Your right, TKD is more kicking than punching, and muay thai is balance, some wushu is more punching than kicking. every martial art has its specialities and TKD is kicking + self defence but not much punch but it has more to give than what is shown in the comp style. I've trained tkd for 7 years now and I keep saying only 50%
Punching is all there in the Poomsae, but many people don't train Poomsae seriously because they don't have good role models (you only see dancers in competition), and they don't see the relationship between Poomsae and self-defense, as well as the relationship with Kyukpa (Good Poomsae = Good Kyukpa). You need a good master to teach you that. Ideally someone with a background in Karate, as the Poomsae are derived from Karate Kata.
cheers for the reply mate, good to know some intelegent people still walk on this planet. I think people should practice things and not rely on books and magazines for info ( even videos )
i would say less than 50%, Ironicly ITF Taekwon-do practitioners are better at fullcontact fighting because they use more hands and allows hits to the head (even though its semicontact). It's true that sometimes the instructors seems to forget the selfdefens part and focus too much on grading and competition.
i think thats the reason alot of people think its fake. ALOT of taekwondo schools dont allow sparring with other arts. Plus if you have to prove tkd against sumthn else it wouldnt be a sparring match it would be a fight. And im willing to bet that once the tkd safety barriers are taken away and you cant just win by points, one throw would be the end of most tkd fighters
So that's why I haven't heard about it yet, that's a good news, I think it will introduce a new kind of strategie for the olympic fights, and it will be more realistic I think.
exactly what I was saying, I don't like Olympic TKD too and I think TKD could have a better reputation if the WTF promote more the TKD shown in this video.
that's the kind of Taekwondo WTF shoud promot, not the olimpic sport. I really wish to see the WTF matchs ruls changed to a more full contact fight with punch and kick. For me if we, WTF practitionner, does focust on the competition we use only may be 50% of what TKD offerd us.
these days MMA is just muay thai and bjj, and that's basically what they emphasise for some reason. it's not much of a mixed art, just a mixture of two arts. one rarely sees TKD, karate, aikido, hapkido.etc. i mean bjj is not the only ground art that exists. i have a friend who also started mma. you ask them who art they do, they say mma. basically they mean muay thai and bjj. ever since i moved to the western part of the world i noticed a large emphasis on those 2 arts.
to me, avoid fighting as much as possible. you never know if he has a gun, knife, or has other intentions. just because we're trained in self defense, doesn't mean we can go looking for fights, or fight anyone. if, you're ever unfortunate enough to end up in a fight, end it as quickly as possible, and avoid dragging it out. these are the simple rules that i follow. but if i MUST, i WILL, not because i want to. sadly most people think because they know martial arts, they can beat anyone.
4 years or 5 years in TKD is nothing!! I have been doing it for 30 years and I am still learning!! There is not a bad martial art! just a bad practicioner!! the more you learn the less you know!!
It might look good but think this is just for points system not for life.....I have trained in both styles of TKD and keep going back to the street style self defense !!!
Kym Wheare point system? Knife strikes to the neck is for points? even though it goes against safety regulations in the olympics? Study traditional taekwondo dude. The style the korean monks used to fight off japanese invasions.
Kym Wheare yeah you clearly havent done real tkd. Go to a real one in korea. American ones are ripped off and fake tkd. If you follow poomsae techniques and basic belt motions, you know there are strikes such as kick to the groin, eye gouges, jugular strikes, joint strikes and so on. If you think that isnt good for street fighting then... I have a video link if you want to know how it applies to real fights.
Joe marine Clearly I have done "traditional" TKD.....I have trained under a 7th Dan Master for the past 20 years who also trained the Military !!! Poomsae is part of "sport" tkd...
For all those folks that think taekwondo is mostly about kicking its time to put things straight , Taekwondo has more hand techniques than kicks and many are only practised in forms/patterns/kata. i dont know too much about it as i have only been training for 28 years in Taekwondo
its like that here in australia all we focus on is sparring technique kinda sucks because i want to learn self defeance i mean i can handle my self in a fight but some times i feel like where training for sparring not for the street think of it like this taekwondo person is being mugged and there not sure what to do wheres me iv fought on the streets alot use to get beat up all the time id go for the knees the leg pit and the kidneys or the ribs thats just me but some 1 who hasent been in a
Well. I'm not all against American Taekwondo, but I believe most of the Dojangs are untraditional and are training more sport than self-defense. Some black belts' poomsaes seems very bad though. I've seen a black belt do a worse stand than me, and I'm only 8. Kup.
i can't speak for judo, cos i've never trained in it. the TKD schools that train more in sport are WTF schools, however they do train in proper self defense too, though most do not(sadly). WTF is more sport. but just because WTF is more sport, doesn't mean TKD entirely is the same. TKD becoming an olympic sport has it's advantages and disadvangates. people should learn the difference between what is meant for the street, and what is meant for sport. to me that's the main issue.
basically in the western world most WTF TKD schools emphasise too much on sport and point sparring. the people are taught to kick to get points, not necessarily to hurt attackers. like i said, MOST schools in those parts of the world, not all.
Olympic style is allready full contact but I want to see more punch to the face during a turnament, but the rule dosen't allow it. That's why an olympic champ use only 50% of what TKD can offer. I'm a WTF fighter and the TKD I want to see in my gim is what is shown in this vid so I really whish the WTF to promote that TKD not the olymipc fight.
