I'm Greek. Gyros ("yee-rosh") is made with pork belly meat.

Very untrue. Some of us eat lamb once a year, on Easter day and some times we replace it with goat. But most of us don't eat it at all 'cause of the heavy smell.
Alexander Notas I think it depends on where you from in Greece, no? It's lamb in almost every Greek restaurant in Toronto, perhaps mixed with pork or beef. And you all do eat a lot of lamb, so what?!
ladida smith to be honest, we eat lamp, once in two months, but in Gyro we prefer pork or chicken(mine preference). Also, in chicken we put sauce instead of tzatziki. That gyro didn't look Greek(Gyro in Greece doesn't have shape=>it has some variations)
You are right except one thing. It's not pronounced yee-rosh it's pronounced yee-ros. There is no ''sh'' sound (as in ''she'' or ''show'') in Greek.
I've always made it with pork, I'm from Norway. Yet I've heard all this about the lamb, and started to doubt my pork idea which I got from a blog many years ago. Then again I actually ate gyros (is it with an "s"?) in Greek when I was little, I'm actually pretty sure that one had pork, I can't recall the distinct taste of lamb at least.
The funny thing is Meriam Webster Dictionary just made an entry on this after Jimmy's song, and they have the definition as with Lamb. Pretty misinformed if even the dictionary uses that reference. There has to be an explanation why the Lamb idea is so widespread, if it is not actually the original idea of Gyro(s). Sure there are variations with any dish and I guess it depends on where in Greece, but there is still an origin of all dishes. Dezzyx The lamb thing is I think the Turkish kebab. We don't eat that in Greece, we only eat gyros with pork or chicken. Also about the gyros/gyro question. In Greek there are 4 grammatical cases. Jimmy's first album "The Bathroom Wall" came out in 2002 and was nominated for a grammy. he was still on SNL then and his last album "Blow Your Pants Off" came out in 2012 when he had his Late Night show and he won a grammy. He should come out with another one. =)

It's pronounced Y-ee-ro another example.. "Gyroscope" it should be pronounced in English Y-ee-roscope in Greek GyroskOpio and the correct pronouciation in Greek is Y-ee-roscOp-ee-o. where is Capital letter you give EMPHASIS to the proununciation of the word to be correct.
