I would have to rebuttal this by presuming the extreme tedious art of this field of work, as it is not meant for the weak minded. The angle that you are getting at is more of a optimistic view of the movie, giving the Mother way too much of credit of empathy, and a nurturing view. Whereas, I view the opposite of her mother, lacking a natural, nurturing, unselfish environment for her child. Instead, Ella's upbringing is replaced with a toxic environment, full of obsessive compulsive behavior of perfection, largely stemming from her mothers ONE & ONLY soul pursuit of perfection of her work. This is very much shown at the beginning of the movie, as her mother is almost on her deathbed, but instead of using this precious time to create a heartfelt relationship with her daughter, so that she is left with atleast a mere memory of a "loving mother", once she is long and gone. Instead, her mother selfishly uses her last days on his earth to use her daughter as a tool, rather than a living human being. Ella, only seeing her mother as a perfectionist her whole life(even until her dying breath), has created a sinister victim own in being. Making it where Ella only feels accepted or validated through her work, rather than just being good enough by simply being her daughter. Another example her mothers emotional neglect, is shown right before her mother had a stroke. Ella's mother noticed her daughter was very tired, but there was not even a inch of concern or empathy of her daughter's mental or physical state, instead she gaslighted her. She insulted Ella, by bluntly saying the least she could do is help her finish her animation (the same work that she has prioritized her daughters entire life) once again, dismissing Ella's feelings or opinions. In a similar manner, her mother's final act of "selfishness" of having a stroke, which lead to a coma, leaves Ella in a endless unfulfilled mindset, of knowing she will never be able to live up to her mothers expectations or a final validation. Subsequently, leaving a void of emotional frustrations and unanswered questions, that she will never get, this only worsens the childhood trauma of neglect and unrealistic perfection that her mother has left behind. Due to this toxic cycle and baggage, Ella has no other option but to spiral into self-loathing and self-abuse, because she believes that is all she was worthy of. This has caused detrimental effects of low self-esteem and a inferiority complex, thus continuing to decay Ellas mind and reality. It is inferred that her childhood was filled with criticism, judgement, and lack of empathy from her mother. Being raised by a narcissistic parent, created a form of sociopathic behavior displayed in Ella, as an an adult. This is why she is able to further and further dissociate from reality and humans ethics. Therefore, creating a blur of right and wrong, going beyond dangerous boundaries to achieve her goals at what ever cost. Even if the cost is death and murder, she has no remorse for others, such as her boyfriend or peers. She just uses them as tools for her creations in her twisted reality. In summary, Ella represents nothing but a over-worked "tool/puppet" that had no place to go, and once her mother passed away, this just further cracked her already fragile underdevelopment mind(egg, which was the symbol in this movie). Her mother's selfish-obsessive/narcissistic constant display of aspirations of her work created this monster within Ella. Side note: I also wanted to point out, that it seemed that her Mothers obsession with her work seems to created a household that lacked a wholesome family environment. There was no mention of Ellas father(from my understanding), this is also another sign that her mother prioritized her work more than family. How come no one else visited Ellas mom in the hospital? Did she even have a love life or friends outside of work?, or was her whole life centered around her work. The reason I believe this theory, is because as you see throughout the movie Ella is very cold and dismissive, of even her own relationship with her boyfriend. He has constantly displayed acts of love/affection and attends to her needs, but once again "Ella selfishly prioritizes her work/animation" over her own love-life, not being able to see it is slowly destroying her relationship.....

Stopmotion animation is a special kind of madness, a willingness to accept that a single slip of the hand can destroy everything. Given the rich history of stopmotion animation in horror movies I'm surprised there aren't more animators as characters.

I'd love a psychological horror about the stress that can come with being an animator. The closest thing I can think of is an episode of Paranoia Agent where this studio is trying to create an anime under a tight schedule, only for one of the staff members to constantly screw things up, leading to everyone becoming more and more unhinged as the episode goes on.

@@JG-pt3xe Since a lot of animation is done by small teams, in tight quarters, under heavy physical and mental pressure, it seems the sort of thing that would give itself to psychological horror.
There are also a lot of interesting mental/physical side-effects of working too long on animation without a break. When I was finishing my college thesis I remember having bouts where I would see the world moving in "key-frames" or peoples' mouths would seem to be out of sync with their words. I would also find myself tracing the movement lines of people's bodies as they walked past me on the street. Don't forget to take breaks kids!

