Hello there,I am 74,and so remember ABBA and their their music from the very start of their career.Your description "Only ABBA can make you dance with tears in your eyes" is the best and most moving I have heard, and bought tears to my eyes too!Thank You.
This song is a true masterpiece. Bjorn wrote the lyrics shortly after their divorce. So much pain in those words. Benny at the piano did the tunes. Agnetha delivered one of the best pop performances ever and all in one take. Just stunning. Simply stunning.
So they broke up because of Agnetha, or that was Bjorn decision? If he wrote those lyrics based on private life, that means she left him, not otherwise.
@carsonix78 Well, not exactly the song is "about A" separation, not specifically theirs. Björn said that he came up with the idea for the song because of their divorce, so the feeling are absolutely true and real. But the song is still fiction and not based on their own divorce.
Agnetha has said that this is her favorite Abba song. She told that this song represent feelings of both her husband ( who wrote the lyrics and playing guitar beside her) and her.
ABBA are the all time masters of break-up songs. The band consisted of two married couples. The guy at the piano (Benny) married the brunette (Anni-Frid) and the guitarist (Björn) was married to the blonde (Agnetha). The boys wrote the songs and the girls performed them and for decades ABBA ruled the charts as one of the most successful pop-bands ever. Neither of their marriages survived though. Going through a heartbreaking divorce Björn wrote "The winner takes it all" and Agnetha performed it standing next to him on stage. If anything, ABBA were professionals to the core. Try and listen to "Knowing me, knowing you"...
Seems like most of their live performances were lip synched like this one. It was common back then. Bjorn and Benny were great song writers and producers though.
Hi, I'm a musician and play guitar in Classic rock, heavy rock and metal bands, however..........ABBA are my guilty pleasure and this song always brings a tear to my eye an absolute masterpiece from the kings and queens of pop.
Yes. They did this without auto tune or featured rapper. No T+A. Just pure raw talent. 400 million or more records sold... Chiquitita or Fernando or One of us next please 👌🔥❤️
In those days there was no autotune. Either you sang so that you touched people - in or out of tune (Monica Zetterlund sometimes was a bit off, but never ever bad) - or you were out of the game.
This is the most beautiful reaction to this song I have seen. This song is an internal monologue, the things that she wants to say but won't because that would break wherever is left of her, and him, apart. The "rules" are the social norms, where the Swedes, their country, hold stoicism high. So when he comes to shake her hand, civility has replaced intimacy, and her heart still craves what they once had. And even there, in a place where she has been so hurt, she doesn't want him to be hurt by her words or even her demeanour. This is a stage beyond intimacy, this is self sacrificing love.
@Brendan H, you have provided the best analysis of this song, which makes it even more mind-blowing that Bjorn (ex-husband/guitarist) wrote these lyrics for Agnetha (ex-wife) to sing, while standing on stage next to him.
Very visceral reaction to a terribly sad song. I don't suppose it will make you feel better to know this was written about her divorce from her husband who is one of the guys in the video. ABBA are legendary. Some of the most beautiful harmonizing, catchy melodies and those girls can sang! You could react to anything of theirs, probably it was a hit back in the day..their catalog is huge!

Sweden, Sweden, Sweden, what talents you create! What is it with this little country in the North? Answer: one of their treasures is / has been that they have a natural aptitude for singing and for music in general. It is in their genes. See for example "allsång på Skansen", Stockholm, where they meet and sing together once a week in the summertime. And their people's soul goes very, very deep. ABBA was one of the very first artists to be known outside of Scandinavia. A big hug from Norway, neighbour of Sweden.
Cuz they cant... Abba was without a "once in a life time" phenomenon. Even if music was still based on skill and talent, they couldnt match this. The fact that skill and talent has almost nothing to do with music anymore, anyhope of someone making something even remotely close to this is a pipe dream. Thanks to technological advancements you dont actually need talent to be a musician these days. As long as you get 14 year old girls soak their panties or have enough cleavage to make 14 year old boys show up even if they dont like the music, youre golden. If you cant sing or play doesnt matter, that can be fixed in post porduction. What you CANt fix in post production is someones face. So... they prioritizes hot people with no talent. This is why 50% of Paradise Hotel bimbos gets fakking record deals after the show ends.
When you're 10 you can like Dancing Queen (as many ABBA fans were then), you've got to be a lot older and to have gone through the mill to realise how great this song is.
The feature about this song is that the lyrics were written by Bjorn, the guy who plays the acoustic guitar, for his ex-wife Agnetha, the girl who sings it. "But tell me does she kiss, like I used to kiss you?..."
The legendary Agnetha Faltskog eventually became something of a recluse; escaping the public eye that turned ABBA into one of the biggest pop groups in the world. In their heyday they had little critical acclaim but sold by the armful. One suggestion is that the group was Sweden's second biggest export after Volvo cars!

No, they were offered a billion dollars for a YEAR LONG tour. That's a huge difference from a single concert. When you are 60-70 years old, a year of hard work is not much to look forward to.
@@johnPaul-qn3dg The tax rate in Sweden in the 1970s was 90% for the rich, so they didn't make as much as you might expect. The boys are worth ten times what the girls are worth, because they can profit from future recordings of their songs (such as the Mamma Mia movies), while the girls get income only from their old recordings (such as the ABBA GOLD record.) Anna-Frid married a prince later in life, who has since died, so she probably inherited a large portion of his estate. The entire group lost a lot of money because they let their manager invest it and the investments failed.
@@TheNameOfJesus Agnetha must get some money from her own songs. Only one made it onto an Abba studio album (not surprising given the competition) but she's written quite a number of hit records for herself and others both pre and post ABBA that have been successful in Europe and elsewhere. In addition she has recorded about a dozen solo albums both pre and post ABBA totalling several million sales. Her first post ABBA album sold 1.5 million in its first year. Her net worth on several sites is reported as around $200 million. Bjorn at around $300 million. These are probably not accurate numbers but I doubt the boys are worth ten times as much.

About 10 years ago they turned down a billion dollars for one live reunion concert.
They've written a number of billion-dollar musicals, Chess and of course Mama Mia, they are not short of cash.
But now they are working on a couple of new songs.. cant wait to hear them
