I'm a bit surprised that he didn't cry out for SANTA's help, since by logic, if Krampus is real, then so is Santa

Actually, this brings up some questions, would Santa be only one of his depictions, would it be all of his depictions, or would a different depiction be the Santa for the place he originates from?

Santa (aka. St. Nikolaus) works with the Krampus together. They are companions and Krampus is one of his many "servants". Krampus is not the anti Santa, nor is he like the Grinch to ruin Christmas. Quiet the opposite. Krampus is there to make sure that people uphold the Christmas spirit. In other words Krampus is Santa's enforcer. On the 5th of December, on St. Nicolaus day, you see Santa and Krampus always travelling together in two separate sleds. Santa rewards the good children. Krampus punishes the naughty ones. It's all done within Santa (St.Nicolaus) will. So if Krampus shows up during Nightfall on the 5th and 6th of December, it is because Santa thinks you were naughty and you need to be taught a lesson.

Patricia Orellana krampus seems to be the one who shows up to punish families who lose faith in Christmas. There is no one else deserving of krampus's punishment in the town, hence why the family are basically the only ones there besides a few others however I doubt anyone who isn't related by blood to the family was killed or punished unless they were added to enforce the fact that krampus was there to punish. Santa let's krampus do his work, hence why santa isn't there.

I think the ending can be taken two ways.
A: Krampus has now stranded them in his snow globe and they are trapped there as an eternal reminder.
B: The snow globes are just a way of watching all the families so Krampus can ensure they take his punishment seriously and never forget, like the Bells.

Alexander Shullaw Well in relation to the movie. YES!!!
But (and I'm not trying to be rude to your comment, sorry if I am), Krampus as a traditional story watches everyone all year with St. Nick, especialy those he had been to before. Krampus KEPT people in the Underworld. He mearly took them there to his place to disabling them, not as a punishment, but as a lesson which HAPPENED to be a punishment. Krampus was never an evil character. He loved everyone as much as St. Nick. So much so, that was willing to disappointed children who were naughty and disobeyed their parents, or who's parents couldn't discipline them.
However to expand on your point. The scriptwriters are movie makers, nothing is ever "Realistic" it's always glorified to make it dramatic and make you enjoy it. Shakespeare started it with "Dramatic" plays. and well, we hate those moments after observing them, but we still enjoy a good story telling technique. So back on topic (sorry), the Grandmother says her parents were taken to the underworld (fare enough, but it was mainly a legend to "scare" children who believed, or encourage them to belive Santa would be kind to them with a reward making effort worth it). However she says she never saw them again. Which probably means no one ever returns from the Underworld.
Then again (long winded I know, sorry... nearly there), when the boy looks out the window, he see all the houses and other people outside. So it could just be Krampus' looking Glass.
AMD FINNALY (again sorry), another story telling technique, the camera and lighting effect go very sort of, dreamy... or imagination looking at the end, maybe to signify it being a fabrication, or to show purity....
So, one will have to ask the screen writers to find out the actual fact of this specific story, based on a character from a legend.... But I liked your point!

As many have stated this ending explanation is false. The writers covered this in their graphic novel and Krampus watches all families through the snow globes and the bell is a reminder; the boy did what his grandmother did not and he passed the test so everyone was allowed to live.

The comic book tie-in to the movie actually suggests that the snow globe is Krampus' way of keeping an eye on the family to make sure they learned their lesson. Their sacrifices set them free, but in a way they're still within his power because he's keeping them under surveillance.

“Vaguely foreign”= spends half the movie speaking fluent German 😂

  • @pfitz9346
    @pfitz9346 6 років тому +1217

She's not really vaguely foreign she's obviously German. That's what she's speaking and that's the origin of Christmas trees and krampus. Krampus was a pagan Germanic belief that fused with the Christmas holiday at some point along with the Dutch "Sinter Klaas" or Santa Claus/Saint Nicholas. They all mixed together into the Christian Christmas tradition.
In the original Christmas krampus story(since the pagan tradition was totally different) krampus is partnered with Saint nick. Saint Nick gives the good children toys and krampus gives the bad kids the lumps of coal and takes them away.
And he's not capturing them. He's watching them. Think back to the old Christmas tradition and songs. "he sees you when you're sleeping. He knows when you're awake." That's how he judges your soul. Before krampus and Santa merged they were both watching over children judging them in the tradition.

i like weed grandma is old and her parents could have died from natural causes like old age. But she also could have not said she wanted it to go back to normal or that she would sacrifice herself for her family. It seemed like Krampus actually killed her family and that's why she was scared of him. It's less scary if they let you live afterwards. So grandma's parents could have either died from natural causes or been killed by Krampus.

