I'm glad I found this video and your channel. I'm expect to start creating graphic novels by summer, and am creating a library of Blender tutorials on my downloads. Here's a thumbs up for this video, and a subscription. Best wishes.
Looks like Blender is revolutionizing the comic industry, wish I knew this back when I wasted a lot of time drawing my backgrounds out when I could have just modeled them XD
@@PCaggegi Oh yea, this is like something else compared to what I used to use. Who needs expensive drawing program subscriptions for their comics when they can use this and look amazing!
This is aweseome! How did you manage to get such crisp looking shadows without any noise? In the first render without the compositioning, there is some noise in the darker areas, but once the shadow is split off, it's all separated clearly into black and white areas. When I try to do the same I always get gradient shadows and that doesn't look cartoony
It only got easier to make crisp shadows in later versions. In this one, I believe all I did was use a sun lamp, and nothing else. But take a look at last month's video on shading for comics. Some handy tips on setting up crisp vs soft shadows early on.
Thanks for the tutorials. Very informative. What is the difference between Grease Pencil and Freestyle, and what should Freestyle be used for? Is there a way to export your comic to SVG vector format?
AFAIK you'll have to convert them to a mesh/curve and maybe run their material through a shader node like diffuse? It would break the process you'd need to do this sort or thing for the end. I personally like to "draw" my shadows as a separate grease pencil object.
I have a question Paul.. I've noticed you do alot of 2D art in blender so I figured you were the best person to ask. I'm sure It's possible but I don't know myself how to - How do you Import 2D Animation into Blender and.. is this possible? If so can you show me via a stream or some other means if you have the time please, would be ever so kind of you thanks
Hi there. What kind of 2D animation do you want to import? Are you talking about a pre-rendered animation? An animation sequence from another program? A BVH? Animation isn't *really* my area of expertise, and this channel is more about using 3D for illustration, however it really depends on what you mean by "animation". I'm sorry I am not set up to stream one-on-one as my time is taken up home-schooling and working remotely right now. :(
Could be any number of things. Check you have "transparency" ticked in your film render settings; make sure you're actually rendering an alpha channel. Anywhere a node allows you to check "use alpha of second operation" (that small button top right of most nodes) make sure it's enabled. Those would be my suggestions.
I love this whole thing but for my ignorance. What's it for? How does this help animation? Why not use AN or any of the other apps for animation? No disrespect, your work is top of the line, I just don't get it.
There's a title along with this video that might help you understand what this is for. Something about COMICS I think... no mention of animation. That's probably where you went wrong. 😉
Thanks Paul for a speedy reply. I get it now that you've pointed out the obvious. :-\ So, if I were doing a comic strip, this or part of it might be used often, along w different other panels. Really nicely done.

I used a reference pic of my home town for the skyline. Thanks for the ideas Paul.
Nice! And you're welcome!

Gosh I wish! Lol! I hope these techniques and tools make it easier for your own comics

I began this in order to avoid drawing perspective. And now... 🤣
@@PCaggegi Great stuff, i love it!
Excellent Work
this chanel is a hidden gem.
You got a very great own style, its wonderful to see that and learn so much new stuff. Good going keep on.
Thanks very much!
Very useful! Thank you so much Paul.
7:22 Thought: you could stick a colour ramp in there to further control the coordinate mapping. Yes, colours for (X, Y, Z) values!
Great work!
Nice tutorial, hey they look like megaman neighbours ? thank you so much.
Hahaha! Yeah I love that Megaman helmet
I love megaman. Waiting for your next inspirational tutorial.

Haven't watched yet, but this looks great.

Its cool

I have one question if I need to animate the 2d animation for an product and how to convert to video
Nice. Curious... how would you have your characters, made in grease pencil, cast a shadow on the 3d model, or can they? Thanks

You can add shadows in the object visual effects panel. Play with the settings after you add the shadow effect. It works great.

Hey so I tried the Tutorial up to 40:02 but at that time the background ain't showing it stays black
And my one object goes orange...

6:18 There you go, there is another workspace preset you are not using.
4:52 You should really learn to use workspaces. They can speed things up by avoiding all this faffing around rearranging windows.
Do you critique all tutorials to this extent? You could start a youtube channel. ;)