the problem with bjj is that when you're on the ground, you can only focus on that opponent at that time. these days if you're attacked on the street and you go to the ground, you can't afford to focus on one guy when other guys are coming in.
Only problem with ITF is the sine wave. I don't know what went through the head of General Choi. Probably just politics, to make it look different. But in reality completely useless and a waste of time.
anyone please replies back if i am wrong. Hey Demc, in many martial arts black belt (after brown belt)isn't the final belt in the system, there are many "other" black belt above the first one, it's like this, black belt level 1, black belt level 2 and i think the highest one is 10th dan, right ?
if it was blows to the body then i dont think there should be a limit to how hard you hit, as fighters should be able to take it. Ill say that in my own experience if someone trains with protective gear all the time they havnt been able to accustom themselves to getting hit and it comes as a shock, i dont mean this goes for all just in my experience, which is not huge
in my book, if you do mma, that means you have experience in multiple arts. but like i said, these days, mma is becoming more of an art itself, muay thai with bjj. why do you rarely see other arts in mma? could it be that other arts are not as effective as mma practitioners claim. or is it just over advertising 2 arts?
look taekwondo isn't all fake..Its whatever you want it to be if you train just for sport then thats all its gonna be for you. train for a real life situation then you'll be prepared for a real life situation and if you think taekwondo is fake i'm willing to spar with you.
awesome taekwondo, but stil the man has small eggs, but who cares,he is good as hell!!!! get them into the k1 ring and say taekwondo is inefective XD youll see what you get, sure thing!
I don't remamber that punch to headgear was allowed, I allways see the referee give an penalty for doing so (in France no punch to the head are allowed) I've been doing TKD for 8 year now and I've been to 2 different gim. The first learned us to use everything we learn, kick , punch and throw but only during sparring. The second one, it was only competition with its rules even in sparring, an olympic champ maker, I was disapointed. WTF should promot more this TKD, I still say it 50%
I don't know if muay thai is that balance with hands but yea the do use everything at once. Western Kickboxers to me have better hand combos that thai fighters. I myself have been doing tkd for 3yrs and We are taught 70/30 ratio for feet/hands. I think that once you reach black belt you should try to narrow your ratio to 60/40 or 50/50. So what is your rank??? 2 Dan
just means that person is a third ranking black belt ok so you got first dan firlst black belt 2 dan second black belt then 3 dan thrid black belt from first to second is about 2 years not sure about third tho thats something like 4 years i think
ITF style is more of the defense style. WTf is fine for olympic sissys that don't want to get 'really hit". you know the type that are afraid to get their hair messed up. My teaches both styles so if you want to play fight in the WTF you can and if you want to learn the true tae kwon do (ITF) to survive then it is there also.
ed parker Same. Although I’m a noob, no one ever beat me. I challenged some friends who knew Kung Fu, Karate, Judo, and Boxing mostly, and they had more experience in their style than me, but they didn’t beat me. The worst I did was tying to a Kickboxer. It also helped me a lot in the street and against bullies who were abusing Kung Fu by purposely learning it to beat me up.
A little off topic. Some fighters called themselves " masters " just because they have a 4th dan or higher and won world class medals in sparring. In my opinion, a master is well rounded in the art form. Some of these people focus solely on the sport side but all they know is about 6 kicks and how to move in and out. Is that a master to you?
situation there going to be freaking out like you can train and train ur self for whats going to happen on the streets but if youve never exprinced any of it or ever been bullied alot then that person is well there fucked like i had to be pushed to my limits befor i turned around and defend my self aginst the guys who where beating me up just saying any way
TKD is like a one hit kill. if you miss = you wasted energy ..its deadly cuz its more of a 75% legs ... but if we were to talk about 1v1, one of the martial art that can defeat TKD is Muai Thai... but not days we all mix it up to make it better. thankx to bruce lee.
@satansmask cuz he mix up martial arts... and brought it out from its shadow.. you think if he didn't provoke and go against the chinese traditions, do you think white people will know kungfu or Karate or TKD. he so cocky that it made everyone step up their games.
Don't you guys know anything WTF is not Taekwondo it is only the political org of Tkd. The style is called Kukkiwon they are the ones that promote Dans, issue certificatons for master instructors and have overall say on technique's by the way these guys are kukkiwon style look at the official V neck uniform.
actually i thought ITF is more of a martial art than WTF.....but man.....its just like those lame shotokan tournaments......i didnt like it...the way WTF kicks is more powerful anf artisitc...in ITF they make it look the same as Shotokan with their repetitive hook and turn kicks.
Can't blame you to say that. You're probably from some western country where they "westernize" the martial arts. What they teach in most (not all) western countries are crap! Try going somewhere in the far east and you will see what I am talking about. Even Shotokan Karate in there can compete with both Kyokushinkaikan, Shidokan and Okinawan Karate. My ITF Taekwondo master even has Hapkido and Tang Soo do in his lessons.
Why do I get the feeling that you are lying? I don't think you really practice Taekwondo because you don't even know how to call a Taekwondo practitioner... -ka is used only in students of Japanese martial arts.
+harry david green you don't get it man what I dislike it's the fact that media says that taekwondo is the "free kyorugui" of wtf taekwondo that's is far of the martial art. the second I respect. If you don't understand, i have nothing to do.
IF you haven't had a Master hit you with a stick while training you've missed out on hard training!
Taekwondo is a real martial art. Not a performance art.
this is a really nice taekwondo promotional video. Yes, more of these please. :-)
I love this video it shows some realy good Taekwondoins
2:45 omg amazing speed and technique.