I figured the snow globes were how he kept tabs on previously dealt with families after teaching them their lessons. I mean Granny didn't get her family back and she didn't get killed by Krampus even though she was the reason he showed up. So I figured because you're boy learned his lesson and apologized and took back his wish, Krampus just reset everything, but this didn't happen to granny because she didn't confront him and make the sacrifice. After all, if you're interpretation is true, why wasn't granny and her family trapped in a snow globe? You'd think she wouldn't be around for the movie at all if that's what the ending meant.

I'll say one thing is this director leaves many clues hinting to the big climax of the ending. Sacrifice is used many times yes, but the movie had started with a random zoom in on Scrooge is being told he is having three spirits visit him to change his fate. Tom mentions how the family will be staying for three more days until Christmas is over, as familiar to when Scrooge has three spirits visit him so he can change the fate he received. We learned Omi has suffered Krampus's wrath and loss of loved ones due to her wish. Then we go through the three days of hell, the next being worse than the last. As the first day is over, Beth is taken and so is Howie in pretty brutal ways to see for teenagers and for a pre-teen. The second day we see the Jack-in-a-box, and the demon toys used to scare the hell out of the adults, continuing with the loss of Jordan. When everyone is taken, and Max is left behind, he takes back his wish and shoes the sacrifice of giving , the true meaning that Christmas gives to people in the real world. If you remember the Scrooge, he is given a fake death and wakes up startled to see himself and everyone he knows, specifically Tiny Tim, who is shown dead at one point. Max is thrown into a pit of hell, and wakes up in his room. He stared outside to see the other houses, and a heaven like setting. It's to give the audience a more of a breathtaking stare towards the new color, our eyes being adjusted to the new atmosphere, making it more seem like it is too good to be true. If you look at comparison with the very cleverly placed imagery, Death spared Scrooge of death and purgatory, carrying the chains of the lives he had taken with profit and possibly death due to profit and possession. Max is being given that second chance, unlike Omi who had hid the entire time her family had been taken, knowing what was to come. Max had pleaded to have his family come back, and in the way he hoped, he did. Max and his entire family is spared to live a better life in the holiday, the snow globe represents a way for Krampus to watch over Max, seeing if he still will believe in the spirit of the holiday. We see the houses in the reflection of the window, everyone remembering the three days of hell they had suffered through.

I think Krampus lets everyone off with a warning with the Krampus ball, but he keeps an eye on them. And the lava pit represented the snowglobe entrance. Since Max was the last one left, he was the last one to wake up. This would mean, Beth woke up first, Howie Jr. second, Jordan third, Rosie fourth, Aunt Dorothy sixth, then the baby, Howard next, Tom, Linda, Sarah, Stevie woke up next. Then, Max wakes up, because he was the last.

Hey, just wanted to say good analysis but unfortunately not entirely correct. You got almost everything right up until the very end when the snowglobe came into play and I have to admit this one is a bit tricky, after the fact there was a lot of confusion so a bunch of the people involved in the movie came out to give some clarifications.
Apparently the ending was supposed to be about Krampus using harsh punishment for the purpose of teaching a lesson like he did with children back in the day, he taught Max the true value of family through loss. Unlike Grandma who lost everyone because she didn't realize the lesson until after it was over, Max proved he had gotten the message and earned his family back... with the small change that from now on Krampus will be keeping an eye on them. After all he has to make sure the lesson sticks because if it doesn't Max loses it all again and for good this time. It kinda fits with Krampus roots, after all he enjoys the twisted punishment but because he's bound to Santa he has to hand them out fairly for the sake of teaching a lesson and if the lesson is learned he is obligated to release those he's tormenting.
That being said you were very skillful, analyzed everything well, and the ending you proposed would have made total sense if word of god hadn't come out afterward that contradicted you. I applaud you sir.

The way I saw the ending was a bit different (no offense to your theory though). I think what happened was Krampus gave them a 2nd chance but he's watching them to see that what unfolded that night never happens again (or else). And he does so through snowglobes prior to why so many snowglobes with houses in them are seen. Anyway that's just what I heard. But good video.

