  • In my "Vintage Artifacts" playlist, we take a look at basses and guitars that are no longer made, but have a neat story to tell. The Fender Power Jazz Bass Special was the bass that inspired the Duff McKagan Signature Bass, and in the 80's, this bass was quite cutting-edge for Fender. More info...

I had an '87 Fender Power Jazz Bass Special in Pearl White and I owned it for 25 years ........wish I had never sold it . I fitted a Leo Quan Badass Bass Bridge which made a lot of difference to sustain and intonation . I was interested to read one of the comments which talked about a yellowish tinge to the Pearl White colour , my bass changed colour over time to a Bird's Custard Yellow which was interesting. The best bass I ever had , really great to play and that TBX tone control could give you any tone that you could wish for . A superb bass , if I could find another , or even buy my original one back I would do it in a heartbeat .......They really are that Good !!

That reverse P pickup really takes this bass into Spector NS2 territory!

I have an original 1984-1987 Jazz Bass Special in Candy Apple Red, I got it for $600 last year and I dont regret it at all, it is an incredible bass, if you can find an original one especially at the price I got mine at, pull the trigger on one

Fender jazz special was released in 1985 (played by Duff Mckagan). The power version came out in 87 with several changes including active pickups.

I’d like to see that, I’ll bet you it was active preamp because you can play this bass without the preamp, hence passive pickups, but show me yours I’ll show you mine an 89 in white no faded to yellow

I've owned a Pearl White Power Jazz Special since the late 80's which i bought second-hand for and always played thru a valve amp or a Marshal Valve State (it kinda does the job) amp and there are not too many styles that you cannot play with this bass having passive and active pick-ups without using pedals. It's (for me) simply the best all-round bass guitar and I find that playing thru a valve amp (1960's Goldentone Bassmaster) gives me the greatest pleasure!

I had the Fender Jazz Bass Special - the actual Duff bass - that I loved. I still kick myself for selling it. It had the tradition PJ arrangement.

Glad I ran up on this. I recently nabbed a PB-551. I am in love with series and am fighting the urge to get an example of each model.

I just bought a passive MIJ Boxer re-issue of the Jazz Special and had to double check when you pointed out the reverse-stack P pickup! The new ones have the conventional stack with the lower string pickup closer to the neck, but that's such a cool detail on the originals! (It doesn't even seem to be consistent on the '80s models. This is blowing my mind!)

I had one of these but I don’t think it was active, but I put EMGs in it…..I regret selling it to this day, it played awesome!

I've played one of these and owned a Fender Prophecy (which inspired the successor to this bass- The Precision Bass Lyte). I find it interesting that this is shaped more like a Precision than the Precision Bass Lyte.

Visual, it reminds me of the Jazz Bass Plus from the 90's (which also included their first 5-string bass with modern BEADG tuning).

I like the P pickup positioned the “other” way. Seems like it would give the D & G strings a bit more low end.

I bought one these, MIJ 1984-87, two months ago and I was really surprised by the different tone that the reverse p's produce. I also had a MIM Duff and it was a nice bass, but not near as nice as the original 80's Japanese basses. If you are interested in Japanese Fenders, check out the Fender CIJ Boxers. They showed up here in Canada about 6 months ago, they are not that expensive and are a great example of the best of Fender Japan.

I have one it’s an 89 that was originally white, maybe? It definitely has a yellow tinge, these are hard to find, I think the carbon fibre laminate on the headstock cost a 100 bones at that time, a friend of mine at FMIC mentioned that to me in passing at a party one evening

You have to find the correct settings tho...the power jazz bass special has many different settings for example you can turn it into a jazz bass or you can turn it into a precision bass (The jazz bass is gonna have both pickups working while the precision bass would have only one set of pickups working ...aside from that there are many other settings that can be manipulated to get the sound you like. I have a 1984 power jazz and it's an amazing bass to own and play.
