. If I had simply flipped the door frame as you suggest, would be easy to do but in this case the door swing would interfer with another door close by. That's why I did not just flip it
@@neuromanglers That makes perfect sense, "my bad" for not noticing the altered direction of swing. However, that's probably a pertinent detail that should have been pointed out in the video, as there would be little or no point to this solution without that specific problem.
Thanks, It did not occur to me to mention flipping the frame since I ruled it out straight away but you are correct, would have been better to include that decision making process...I hardly ever share that process
Can this be done to an exterior door? My chicken coop for currently swings inside and needs to swing outward.
It could be done. If security is a concern, especially now with bidenflation running wildly out of control, you would need different hinges that prevent the pins from being easily removed
@@neuromanglers Thank you for the reply. This will be a spring project for me. I'll have to start locking the coop for now it seems... the world has gone crazy!
Get this man a multi tool bruh 😂
Thanks....too noisy for this situation
My son's grandpa is scared of his door....here I go!
I'm currently trying to do this with my closet door and I can't get the door to not hit the frame, any advice?
Depends on where on the frame it hits as to what needs to be done
I have made simulated doors from scraps of wood to capture the outline of a door. ....then make or modified what I had to fit the mold
@@neuromanglers the bottom right corner hits and its more than just using a shim or bending the hinge to pull it over. I can't figure out why it fit fine on one side and when I moved it to the outside it doesn't fit the frame anymore.
maybe the frame is pitched in slightly, or the hinge is not fully mortised in on the door or frame. I guess I would plane it to fit if everything else was proper
What about the stop!?
it would be simple to flip but in this case, the door stop worked just as well as is so I let it be
Chris Hastings
My door is metal. Can i still?
anything is possible if you really want it
Can't you just use the same hinge?
Yes, I could have used the old hinges

I would so love to do that if I wasn't renting. My bathroom is so small even if you wanted to keep the door open ( if you were alone ) it's almost impossible to sit on the toilet. The door opens within a 1/4 inch of the toilet bowl!!🤦
I wonder if they’d let you do it if you explained the problem and promised to make sure it all looks neat and tidy when you’re done. Of course, you may have one of those landlords that’s a total stinker - I’ve only known of awesome landlords who like it when their tenants “improve” the rental. Admittedly, you’d want to make absolutely sure all holes and the like were filled and the appropriate colour.
Or you could have just hung it on the opposite side!
yes, it could have just been hung opposite side but in this case it would interfere with another door...
