  • Hello everyone, my name is Duong.
    I am 32 years old.
I live in a poor mountainous area of Vietnam.
From a young age, I had to work hard to help my parents.
Difficult life is always around, I work and learn everything from my grandparents and the old people in the village.
    Gradually, I mastered the skills.
5 years ago, I decided to live the challenge.
Determined to learn about the primitive way of life, I chose to live in the wilderness, alone.
Where there's no technology and forcing yourself to pass, it feels great!
How about you? Your life is definitely different from mine.
    Have fun watching the video!

@Primitive Skills: A couple of Observations"
    1) Forge yourself a small hook knife. It will help you greatly when harvesting, or for light trimming of plants.
    2) Weave yourself a scoop/skimmer and attach it securely to a long pole. Kind of like a giant spoon with an extra-long handle.
It will help you greatly to keep your pond clean of leaves and other debris. Weave the head/bowl part similar to that flat basket that you use for cleaning or carrying fresh cement.
The open spaces should be much larger/more open to allow the water to escape. But not so large as to let the leaves and debris to pass through.
It will also help rescue stupid chickens that fall in the pond.

Duong, you should attach a longer handle to the broom for sweeping, it would be better for your back. I wish you good health my friend!

Besides the rats, I believe the soil may not have sufficient drainage due to the heavy rainfall and lack of aeration. Mixed presence of cassava plants in your field may also deprive your corn of essential exposure to sunlight. If these issues can be addressed, you should see an improvement in your corn yield.
Your animal care is wonderful and it's great to see them all so friendly and healthy. Great work!
Seeing you working at the forge again is my favorite part. The creation of new tools from iron is wondrous. Perhaps you can make a pedal system for your bellows someday? This could take a lot of stress off your arm and back, if it can be operated with just the bouncing motion of one foot. I'm eager to see what you'll create with your new chisels!

Another suggestion: if you attach a bamboo basket to a stick it would be much easier to clean the pond. You could just scoop up the dead leaves and the water would drain away instead of having to use your hands to collect them one at a time.

A bit of advice for tempering the chisel tips: when you take them out of the fire wait until the tips turn bright yellow before quenching them that will make them last longer and make them less prone to shattering.

Hi Duong! Glad to see you back on the farm! Hoping you had a nice visit with your children! : ) How far away is home from the farm?
Your corn… If you could grow your corn in a garden area that is flatter and can be easily tended and managed, it might help prevent the rats from invading and eating a lot of it. When weeds, grass and vines are allowed to grow, I would think that it would create wonderful places for rats to inhabit, climb around, explore and nest, especially with they have a wonderful food source right in the middle of it. Is there a native plant that you could plant in and around the perimeter of future corn gardens that rats do not like? A plant that has a scent that naturally will push them away would help a lot? You might also find ways to trap the rats. There are other videos on UA-cam with really cool rat traps!
Cleaning leaves, etc. from your pond…
People that clean swimming pools for a living have these long poles with a net on the end that they use to skim the water surface to collect plant debris, etc. I bet you could make something similar with bamboo to help you clean your pond.
Chisels… Tools like this are great property and will be wonderful, multi-purpose tools on your farm. I do hope that you have a worthwhile rock carving project, like creating a sink, water basin, or grain grinding wheel mill for your kitchen, etc. Rock carving, sculpting is another labor intensive task that takes hours of valuable time to complete a project. That said, this would be a good way to use winter time when you aren’t busy growing crops.
You water wheel has been down for sometime and in need of major repairs. Do you plan on rebuilding it? You did demonstrate uses with it and had not yet explored all of its potential.

One thing you might want to make to make it easier to clean the fishpond is a net on a pole, like those used by fishermen to catch fish, or by pool workers cleaning up pools. It will make it easier for you to clean up the pool without straining yourself too much.
Also, I am not a farmer so I cannot be taken for my word but I feel like the area the corn is grown in has too many other tall plants. Those plants might be draining nutrients, taking up sunlight, or making it easier for vermin to reach the corn to consume. Again, not a farmer, but I feel like you should remove the tall plants around the cornfield or plant them closer to your farm for easier maintenance.
Glad to see you are doing fine. And looking forward to new videos.

"Clearing competing plants": As a Landscape Contractor, Farmer, Gardener, your gut instinct is correct. Especially "Sunlight". Corn loves sunlight. In among the cassava, the corn is being out competed.
This also invites a whole host of other problems: Pollinators not being able to get into the corn flowers The reason for few kernels (seeds) on the Corncobs . Poor air circulation (invites molds and mildews). Cover/shelter to animals that eat the corn. He just opened a "Free Restaurant" outside their front door.
      Etc.

The chisels looks kinda dull, you should try carburizing them (increasing the carbon content) to improve hardness by placing them for 15min in a clay envelope containing charcoal (same assembly as a Wellington beef, but with Steel, charcoal, and clay instead of meat, duxelle, puff pastry) or by doing a more drastic quenching by rapidly agitating the steel in water instead of just puting and wait as you did

There is a very simple, yet effective mouse trap for dealing with mice and rats that can be made with primitive materials as well. Make a large clay pot, and near the rim at the top, make 2 small holes that you can feed string through. Then take a length of bamboo that reaches all the way across the inside of the pot, but still fits inside the top with a little space. Feed the string up through the bottom of the bamboo until it comes out of the top. Tie both ends to the holes of the pot. When you place a small piece of bait on the bamboo, mice and rats will climb the pot, and jump on the bamboo, but the string will make the bamboo roll when they get close to the middle, and they will fall into the pot.

I know that you taked about the water wheel before, that you didn't think that the water flow would be enough to generate power, but it most definitely can work provide you with another source of power.
More electricity would make things so much easier.
You could even string lights along the trees to the roof of the buildings at the farm so you could work and have light when it gets dark.
There are so many videos about using the water wheel for electricity.
And if you don't think that the water pressure would be enough you could just make the water tank bigger because seeing all of that water just not being used is such a waste.
Thank you for the amazing video and good luck

Nicely made, good to see it did not provoke a back issue; do make sure you take it easy for maybe a day or two after doing that sort of work, then your back problem should not flare up too easily, unless you are very unlucky. Being a fellow sufferer is the only expertise I have to offer, but it's good to be able to share that bit, as it might save you some misery at least. I've made most of the big mistakes, so you don't have to, it is the only upside I have gained from having the problem and being much older. I never expected that. I would suggest getting cats and dogs for all the wild life eating your crops. I know that sounds difficult up on the hills but all they need is a home base to get out of the elements, a friendly face that’s feeding them every once in a while (because they’ll be predatory pets that eat the rats and birds and snake you don’t want in your crops), and a couple friend or brothers and sisters. Here in America it works really well and becomes a crucial part of saving not just your crops but your livestock as well
