This video taught me that, as a beginner, I shouldn’t get frustrated by failing. Yesterday, I had my fourth BJJ class and I got tapped and choked out a lot. My training partners were respectful and gave me lots of tips, but I still felt quite demotivated. It’s really a humbling and ego-killing process. But similar to what you said in this video, my instructor also mentioned that it’s normal to suck in the beginning. The more I come, the more I fail, and the more I learn, the better I’ll eventually get.
Really great advice in this video. Thank you. I train at a Gracie Gym and as a white belt with 4 months I do not spar. I'm happy about this. I mean, I could do tournaments or train other places/players but I don't want to yet. I'm barely remembering the techniques. And at 71, I don't want strength applied on me yet. I am strength training and my cardio/endurance is very good but my jiu-jitsu game is lame.😂 I'm working on the basics and muscle memory. I need my partner to help me get in position per the indicator. And regain safer positions after a bad position and I'll do the same for them. Strength IS important and can be applied AFTER I get some muscle memory and really am able to flow technique to technique. I'm just competing with myself. I'm trying to be MY BEST SELF. I hope I never actually have to use jiu-jitsu on anyone but I'm learning, I'm having fun, and avoiding needless injuries. CHEERS!
71 and BJJ beginner must be very challenging. im not even 50 and some times my joints says enough, especially knees and elbows. How do you endure joint pain? do you have some nutrition or supplementation?
Been doing BJJ for a few months now, and recently felt a massive dip in confidence and have felt like I’m letting my frustration getting to me. Your video is a definite eye opener to being a BJJ white belt
Thanks for the content. I’m 22 years in the Matt. Mistake I made as a GB instructor . 20% drills 80 % hardcore rolls. My body is wrecked . Yoga has helped . Physio is good. Warn kids now. Watch Rickson in his last interview . He is paying for his youth . We need to talking to BJJ black belts 50 plus who can fend off a 25 year old fast purple belt long enough to take his will away
46 year old white belt, love rolling with higher belts and trying not to get tapped which is a challenge in itself. Love the journey, hopefully blue belt in a year or so. Love the video
48 year old WB myself 3 months in. Same. Rolling with higher belts is great because even though I’m constantly on the defense I’m seeing what they’re doing and taking things in.
It took me almost a full year to stop spazzing or as I would say learning how to pace myself. People would tell me 2 relax but i just didn’t understand. One day it all happened, I was fluent in my movements and I exerted minimal energy. I now realize my spazzing was a result of not having any real defense or submissions.
This rules . As a white belt I’ve always kind of eye rolled at guys who get frustrated and angry at getting tapped , I just stay calm and thank my partners or say “ ya got me , good job . How’d you do it ?”
Awesome video man thanks. I’m 44yrs old and just started bjj roughly 4 months ago. I’m actually going through most of the stuff you mentioned. However, lately I stared to notice that I can make things harder for people. They need to work more for that armbar or choke, and I ain’t gonna lie it feels awesome. I also, noticed that my cardio (that I think is grossly underrated) improved dramatically. Tbh this is where I see the biggest improvement at the moment. When I started I was really struggling to complete the class and maybe one roll. Now I’m able to complete 3-4 rolls after the classes. BJJ definitely feels like a rough ride yet I am leaving from every training with a huge smile on my face. It is a great sport with even greater community. Thanks for the video and OSSS!
Those are relatable, level-headed points. Great job making this combat sport easier to navigate for beginners dude. I think white belts constitute the largest rank in Jiujistu, and videos like this are going to help them stick it out and make those upper belt numbers grow.
Thanks man! Means a lot coming from you! I was reminiscing about some of the struggles I had as a white belt and felt motivated to put out more guiding content for those who may be in the same shoes during their white belt years. If I can help more people stick with jiu jitsu for the long run, that’s a major win right there.
Back on the mats after 2 years out. Only a 1 stripe white belt so I was never good, but I carried a lot of the fundamentals with me. Training 5-6 time a week. But going 50-70% most of the time. Loving my new approach and mindset. Winning? lol idc about that. Learning. Yes! Besides in my class everyone is purple and above and there’s 5-10 of us. I’m not gonna be tapping anyone for a long long time, and I’m cool with it. Best learning environment I’ve been a part of.
