- Final Fantasy VII Remake knows you want to hear the legendary Let the Battles Begin! (aka Those Who Fight), so it holds back for a while.
If A Link Between Worlds gave me the idea for this series, then FF7R concretized it when I tried explaining this to my sister and ended up telling her "forget it, I'll make a video" in 2019.

And it succeeds.
I'm not going to mince words, I F***IN' ADORED the buildup throughout the city until the real theme kicked up in the train scene, and I HATE that too few people noticed it or called it out. This is music direction done to a magical scale.

I didn’t really take in how well they did it. I realized it was different but this break down made me go back and experience it again. What a beautiful moment
Remake and Rebirth are pretty much too good for casual gamers.

I don't think I've ever heard it put into words exactly how i feel about the full battle theme finally playing, i loved the way it was teased and built up until finally exploding in that final battle of the bombing mission, I don't think they could've made it anymore perfect.
Yep. From the tutorial battle, I thought, "Oh - they redid the battle theme. Booo." An hour later, I was WAITING for the 17 note progression, but they tease it with only 7... "Damn! That was my favorite part of the theme!", I thought. Oh well. Still rocks.
Then the town battle. And it's SO big at the start. You can feel the goosebumps start on your arms and when that progression actually hits the full 17 it's like, "God DAMN it feels good to be a gangster!"
Honestly might be one of the best composed songs ever made.
I sure as heck wouldn't disagree. I don't know how after 23 years, hearing it can still feel so awesome!

Will say that FF7 Remake also teases the Fight On boss music too. Listen to how the music is different for the two main bosses in the reactors.
The "low key" battle music as field music reminds me of Fire Emblem Awakening onwards. The field music loops until a battle starts, when the complete song can be heard after a swift transition.
I've been trying to determine the first instance of this, but it's a deep rabbit hole. Even Mario World does something similar with Yoshi drums...

Reminds me of another song that appears in Ff7 Remake near the end of Chapter 17. You get greeted with some different rendition that brings references to the original melody of the song, but feels very different and _slow_. But at some point as you progress, you are greeted with a new rendition of the same song that hits you incredibly hard, because it brings back the original energy of the original song. And that impact is strong because you were building up to that moment with the prior teases, the initial slower renditions of that song.
Oh. Oooooh. Jenova, yes indeed! If I had all the free time in the world I'd cover FF7R the same way I just did Xenoblade 3... maybe there's a reasonable half-way?
I'm so happy you started that serie of videos with FF7R. Its music is really great, I listened to the whole OST so many times.

This is my favourite piece of music in any game. I listen to it at least once a week when out walking.
Some people were unhappy with FF7 Remake not being a true remake, but I appreciate that they kept the heart of the original story (and music), but updated it for a modern audience. You still get that nostalgia if you played the original, but experience the world in a new and different way.
I hope we get to hear a lot of the original music in future FF7 Remake games, with their own updated take.
I'm kind of glad it's different, makes future events that we know happen in the original a little more uncertain (looks at Aerith)
A remake should be a remake, not a new game.
@@octavia8836 I know it's a 1 year old comment but I want to say my opinion as well. The word "Remake" does not mean a 1:1 adaptation of a game/movie/etc. People tends to believe that a lot, but the meaning of Remake is "to make anew" so there is no a strict rule saying that it must be 1:1. A great example can be MGS Twin Snakes were while the story is similar has several moments not present in the original such as the slowmotion scenes, or RE 2/3/4 which are more connections to each other than before. Sure, with the ads and merchandise Square made us believe that the FF7 Remake Project is a 1:1 adaptation and maybe that was the wrong thing to do, but honestly I love what they are doing by telling a same story but with the addiction of the entire FF7 Compilation and also giving a possible end to its story by telling us a sequel at the same time.
Right like... if you want to play the OG story, it's available on emulators! I like the OG game just fine. Its okay to have something a bit different.

With jenova too. 1) wasnt expecting jenova to be in the first part of remake and 2) there’s a compilation I seen on YT of streamers reacting to the jenova theme when they hear phase 3 and go crazy, I had their same reaction 🤣
Not going to lie, I got hit by several attacks I could have dodged or guarded against because I was taken by surprise by the soundtrack's teasing.
I have the exact feeling when the very first time play Remake, got teased several time until this point, OH YEAH SO SATISFIED

Man this video gave me the same reaction when I was listening to the battle theme. The teasing tracks were placed so good then when you finally get the full theme. you not only get hit by nostalgia but hype. Makes me want to replay it again. Freaking chills dude

I played FF7R JUST TO hear the music in context (some of the OST was previewed ahead of the launch). Wait 'til you hear what they did with the boss theme (like 5 custom remixes) and JENOVA, and One-Winged Angel.
...frankly each of these deserves a stand-alone video of mine.
PLEASE do more fromthe FF7 Remake. You managed to put into words something I noticed and couldnt quite articulate myself. I would love to see your analysis of the other tracks!

It's, uh, complicated.
Most of the time I'm not, as English isn't my first language and I have to redo takes and edit them together. I just leave gaps and try to have the right facial expression!
BUT when it matters, I make sure I'm actually listening. It's the case for the three FF7R battle themes, and for A Link Between World's Hyrule Field 2, and Celeste's Reach for the Summit, and Ace Combat 7's Daredevil, etc.
i love this new series! it feels refreshing to see you get to actually speak, aside from making "the funny shopkeeper voice" all the time. thumbs up!
The music in the opening to this game had me hooked right away. I never played FF7, or any FF really. Just tried Remake because a friend was hyping it up. They got me with the opening title splash into the bombing mission theme, right into the first combat encounter. I swung the Buster Sword one time and immediately loved the game. The world building was already so captivating, the gameplay felt really good, and then the rest of the opening just brought it all home. Blowing the reactor, meeting Aerith, escaping Shinra and jumping onto the train, it was all so damn good.
I wish there were a link for the 3rd version of the song with that opening part to it
In my opinion they should have surrounded Cloud by about 50 soldiers to make the climactic music and fight more grand. 😊

I’m ngl breakthrough, the version of the battle theme in the city is my favorite version of the 7 fight theme, I remember when I got to hear it for the first time I smiled like doomguy getting a new gun 😂

I knew there was a reason at that exact part is when the hairs on my neck stood up and I got the full nostalgia hit. Right there I knew I was in for a real treat with this game.

Oddly, I always liked the OG climax better. New one is not bad but I like the way original one isolates just a few instruments to make them stand out better.
I don't disagree. One of the reasons video game music is such a strong genre is that for a couple decades, composers had a limited number of instruments to work with, and those instruments had limited texture. They had to make sure every audible detail pulled its weight, so the music has strong melodies (and counter-melodies).

@@Banana-cc5rx much, not all, of rebirths music is just crap. There was several points in my playthrough where I literally asked myself what the heck I was listening to. The remixes of original ost music was fantastic, but when it was time for something new, it sounded like it was from a completely different game and didn’t match the tone at all

I like the remake but I HATE how they butchered the KEY ascending phrase in the best battle theme of all time, Those Who Fight. They absolutely fucked up and ruined the whole melody just to do some BS fuck you variations on it. As you said, it FOREVER teases the proper melody, but NEVER gives it to you. It fucking sucks and almost single handedly ruins the game for me. The conceit of ruining the single best phrase of music in perhaps all of Final Fantasy disgusts me
