      I have 7 kalimbas so far. My 21key just arrived yesterday! A Hluru Bottom hole maplewood one. 😍 I think when you've been playing kalimba for a while, there comes a time that you want to step up your game. Playing songs on a 21 key is a bit challenging since you are adjusting to new tine positioning. In a way, you will also become more versatile in playing. Good thing is, you can still play all your 17 key songs on it. And though, finding 21key ktabs is not easy, it could be a calling to make your own covers if you're having a hard time finding tabs. Lol. 😊😉

      @@missus_o_22 as a subject for future videos, (if you haven’t done this already) you can buy a bunch of Kalimba times and a bridge which come as a set and then you can attach it with screws to any box or object that provides good acoustics. I tried it on aluminum cans and on large sheets of wood. Works great.

    I think, the most important thing to buy a 21 keys kalimba is to have all important chords/ base notes in a lower tone. If you play a 17 keys kalimba for a long time, you know, what I mean. It does not sound well. The melody line always has to be higher than the chord notes. The basic chords for C-Major tuning are C,F,G, Am. I think, this is the main reason for the 21 keys Kalimba.

      It is possible yes 😊
      B is half step higher to C, so you need to adjust all 21 keys to half step note higher. You could do it by having a tuner and hammering up each tine upward. 😊

    Would there be any issues with changing the tine arrangement to a more traditional piano style keyboard for the typical kalimba?

    • @erickjmedina
      @erickjmedina  3 роки тому

      Hi! There would be.
      First, the size of the wood is small; it will affect the sound quality and tone of the kalimba. I think that’s possible if the wood is bigger than the usual kalimba.

  • @yipsue3168

    Thanks for your advice. I am considering if I should buy a Lingting 21 or 17 key Kalimba. I already own a 34-key of other brand but am just not so fond of its sound. Lingting makes really clear and good sound.
    At the first place, I wanted to buy a 21-key feeling (just feeling :D) that more keys could have wider coverage ....
    But as you have said, any song that can be played on the 21-key can be played on the 17-Key. So.... what is the use of the additional lower four keys of 21-key?
    For example, when I play a song on the Lingting 21-Key, the Key is pre-set as F, if I set "F3" as "1", it would be too low. But if I set the "F4" as "1", then it seems quite high for many songs.... is it?
    Thanks and blessing :)

    • @erickjmedina
      @erickjmedina  3 роки тому +3

      Hi! Interesting yes.
      But even though the starting key is F (middle), the key center of that kalimba is still C.
      In other words, C key is just extended to four more lowet notes. It’s not F key center, it is C key center. The use of 4 more lower notes is just to reach lower notes of C.
      For an instance, if you own a ukulele, you have 4 strings, and they are capable of doing the chords, if you have guitar you have 2 more strings, also capable of reaching lower notes, but ukulele and guitar can both perform chords of the same name 😊

    • @yipsue3168
      @yipsue3168 3 роки тому

      @@erickjmedina Thank you for replying. It is hard to choose then.
      I totally agree with your advice that just like guitar and ukulele, 17 keys and 21 keys both can perform same songs.

      Thanks again and blessings~~

    • @erickjmedina

      Have you heard about the key center? If the middle of 21 keys is 1, that means that’s the key center. If the middle is 4, that’s not the key center because 1 is always the key center. I can answer it more in a 1 min video for you

    • @erickjmedina
      @erickjmedina  Місяць тому

      Hi! Imagine this, your 17-key kalimba has 4 additional lower tines. All you need to do is to disregard those tines and follow the tutorial you're watching. I may do a video for you, but I'll see my sched first. Hope yoi figure it out soon! ☺️

    Are the tines on the Lingting as narrow as my on my 17 Lingting Whisperer. They are so narrow it's ridiculous. My Gecko 17 is far easier to play as the tines are much wider.
    Also it seems difficult to find a 17 Kalimba in F3 or G3. Probably a resonance limitation. I have those keys on my HT Altos but they have only 15 tines and sometimes I need the missing higher two notes (like when trying to play "How deep is your Love" ). Chromatics have it but this could also be another reason to get a 21, right?

    • @erickjmedina
      @erickjmedina  2 місяці тому +1

      Hi! I agree with you, Lingting's tines are narrower as compared to Gecko.
      And yes, there are notes that you cannot play if you don't use chromatic ones. 21-key however is still a major scale, an extended version of 17.

    • @Nclght
      @Nclght 2 місяці тому

      @@erickjmedina Thank you for your response! Yes, I understand the 21 is just and extension of the major scale. But I think that's what I need if I like playing in G3 or F3 as typically those are only found on 15 tined alto diatonics. So in essence, the 21 with F3 as the bass would be like an extended diatonic Alto, right? And i mean G3 or F3 base note in C major scale.
