I love that this song just sounds like a conversation.
"Are you telling the story or am I?" "Hey sis, I want not a sound out of you." "Isabella, your boyfriend's here." "Time for dinner."
Just random lines that has nothing to do with the overall theme of the song and the overlapping layering of voices really adds to the conversational family vibe.

This music is even better when watched with video, because the way each character acts during the song only makes the song sound even better. For example, during Dolores' first part, she is dancing and we can actually hear the steps. And Camilo, during his part, is always shifting between his form and Bruno's always portraiting him as some boogeyman.

I like how the songs in Encanto really tells you the personality of the characters and their relationships with each other. Like the contrast between Pepa and Felix. Pepa is nervous and in her own head a lot of the time, (as seen in a couple of scenes in the movie) as well as mad at Bruno still for ruining her wedding day: “Bruno says it looks like rain…In doing so he floods my brain…married in a hurricane”, in contrast to the relaxed and easygoing Felix who couldn’t care less about the storm saying “What a joyous day, but anyways” kinda under his breath in comparison to the volume of the song. Showing that he was just happy he was still able to marry the woman he loves. “I’m sorry, Mi vida”, Mi Vida meaning my world (I think), but doesn’t talk about Bruno for her sake.

Honsetly, This 'overlapping people singing different songs and they all fit together' is one of Mirandas greatest strangth. That is why "Non-Stop" remains one of my favourite numbers in "Hamilton" it _is_ a staple of musical (the overlapping group number) but he does it so, so, _so_ masterfully, it is not even funny

I love how Abuella's children represent past; present and future: Julieta's food heals past wounds; Pepa's mood controls present weather; and Bruno's previsions see into the future!
Also, some people commenting on this post and I have come up with some exciting new ideas!
The thing is Abuela's grandchildren may represent the 5 senses: Luiza's strength is for touch; Isabela's flowers are for smell; Dolores's audition is for hearing; Camilo's shapeshifting is for sight; and Antonio, being the only one to use his speech and tongue to use his gift, is for taste!
As for Abuela and Mirabel, they both fulfill the same role of matriarch, which is to guide the family to stay strong and united.
However, Abuela represents the mind, for she oversees and controls everything in the family, while Mirabel represents the heart, for she is able to understand and fix the problem each one is facing.
So all the powers play out as if the Madrigal family was a single body whose mind and heart coordinate all its parts in perfect harmony: past; present; and future; touch; smell; hearing; sight; and taste!

Like, she hears him in the walls this whole time. Same as at the end of the song when she sings “I can hear him now” can mean she can hear Isabella’s boyfriend but if you combined it with Mirabel’s next line, “Bruno! About that Bruno!” She’s actually talking about Bruno, without talking about Bruno lol 😂

I have to say, my favourite verse by far has to be Camilo's talking about Bruno like some seven-foot bogeyman because Camilo is barely older than Mirabel. He was still a child when Bruno left, so he likely only remembers Bruno's supposedly towering height and horror stories that Abuela and his older cousin and sisters told him.

    • @villamiles
      @villamiles 2 роки тому +400

Yes, it's a mix of Colombian music but remember that the main genre of this song is chachachá and the Chachachá was born in Cuba, a lot of ritms, and musical genres were brought to Colombia and we make them our own, like Cali and it's salsa. That's why Hooman thought Lin Manuel wanted to represent the Caribbean countries but as you said, he's representing a tiny part of Colombia.

3:58 Something great about Lin-Manuel Miranda's work is that you can constantly hear the patterns of different songs reappearing in later songs only to with new meanings through the sung phrases (something he's no stranger to doing with his work in In The Heights and Hamilton). This song in particular is not even the first time he's done the same thing while still in the same song (I am talking, of course, about the song "96,000" from In The Heights...which you should also react to if you haven't heard it yet).
Like...he's not the first to do this but he took it and perfected it.

It’s like… Lynn made a multi part harmony, then added lyrics to the most important parts, then exposed the fragmented pieces to us first, before mixing all the parts together, in and out, to show the complete song to us.
I’ve only seen this once before. In a video game no less.