There's another theory that's corroborated with the prequel comic that came out. Essentially, the family WAS saved, but they will always be watched over by Krampus, in case they ever lose their spirit again. He's basically keeping watch over them (much like Santa).

4:09 There are two theory's on why they're in the snow globe at the end , yes , I copied and pasted them from the IMDB trivia page for this movie , why do you give a fuck?
The movie's ambiguous ending has spawned two fan theories: 1.) That the Engels and their family are trapped in the snow globe, condemned to repeat Christmas morning for eternity in a twisted version of Hell or 2.) They were given a second chance, and the snow globe is Krampus' means of watching over them. Although writer/director Michael Dougherty has refused to confirm which theory is true, the tie-in comic book, Shadow of Saint Nicholas, confirms that the happy ending is the true one. The comic has murdered characters resurrected without any hint of a twist, showing that Krampus is willing to give people a second chance as long as they prove they've learned their lesson. Unlike his grandmother, Max was brave enough to confront Krampus and prove he'd learned his lesson, which was why Max had his family returned and the grandmother's didn't.
My theory is that since Max wanted Christmas to be just like it used to be , then Max's wish came true , it is just like it used to be , but it's only going to be like that for the rest of his and his family's life

Just watched it. To me the ending can either mean one of two things: 1) They are "trapped" inside the snowglobe, as part of Krampus' sadistic collection (like this video mentions), or, the snowglobe represents one of many "windows" Krampus uses to keep an eye on families (he's basically like Santa Clause, but in reverse, so if St. Nicholas can know who's been nice and reward them for it, Krampus, who is the opposite of St. Nic, can also know who's been naughty and also "reward" them).

My family and I thought that when they stopped and stared at each other they were just remembering what happened and maybe trying to dismiss it all as a dream or accept it. Then when I saw they were in a snowglobe we were torn. Was Krampus just spying on them and all those snowglobes were those that escaped him or how he watched you? Or were they in hell?
I think they made it with lessen learned.

I'm not sure if the ending was Krampus "WATCHING" them as they were trapped in the snowglobe... To me the ending with the way it was shot seemed more like a "Dream" or "Alternate" reality sequence. What really tipped the scales for me was when both families seemed so cordial and friendly towards each other even though the previous days (Which is important to add as this was a multi-day terror BEFORE Christmas) there was massive chaos and dissension before Krampus' arrival. Then after they didn't acknowledge or remember what had happened outside of the child. AND even then you have to add the the fact was the Child Sleeping completely several days before Christmas (When the gift was opened at the end by the father on Christmas day) to make this theory legitimate? I think not. Everyone seemed confused rather than having "eureka" moment of what happened previously. Then adding the fact what was added on with the Grandmother whose family was completely kidnapped while she was the only one left behind. It just seems more likely that they were trapped (IMO).

This is why I like Halloween.
Christmas feels like an emotional obligation that can be either a burden or helpful.
Sometimes, I think we should forget about Santa and more about what Christmas was about. Christ. Now before you all shout "CHRIST FAG" here's my point.
Christmas today feels like you're forced and obligated to tolerate harmful family members instead of your more intimate family that you know and love. Several times my Christmas was ruined because of extended family and family members who were more hell bent on making the holiday about themselves instead of just leaving me and my family (my mom, dad and sister) at home in peace enjoying each other's company instead.
At that point, we had to worry about who to give gifts too, how much we had to spend and all that bullshit. You're forced to tolerate bullshit at what suppose to be a time of love and peace. Instead you fuk your wallet for the sake of giving your unappreciative extended family good gift while in return they buy you tat from dollar tree.
Then again, I guess that's charm...Jesus forgave his enemies and stuff but I really don't think he would stick around to tolerate that bullshit.

How do you explain that?

I'm just saying that in the movie he looks out his window and sees his whole neighborhood, but when the snow globe zooms out it only shows just his house, and because of that it makes me think about the happy ending. Plus, I saw another video with lots of evidence to support the happy ending, and the guy who made the video, even he preferred the dark ending and he still believed the happy ending.

I love how the movie turned out to be (imho, at least) a total inversion of the feel-good, "learned my lesson, thanks!" movies that you'd normally see. That despite Max's heartfelt speech at the end and despite the family learning the importance of being a family, they're screwed anyway. They can be together now, but they're together in hell or some equivalent.

