Finaly I bought one and I’m not disappointed. It’s a professionnal quality instrument ! I’ve bought many different kalimbas from china. Now, this one is my favourite ! The sound is unique and powerful. Mine is the celeste chromatic treble. But of course it is really expensive. For a beginner I advise to buy a gecko, first.

Sir. What's different tracey and Alto, which one of them is bigger size?
was looking for one to buy my bf for his birthday, it’s in 2 weeks and this one is a bit pricey so i will just get him a regular c-major one, and save up and buy this one for his christmas present! ☺️
Would you recommend buying the alto or treble made by Hugh Tracey, does the 2 key affect how many different songs you can play? Been trying to figure out which one to buy, your advice would be greatly appreciated
Also did it come with a tuning hammer? Or is this something that is bought separately?
I have an original 1966 hugh tracey , Im having trouble finding music to play on it , any suggestions ?
Would you suggest a kalimba with or without the sides having the carve for your hands? I want to know if it makes it more comfortable to hold or has a better grip to the kalimba, unless it has other pros to it ^^
It's up to your personal preference really. Side grips for me don't make a huge difference, but I know for other they can be comfortable. You could see if your local music store has any Kalimbas and try some with/without the grips and see what you like. Hope you can find this useful!
Are the alto keys bigger than the treble ones or are they the same size? 🙏🏼🙏🏼
I have both treble celeste and alto celeste and the alto keys are definitely bigger
Only thing I’m worried about are dead sounding tines on the higher end, I’ve bought two (not from Kalimba magic) in the past and the high notes sound so bad no matter what I did that I had to remove them.
Ever have this problem with the Hugh Tracey Kalimbas?

Hugh Tracey Kalimbas (such as this Aalto Kalimba) have been made since 1954, and they have a completely different tine metal composition than the Chinese kalimbas. While the high notes don’t resonate as much as the lower ones (because their pitch is higher than the resonant frequency range is the Box)… the Hugh Tracey high notes tend to be way better than the Chinese-made kalimbas.
Just a matter of tuning precisely. Same with the buzzing mentioned in the video.
Is this kalimba tunable?
Do you recommend buying a kalimba made out of acrylic?
Hey there. Acrylic Kalimbas are often a lot heavier than regular wood. As a comparison, most wooden Kalimbas are 300 grams, while some acrylic ones are 600 grams. Also, acrylic Kalimbas have a quiter sound with less sustain than a wooden Kalimba. For me, Acrylic Kalimbas look nice but I like them really only as a novelty item. However, there could be an Acrylic Kalimba that performs well that I haven't heard of yet. Hope this answers your question!

The only issue is that there isnt anything else on the market to compare, like its either the hugh tracey or like mass industry companies from china. Theres a decent sized middle ground of like decent quality ones from china? But if its a western kalimba there arent really any other choices. I want an alto kalimba so bad but i dont think i should have to commit to $150 for it as a beginner. Except there are no other altos on the market. Not even in the same price point. Literally only hugh tracey and one custom kalimba option from someone on etsy... actually at a very reasonable price but i didnt favor the design. So maybe 2 options but I genuinely couldn't find anything else. There are different sizes, designs, colors, and bodies, but not many different pitches. Most dont reference the pitch, and even more are all in the tone of c as a default. Higher pitched, fairy or angelic like tones. I want something lower ! I hope this changes. But anyway, i got a used treble hugh tracey for really cheap and im gonna try to tune it down? Hopefully it works