Using Ella's darkness as a jumping off point, and based off art as a creative outlet to express trauma, I theorize that the Ash Man in Ella's story is someone that abused/molested her in her childhood. The whole story she's telling is a repressed trauma surfacing now that her domineering mother can't control her actions/thoughts. Think about how she fears the Ash Man touching her & putting something inside her. When children are abused, they often use a doll as a proxy to show how/where they were abused on their body. I mean, what do I know? But that's just my two cents. I'd love to see who agrees, or any other theories as to what this whole story represents.

Mad God was a passion project by Phil Tippet (The guy that made a bunch of stop motion for Starwars and many other projects) it took him close to 30 years for him to complete the project after he took several breaks from it. It’s very unique and has many interpretations, but the basic gist is that the movie depicts a world in which God has gone mad from humanities defiance of him, and basically made the world a living hell, with really creative and disturbing body horror, and a wordless journey through its depths, mostly done in stopmotion. I believe the streaming Service ‘Shudder’ has it.

I mean, Ash Man is clearly the part of her mind that is not happy with the way she is heading, right? That is why it snapping was so "unexpected" - it was the part of herself that was disgusted with what she became, the part that was ugly but had to be accepted, the part that gave her the chance (the egg) but she rejected it, and so her end is death. It was meant to be not because of fate, but because her actions brought upon these consequences.

This film thematically echoes Harold Bloom's "The Anxiety of Influence".
According to Bloom, writers & poets are burdened with the understanding that, generally speaking, every story already has been told. This knowledge jostles against the artist's need to create.
"Stopmotion's" atmosphere of dread reminds me of "The Censor", a recent British horror movie.

      ""Old woman, young woman, kid"
is this going to be another the start is the end movie?... yes, yes it is.
Adding a stop motion aspect to this old story doesn't make it original"
I mean I wouldn't pretend to be a bad person to make a point about bad people.
This movie is still bad because it's just so cliché, my point still stands, adding stop motion doesn't make it original.
We can't beat up our wives and lynch black people in a post man outfit to point out inequality.
This is why I don't pay for "art", I download everything, seed everything, the only digital thing that I've ever bought are programs/media that I truly believe changed my life.
I use Microsoft products all day every day, but somebody else can and will do it for free (linux), this movie is garbage the whole plot was obvious 1/4 through the movie, Sponge Bob The Movie, turning on a car with a spatula yeah that's unoriginal, david hasselhoff being a boat, and bob and patrick being reunited by a tear... that is a movie I'm willing to buy a DVD and Blueray of, store and share for ever.

This is how media consumption is more complicated than most politics suggest. People can be completely fine with the most graphic (fictional) media but the relatively slightest real life trauma is hugely affecting because the mind recognizes that its for real this time. People can generally cope with extreme life events, careers, environments but when in the 'safety' of consuming media, the trauma finds room to trigger. Its how even if every adult plays violent video games regularly, the rate of violence in general might not go up (it may even decrease), but an already mentally compromised youth might incorporate certain ideas from a violent video game into their increasingly toxic worldview. We interact with other people in a more expected Monkey See Monkey Do (especially when pattern forming as a child) but media is arguably a whole other story, its more of an internal mirroring.
Horror film buffs are among the most peaceloving and kind people you'll meet, though perhaps strange, while Wholesome media uh... fans? Focusers? Activists? Whateve, people who want pure and wholesome media (in their eyes) are sometimes among the most creepy, concerning, controlling, maybe just rude people you'll meet.

No one uses that dumb word: "spoopy" anymore.
It was stupid to begin with and I'm glad it died as soon as it began. It's sounds completely stupid. Spooky has always been good enough to describe scary. No stupid baby talk language is needed. "sPo0Py": sounds like something that a toddler would call diarrhea.

LOVED this movie, captured the anxieties and feelings of inadequacy that creating art can lead one to feel like nothing else I've ever seen and portrayed the rabbit hole an artist can find in fully giving themselves to their art better than anything I've ever seen. Aisling Franciosi was also brilliant in the movie, no surprises there!
