Dragon’s Tail Couloir Snow Climb, Rocky Mountain National Park

Dragon’s Tail Couloir is a classic snow climb in RMNP. It rises over 1,700ft above Emerald Lake in 0.7mile, approaching or exceeding 50° slope near the top. On this occasion me and a couple of friends started the climb from the base of the couloir around 5:30am, and reached the top of the couloir around 8am. We took the right fork at the Y-split which is a bit more steep but free of rock/mixed climbing. After topping off next to a huge cornice we made our way down via Flattop Mountain trail. It was an exhilarating experience with breathtaking views all around. Total stats: 5.6 miles and 2400ft elevation gain

I'm just amazed at what people can do in the mountains. So far from anything on my skill level. Just a jaw dropping climb. Looks very tiring too. Congratulations to you and your team.

Thank you. It was definitely tiring at the end but the adrenaline kept us going. The views at the lake with the alpenglow and the sheer rock face near the top made everything worthwhile

That's fantastic! I can't imagine how exhausting that must be. On another note, I'm finally coming to RNMP in late July with my son. The hardest hike we're going to try is to get to Chasm lake. Anyway, thanks for all of the videos, I can't wait to see RMNP in person!

Chasm Lake is one of the best hikes in RMNP, you get a closeup view of Longs Peak and the Diamond Face. Enjoy!
