I have a 1979 LP Custom Black Beauty that I bought new in 79. I worked all Summer to get the money. $800 with case. It’s played every show I’ve ever played. Still have it. My baby.

    1) Yes, those are T Tops
    2) The Made In USA stamp was being used back then, but they missed some guitars
    3) the Norlin era lasted from 1969-1985
    4) Some of them are 12 lbs!
    5) this is not related to a 68 Custom, this is a run of the mill lates 70s Custom

Finally someone who knows what the hell they're talkin about. I hate when I click on a video expecting info, and all I get is a guy saying he doesn't know this and he doesn't know that...waist of my time. So thanks for the confirming info I needed.

Good catches, mvenuti1980! Also, contrary to what is said at the 5:52 mark, a simple check of Wikipedia will tell you that the Les Paul Custom was not introduced "a few years after the Les Paul," unless your definition of "a few" includes "one." 🙄

I own a first of that 78. They were sold to me as “ Original Humbuckers”. They are not tar backs. Also these were made in the Norlin era(69-8?).They are the perfect 70’s LP because of the solid mahogany ( not pancake) construction.Mine was made 3 days after that one! 72618546.It weighs 10 lbs. and I bought it new when I was 16.

You are right the pickups are T-tops. By now many people have confirmed this for you. My main guitar is a wine-colored 1978 Les Paul Custom. It's my favorite guitar on planet Earth.

based on memory, my '78 wine red custom ,chrome hardware wich my dad bought for me in '78, has "t" tops. I was 17 at the time and took it apart just for fun. .... I now have a Seymore Duncan '59 at the bridge .....My goodness this is a wonderful axe.
    Cheers!

I have a 1977 Les Paul Standard and a Custom, both Tobacco Burst - Kalamazoo made. Both have t-tops and is stamped with made In US on the back.
Was born in 77 myself, so they have sentimental value in addition to being killer guitars 😎👌

If the wood is exposed on the back is buckle “rash”, if it has light impressions it’s known a buckle “worming”. Great video! I had a 77 factory chrome Custom which I loved and am going to pick up a 78 tomorrow! I do know these had T-tops for sure. The sound of the 70s! Subscribed!

Great video, just one thing - The 78 Les Paul Customs (some at least) were for sure being stamped Made in USA. Mine definitely has that under the SN. it was manufactured April 14, 1978 in the Nashville factory.

I stood on stages with my 78' Custom for 15 or so years. I never knew there were less heavy LP's, I just thought this was a common characteristic.

The frets on that are the standard jumbo frets, they've just been worn/dressed down to a lower height. Gibson started putting Made in USA stamps on them in 1970. Some Gibsons had them in the 50s. And that is a Norlin era guitar. Anything built from 1970-1985 were Norlin era. I've got a '73 custom and it's a great guitar. Norlin era guitars catch too much heat for being sub par. I've played a handful of Norlin year guitars and they were all nice. I'd love to have that black custom in my collection, they're just a little pricey nowadays.

1978 was right smack dab in the middle of the Norlin era. Not sure how he could get that so very wrong. 🤨

your question about the pick-ups, you said, you think they are T-tops, well you think correct, the original pick-ups are T-Tops , my 78 custom is a sept. of 1978 , finished in wine red, but sanded down and left in a sanded down state, no staining or any treating of the wood has been done , whoever did this just sanded it and left it as is, 3 piece maple neck, gibson keystone tuners, ebony fret board, flat type frets, with the nibs, of course, it has the widened thick spot on the back of the neck like a re-enforcement , helps prevent breaking, hate headstock breaks, does not have the qwik wind keys with the flip out winding arms to wind the string on, some had ,em but it seems like most dont, im not sure about the qwik wind keys being an original feature, on the back side of my pick-ups it shows sept. 1978 on both neck/bridge , Mahagony body, I hope it isnt weight relief body, just bought this guitar, its still in transit , have only seen photo,s , have yet to see it in person, but there were photo,s of the pick-ups showing that they are indeed the T-TOPS like main man was saying thats what he thinks they are, hes right , they are, pic,s dont lie, I hope shes not in too bad a shape, paid a pretty nice amount for her, came in the #2 chain saw case, with one of the latches broken off, thats all I got, Good Luck, to all of us !! • @addictedtogear
      @addictedtogear  2 роки тому

I don't think there is an official front or back. They commonly get turned around depending on how you need to set the bridge saddles to accommodate tuning.

Serial number = Y, xxx day of year, Y, Number of guitars made that day 7, 253, 8, 506. Made in 1978, 253rd day of the year, 6th guitar made that day. A number over 500 denotes a Nashville made guitar vrs Kalamazoo. I believe the word "SECOND" stamped where it should say "Made in USA" denotes a blemish flaw and usually had nothing to do with the playability of the guitar.