Krampus puts max in a snow globe of Infinitum, trapping him into a infinite
Christmas, while he but not his family are aware of it. When ever he
goes to sleep and wakes up again, it's the same exact day but again...
and again forever and ever... the same moment of him waking up and
getting presents will go on forever. Basically hell. Because that's
      where krampus dumped him...

Blake_the_hero67 How is it stupid? They made the point several times that Krampus doesn't give, he only takes. Why make that point throughout the entire movie unless it was telling us that hey, these people are screwed regardless of what they do.

I guess most people just can't accept the family's fate in the ending. It seems obvious that after Max woke up, everything seems off. There's this filter which is commonly used for dream sequences. And this somehow gave me an idea that I am in for a surprise. And indeed it was! The family is trapped eternally in this Krampus limbo, and doomed to celebrate Christmas forever. I guess, the ending shows what happened to the people Krampus took. I know it is not the usual happy ending that we expected it to be, but this is horror. And the VO at the ending somehow implies that Krampus didn't grant Max's wish ( he does not give), but decides to punish him for eternity. A very dark and disturbing ending for a holiday movie. Still a fun flick. :)

I am german and this is the by far scariest Christmas movie involving Krampus ever. When I was a kid, on the 6th of December Friends of my mother would get dressed up as Saint Nikolaus and Krampus, knocking on my door. They both had big, fluffy beards, one White, the other Brown and messy. They both had bags, but Krampus also had what looked like an old fashioned broom but without a broomstick, resembling These Things Kids used to get beaten with. I was told good Kids get chocolate from Saint Nikolaus, the bad Kids are put into the bag of Krampus and basically get kidnapped. Believe me when I say, it was scary as hell for a 4 or 5 year old Girl to sit in front of These (in my eyes) gigantic, full grown men, asking me if I was a good Girl or not. Saint Nikolaus read a short Poem from his "golden book" (it was an Atlas wrapped in shiny present paper with the text of the Poem inside), gave me chocolate and left with Krampus. My mom and sister, who was around 21 at the time, as well as the two guys dressed up, had a good time Setting the whole Thing up just for me (which still is incredibly sweet). oh and if anyone reads all this, thanks!

i don't think the family Krampus was punishing is trapped is a snow-glob in hell. They could only be just kept under surveillance by Krampus which explains the other snow globs in Krampuses workshop because Krampus believes They've & especially Max has learned there lesson.

And wouldn't the grandma have been in a snow globe hell before if this was true? I think you're right that he is simply keeping an eye upon those he has "gifted."

    • @ruggedryan1890
      @ruggedryan1890 8 років тому +1

+Warp Angel But the grandmother didn't forsake his gift like the kid did. She hid in her room till they leave, then she just gets the bell as Krampus leaves. She regrets her wish but he doesn't show mercy to her. Her grandson throws the bell at him and tries to take it back. I personally don't think Krampus was all "you've learned your lesson". He's a evil spirit who punishes people, whether you "learned" your lesson or not. I really think the director wanted a darker ending and a "be careful what you wish for" kinda lesson. They're in Hell, maybe to relive that night forever

    • @ruggedryan1890
      @ruggedryan1890 8 років тому

+Tamya Maragh or...the other snow globes are other families he's captured and are tormenting. the fact it comes down to is that neither interpretations are wrong. I personally like the darker ending, mainly because I've seen my fair share of happy endings for these kinds of movies and plus to me, Krampus doesn't do the learn your lesson thing. he's evil, plain and simple. he gets a kick out of torturing and punishing because that's his thing. if you like the good ending where everything ends well and good, that's fine and i can't really prove that didn't happen anymore than you can without a doubt prove mine is wrong. it's not clear and it's done that way on purpose.

  • @DogOfHades

(Sigh) Seeing that you explained Jack, I will pitch in. Krampus takes his victims and imprisons them in his collection of snow globes where Xmas is everlasting.
The kid would have been spared but since he rejected Krampu's gift (and was rude about it) he tossed him there with the rest of them.
The voices the relatives were listening at the end was an indication that their memories of the tragic events were coming back, just before the horrible realization of their true fate.

I just watched the commentary for the movie last night, and Michael had mentioned how he saw all this debating about the ending. He decided to twist it up and leave it for open discussion. So there is no concrete answer. But I go with the idea that Krampus is merely watching them, with the snowglobe being his way into their world. There would be no point in keeping every person/family he came to punish. If he did, there would be no one to warn others of his presence.
