I think many people don't understand the consequences of the reveal of Karuizawa's past to others. It's not that her past is wrong or something. Rather its her present behaviour and status in the class. It's not greatly shown in the anime but Karuizawa is seen by her classmates and other first years as a popular egoistic girl. She became popular among girls after becoming Hirata's girlfriend and then became leader of girls of class D. She shows high and mighty attitude among other girls that's why Manabe and some other girls hated her. So if her past is revealed, her friends will sympathize her but the other girls who hate her will start part picking on her and she will lose her position as the girls leader in the class. Worst, she may get bullied again by the students of other classes or by the students of class D who hate her which will eventually drive her away from the school.
@@sugakukataPeople outside of the culture have a hard time trully understanding that pressure, i count myself in that group as well. Foreign student friends i made in college cemented this reality when they would explain that if they rebelled and became the disruptive element themselves against the bullying they would be hammered by "the group". Imagine having the resources to send your child to study abroad but be powerless to stop the bullying at home.
i dont think the "boy" part even refers to his behavior, kouenji just uses the words boy/girl sometimes when talking to people instead of kun/chan/san (and generally, too, he uses english words occasionally)
another fun fact: the "i bought you cold medicine" was a 12/10 scene in the novel, but they butchered it in the anime 😭 cause on the day after the incident he went out to buy *something* (we arent told yet), and after leaving the drug store he caught kei and satou during their strategy meeting, where he saw a healthy kei. then we find out he gives her cold medicine including the receipt with the date of purchase on it, and after kei was annoyed about the nature of his present, she took a closer look at the receipt and we realize alongside her that the date was one day after the incident, telling her and us that he actually intended to give it to her in time, but didnt because he learned that she didnt need it i might have made it sound a little less cool than it was in the novel still, but man was it great to read for the first time
in japanese they have their name backwards.. example karuizawa kei.. karuizawa is the family name.. kei is the real name.. people adress each other with family name if they are unfamiliar with each other/not close enough/ simply put formallly adressing someone.. while calling each other with first name is indicating their closeness and usually done with family/bf/gf/ close friends.. it's that way if it's girl friendship.. but if it's of opposite gender they usually need to be quite close to be calling each other with first name basis..
you said something along the lines of "ryuuen is actually scared of losing and not being the dominant one for once", but that isnt actually true. matter fact, albert (black guy) is stronger than him and originally he beat him in fights a few times, but in reality albert is more a pacifist than a violent guy so when ryuuen just kept going after him roping him into fights, he decided to surrender to him and carry out his will (sounds a bit contradictory, i know). this is ryuuen's actual mindset/philosophy - to sum it up: if you lose the battle, make sure to win the war. he will keep pursuing his goals no matter how often he needs to get up, and violence is simply his go-to method. so it's not that he's scared of losing, it's more so that he is ruling out the possibility of losing from the start by intending to wear the enemy down ruthlessly and as well as he seems to understand human emotions and how they react to threats and violence, kiyotaka is an absolute anomaly that doesnt act the way ryuuen is able to handle whatsoever, or in other words: the fight against kiyotaka made it clear to ryuuen that he is never going to be able to shake kiyotaka's emotions, much less to the point of making him surrender to his might, which is something he never expected out of any human on earth. that is why he was scared for the first time in his life
bullying is the same result everywhere in the world, if people know youre being or have been bullied more bullies will hurt you. kei is the most popular girl in D class so imagine if it comes out shes actually been bullied. the girls that hate her and are jelous of her will come out and bully her now. it was demonstrated by manabe on the ship already look what rika turned into just by finding out kei was a victim of bullying she started beating up kei along with the other jelous girls. so ryens plan of exposing her secret is a serious threat to kei. and ryen forced her to go alone he said hed expose her if she didnt go alone.
Yea I don’t understand your criticism of Kei’s trauma response to bullying. I had a friend in college get drunk one time and tell me about a time he got bullied for months at a time and then a few days later came to me crying begging me to just pretend he never said anything. It actually ruined our friendship from that point on and we never really had another deep talk. Point is the act of bullying isn’t like the “Twitter bullied” version of it. It’s not an act that gets you social validation and it can absolutely make you unable to ever trust again. Kei choses to cope with her trauma by putting on a brave front and that front being destroyed is a serious problem for her mentality.
"Kei choses to cope with her trauma by putting on a brave front and that front being destroyed is a serious problem for her mentality." This is a fascinating perspective, thank you!