Yes, more of such video pls......
I agree. One critical hit to a weak point could instantly disable any grappler.
cheers for the reply mate, good to know some intelegent people still walk on this planet. I think people should practice things and not rely on books and magazines for info ( even videos )
Superb
Been doing tkd for 13 years. Now I practice capoeira and brazilian jiu-jitsu. Tkd is till my base though.
Ooooh, banana hammock! Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice drooooooooolz
Ah, yes. An actual good Tae Kwon Do Video.

that's the reason ITF Taekwondo is not in the olympics... because in some tournaments they imply full contact rules like in K-1...

Federations are meaningless, what matters is the purity of the Way!

It's funny how people under estimate the art of real tae kwon do. I believe it some one should introduce it with more frequency to the world.
I don't see those fancy hands in a tournament only in pomsae.
Because most of them are ment for self-defense, not sports competition.
in my book, if you do mma, that means you have experience in multiple arts.

why do you rarely see other arts in mma? could it be that other arts are not as effective as mma practitioners claim. or is it just over advertising 2 arts?
Dvd name?
@collideguy.
it totally depends on how good the person is. A good TKD fighter could have no problem to beat down a muay thai fighter
most effective in MMA? perhaps.
power of combat boots
@collideguy why thanks to bruce lee? just curious im not hating and i dont know much about bruce lee just wana know why u say thanks to bruce lee
