Another great video. Especially how you get out of the car without disturbing the bird and capturing a better bacground. It was excellent show. Thank you for such great tips.
I enjoyed that. Talking of declines, and I have seen them with my own two eyes, fancy being photo-bombed by a Wall butterfly, or a Wall Brown as they were called when I was younger. They used to be pretty common and widespread when I was young, but they're quite scarce now, and butterfly types get very excited when they see one now.
Another excellent video, Mike. Interesting, entertaining and educational. You are getting me more and more interested in the Olympus. I'm 80 years old now and not getting around as well as I used to. My first digital camera was an Olympus E-20 and I had a lot of success with it in spite of the lack of tech development at that time. The last five years I've used a Nikon D850 and love the image quality but I've all but abandoned that 8.6 pound 500mm F4G lens. I can still use the 80-400 OK so that has been my go to lens this year. The solution is to just get closer which I've found ways to do. Waiting now to see what happens with the detached retina in my camera eye before I make a decision about changing systems. I'm always pleased when I find a new video posted by you. I know it will be a good one.
Amazing how much conservation has been done in the last 30-40 years (and species are declining) so it must be us photographers who are putting off the birds off ! Features like pro capture making photography addictive hey ! Great work Mike ! Hope Sony do pro-capture soon ! 🤔😀
Another excellent video and beautiful images. And I for one appreciate you demonstrating the Pro Capture - this could be one thing that makes me choose the OM-1 over two others which have also caught my eye - I am doing a lot of research on them all! I thought it was just in my area that birds (and other wildlife) have declined, but seems not....
Hi Mike, as always I just love your video's and photography. It's easy to see how you got your FRPS. A quick question, but of course feel free to ignore it if you would rather not say.:-) I use a "shotgun microphone" when video'ing wildlife but I never get the results you do. I wondered if you dub the sound on when editing or if you have some other technique to capture your excellent sound? Best regards Sarah
I rarely record sound at the same time, although last week in Spain I did as I do not have any "stock sounds" from Spain to dub on. In the U.K. I have ambient sounds of the countryside and most common bird songs and dub them on afterwards. It is unusual to have the right conditions to record sound and video at the same time.
Did you try the “bird detect” auto focus? I’ve had pretty good luck with that combined with Pro Capture. Though I use the 50FPS. I don’t think that auto focus is available at 120 FPS.
Good video, thank you. I haven't tried the 120fps SH1, I currently use SH2 at 50fps in normal BIF and ProCapture. In fact, I had forgotten it was 120 until you mentioned it. I was thinking it was still 60.
There is a podcast called "What the Duck." The latest episode is about cuckoos. It's hosted by Dr Ann Jones (you can also find her here on UA-cam), this has two students of cuckoos, both C Taylor. I recommend it to you.
Very great videos and photos. Just wondering which video format do you use with the OM-1? I have been playing around with different format. I don’t usually shoot 10 bit video coz I don’t really know how to color grade those. I shook 8 bit 4K 60 fps. Which frame rate in 4 k video do you find best for quality ?
Not that many options on the OM-1. I set H254 and then 4k. I usually shoot at 60fps so I have the option to slow the footage down a bit. Wildlife looks better and more normal when slightly slower. I am not very knowledgeable on video settings. I have a GH^ which has far more options which I do not understand.
@@MikeLaneFRPS Yes, I’m not really familiar with the video side of things either but looking at your 8 bit videos which are still very sharp and nice. Have you updated your OM-1 to the latest firmware. Here in Macau 🇲🇴 China, we are currently in a lockdown due to Covid so I can’t go out and test it with my OM-1. I find the footages of the slow motion 240 fps too soft for my liking. Very envious of your 150-400 f4.5 pro lens which is unobtainable here for us in Asia. Been on the waiting list forever. I used that money to get myself a Z9 for other type of shooting. The 8K video allows to crop in so much which proves to be useful for time to time. Love you content.
@@ryantang8146 Yes I have done the update. No noticeable improvement in AF. As soon as I go to HD on the OM-1 I am disappointed. The Lumix GH6 seems much better.
@@MikeLaneFRPS I used to use the 120 fps slow motion video on EM1X before and it seemed ok but now the 240 is way too soft. I hope they could at least improve the quality of the 120 fps of the HD since they don’t have 4K 120 fps. I was thinking you might keep the A1 setup just to use the 4K 120 before but seem I’m wrong. You have a lot of faith in the OM-1
Very interesting and another place on my visit list for next year - it is such a big place though, any suggestions for a specific area to consider? I was surprised that you went for f/10 when looking for the extra DoF given the X2 DoF factor with micro43 cameras but if there was nothing too much in the background beyond the two birdsI guess that makes sense and shows your experience at work - I would probably have gone to f/6.3! Again, handy dandy information, thank you.
1000s of images, 99% to be deleted in SH1, you say? Not for me. I’m keeping the frame rate between 10-20 fps, except those situations anticipating take off or for very quick birds when I’ll use SH2.
When you shoot from the car, you should be aware of the warmer air inside the car. This creates turbulences and affects the autofocus. The result can be - many blurry photos. I open the windows on both sides of the car, so the cold air from outside goes through the car.
Once more a interesting video! Kind regards, Rolf
Great video Mike. Cracking Curlew shots.
Excellent video Mike. For me, you are the Jack Hargreaves of bird photography - I always learn something from you. Many thanks.
Thanks Mike learn a lot from you 👍
Great work again 👏

I enjoyed listening to the calls of the birds as well as the images and video thank you.

I appreciate the explanations of your setups. The partridge is very beautiful, I agree.
Thanks, MMike. Interesting as usual.
Thank you Mike! Looks like a nice day to experiment.
Educational and entertaining. Especially the tweaks to the camera position. Great learning experience for noobs like me!

I have never taken a piture without bird or animal detect, but that is all I photograph.
@@MikeLaneFRPS Oh, sorry, I thought you said in the video that you were manually focusing.
@@LarryFasnacht Often I manually focus with video, because the AF is much poorer in video mode.

150 400 om lens