If you really want to understand the psyche of the characters, the only answer is to read the light novel, the anime doesn't show the depth too well, in order to properly enjoy the anime you have to let certain things go. Especially the opening visuals make more sense when you understand the characters well. Sad that there are some subtle spoilers in other comments, I hope that not having the context right won't do any harm to future reactions.
to make kiyotaka more terrifying he called what ryuen was doing to kei a little show kiyotaka also told him that he don't care if someone succeeds or fails
I think that ryuen’s motive are like ayanokouji too but not exactly. He also too cares about winning by crushing other classes and that is the reason why he’s bullying for those who gets on his way.
They really made it difficult for anime watchers to see Ayanokouji as anything else than a ruthless sociopath or a "cool edgelord". They even came up with the "I've judged you unworthy of smiling for" line. Which was not in the LN. For reference, here's how that conversation went in the LN: "Thanks for inviting me today. I had fun," I told her. For some reason, Satou still looked anxious. "Hey, Ayanokouji-kun.. you didn't really have fun today, did you?" "No, I did." I was being genuine, but for some reason, Satou didn't believe me "But” "Why would you think that?" I asked. "Well, it's just.. you didn't smile once today, Ayanokouji-kun." "I didn't smile?" Satou kept going. "I would've liked to see you smile at least once, but..." I really didn't have any complaints about how the day went, though. Satou spoke up again. "Does the fact that I once wanted to mess with Horikita-san have something to do with it?" She looked anxious, like she was about to cry. "I really don't mind," I said. "I completely forgot about that." "Really?" "Yeah. Really." "But you still didn't have fun, did you? I mean, you didn't smile." "Well, I'm just genuinely bad at smiling, is all." I had no idea whether Satou believed me. She probably thought I said that to console her. Truthfully, I might still disappoint her. I just didn't feel the way about her that she clearly felt about me, so, in a sense, her concerns about my not having fun weren't entirely off the mark. I had enjoyed hanging out, but I hadn't enjoyed it in the way Satou hoped. "You're not convinced?" I asked. "Well, it's not that I'm not convinced, but..." Satou trailed off. She turned away briefly, got something out of her bag, and held it behind her. "U-um, hey..." She steeled her gaze, as though gathering all her courage for some mighty task. Apparently, she was about to confirm my fears. "Um...p-please go out with me, Ayanokouji-kun!" It was the first romantic confession I'd ever received. Prolonging this would only hurt Satou more. I chose my words immediately, being as honest as I could out of respect for Satou's courage. "I'm sorry, Satou. I can't be that for you." "Oh! I-I see. I guess it's hopeless, huh?" Satou, clearly fighting not to break down, gave me a small smile. "W-well, for future reference, could you maybe tell me why? Is there someone else you like?" "It's not like that. I'm just not ready for a relationship. It's really me, not you." I told her. "No matter who asked me out right now, my answer would be the same.. whether it was you, Satou, or someone else. This might sound kind of lame, but I've never had feelings for anyone yet. I'm not rejecting you, personally. I just haven't really matured enough to handle romance," I said. "I see." There wasn't anything else I could say. "I might've missed out on my chance," I said quietly. I'd turned down a girl who was honest and brave. Some part of me felt like I was making a mistake. It was the part of me that wanted a fun, normal high school career, including finding a girlfriend. But I didn't say anything. "Thank you for everything today, Ayanokouji-kun. She understood that my reply and feelings wouldn't change. Even if Satou liked me in this moment, she might not feel that way tomorrow. Maybe she'd find a new love. However, I'd never forget that Satou was the first to say she loved me. "Is it. okay if I ask you to hang out again?" she asked. "Of course. I had fun with you, Satou. I'd like to hang out, too." I really meant it. "Yeah." Satou nodded. If my issues with the student council and my father didn't exist, maybe I could've answered Satou differently. If she'd told me her feelings before the relay and my father's visit, I might've accepted. Ironic, since the relay was what made her develop feelings for me.
Let's put some of this out there starting with sakuyanagi the chairman. His goal with this school is to make these kids understand that you are about to go out in love in harsh dog eat dog world called corporate so this will get you ready to be a CEO before you leave if you survive. Now as for his daughter she literally sees him as a rival in the intellectual way so she wants to pick at him. Kei has been completely manipulated to be that one pawn who will do what ayanokoji wants without question. Suzune still pretending she's not a tool but she is her brother is just the keep her in check ayanokoji needs to shut her up and obey. And last sato as bad as rejection was in the light novel it wasn't as bad the anime made our boy extra frosty for thinking that.