Thank you for that video! I've been training for a time and I'm happy cause I'm learning, only to survive! That's my mission now as a white belt and I'm just trying to get better, don't stress me and don't push until I have no breath, as you say, it will no help to change the result! So I try to breath, think on what I'm doing, how to escape...and someday, it will be easier! Thanks again for your tips, very helpful! Big hug from Spain
I appreciate it, my man! This is a passion of mine, and even though I’m still figuring it out as I go, if I can share what I’ve learned along the way, it’s a win 🤙🏼
Hi Will, I'm starting BJJ at 42, almost 43 years old, and i think that your tips are what i really needed to hear. Thank you for your generosity! Suscribed!
Great advices man. I saw me in a lot of things you said. I use so much strength that my body hurts when I lay down at home. I do gym training since a lot of time. But a BJJ work put my body to death. I'm still trying to keep my training technical. It's hard when it's natural for you do strength training for a long time.
Thanks brother. Yea, I hear ya. It’ll growing easier time. Just as much as it is to learn and successfully apply submissions, it’s just as fun to realize your efficiency is improving. Keep up the good work.
This was awesome advise! I made several of the same mistakes you pointed out, especially the one about going hard all the time and now I’m injured and can’t train for a while as a result 😢. Really wish I wouldve paced myself a bit early on. Great lessons here that I will take back to the mat once I heal up. Thank you brother…Osu!
My biggest downside to being new to BJJ is having practice outside of the classes. I don’t have people that can do it at all as of right now, and truthfully I don’t know what to do but hopefully it will change.
Dude, this is legit gospel. I'm only a few months into my journey with BJJ. I am wholly guilty of not focusing on technique, just trying to survive. I've recently started leaning more on cutting back my subs in a training round, not looking for subs. Going to build my defense, roll on from there. 🤙🤙
@willbrooksofficial just hoping for class to class improvements, not trying to a 90 day blue belt. I feel that's kind of disrespectful to myself and my gym.
Yes sir, Great video ! Going 9 months of my WB Journey, it is sometimes frustrating but I started seeing the opportunity and opening while rolling but still off in timing. I know it will come thru time, so I keep coming and learning. OSS Thank you

@@willbrooksofficial thanks. I'll be heading in tomorrow night and then friday and Saturday if work/family works out. I'm addicted and overwhelmed in equal measure
5:00 mark: yep I'm on month two and frankly can't seem do anything. Not seeing the fun/playful aspect when getting choked out or armbar-ed. I've been told it'll eventually click but I can't counter a choke or arm bar once it's cinched in (because I can't recognize the initial steps leading to it). Of course at 52 and less than stellar physical condition (mainly flexibility issues) doesn't help. Options: keep going (and endure the niggling injuries) or quit. Might as well tough it out until either I learn something in the next few months then make another assessment.
In my opinion, I think you should keep going. Otherwise all those annoying moments you have experienced are for nothing. Especially with so much success ahead you, it’s totally worth the struggle. Give yourself room for grace and be patient with yourself. You’ll get there 👍🏼
Ive only done 4 classes so far and its a lot harder than it looks 😅. Coming from never having excersized for a good 3+ years controlling my breath is so hard. I've had multiple people im practicing with stop to let me catch my breath and give me some guidance as to how to control my breathing which I really appreciate
That’s my new goal then. I making it a point to strictly train survival and escapes. I’be been training for 1 year at this point and im still no good at guard passing and can only perform 2 submissions. But I notice people have difficulty staying on me when they have mount, and if they do take my back I can’t get out of the body triangle but my hand fighting isn’t terrible. So that settles it. Survival above everything for now.
I like the attitude of viewing struggle and even defeat as an opportunity. Do have advice on what we should be looking for when looking for a school? How to spot a quality school and instructor?
Yessir. Always looking for those opportunities. Yea, I would just try a few out and see which ones feel like a “fit” to you. Most offer a trial week for free. I’d just watch out for instructors that aren’t arrogant, easy to talk to and willing to help take the extra step to help you learn, with a friendly demeanor. I could honestly do a entire video on the red flags of bad bjj schools, but for the most part they’re all really good. Just feel out a few and I’m sure you’ll find your home.
