Public Service Broadcasting are releasing live favourite 'The Other Side' this September. Filmed live at Secret Garden Party Festival in July 2015.
J. Willgoose, Esq., the mastermind behind PSB, describes the track as the "most emotional moment" on the album as it delivers emotive charges of drama, heroism and wonder.
Stereogum who premiered the song wrote: "Featuring clips of the Apollo 8 launch, 'The Other Side' plays like an epic sci-fi score that you can dance to at times. Short PA communications from ground control in Houston are enveloped by a synth bass sequence and a simple drum pattern which fades as the Apollo 8 comes into some peril toward the middle of the track. As ground control loses communication and the urgency in the agent's voice grows, the instrumentation returns to build to a climax with atmospheric synths, crashing cymbals, and more complex drum hits."

This track presses my buttons in a very special way: working as a radio operator, I lost contact with an aircraft over Antarctica for several hours. The palpable relief I felt when I was finally able to confirm they were safe is directly echoed in this track, as is the heart-in-mouth waiting.
Sounds fascinating! What's the story?
What the other dude said, sounds like story around the campfire time.
@@drummermachine12345 I was working at Rothera research station in Antarctica in 2006. Part of my duties as a radio operator was to speak to aircraft every half hour, take their position and that all was well. One flight departed Rothera for the tourist camp at Patriot Hills - they were going to be the first flight into the campsite at the start of the summer season. They gave me a call to say that they were approaching to land, but there was no subsequent call to say that they'd landed safely. Since landing a small ski plane in Antarctica can be quite hazardous - sometimes you can land in a crevasse field - this final "landed safely" call was imporant. I called them a few times and got no response, and then started to become concerned. Eventually I was able to call the operations manager for their company (who was in South America) and he confirmed that they had heard from them and that all was well. Not that dramatic a story, but the heart-in-mouth feeling of "are these people safe" remains with me, and this track very much reminded me of it.
@@Heyiya-if see above!
I have listened to this piece of music absolutely countless times and it never gets any less tense.
So moving.
What a special bunch of guys these people are. Love this band
Perhaps over 10000 times?
Indeed!
I get goosebumps everytime I listen to this song
So im not alone
As contact is re-established? Every time I am nervous. 😂 It brings tears to my eyes.
As other people have already mentioned. This album should be on the curriculum for anyone doing modern history, music or science at school. Words fail me is all I can say...
The most unique British band since Roxy Music.
I've literally listened to this song every day since I discovered it. Huey Morgan played it on 6 Music and I was hooked.
Every single time the call comes in from the crew and contact re-established... I can't hold back the tears of joy and the thought of all those engineers and amazing people who made space travel possible.
Wonderful, wonderful song.
Inglebert Humperdink Same here my friend. Tears running down my face listening to this.
So I'm not the only one... :)
You're not alone. Every time this gets me :)
Same... Also cried watching this: ua-cam.com/video/ANv5UfZsvZQ/v-deo.html
So great to see smart young people sending rockets to space...
I've just heard it on 6 Music now!
It's a revelation to hear music that is not so much nostalgic (an uncritical view of the past), but that recovers and enlivens an optimistic outlook towards modernity. Such a tonic after years of tiresome cynicism. Fab.
Really well put.
Social history as music. Simply fantastic.
Listening to this driving home when the acquisition of signal came a wide spontaneous smile appeared on my face. And I'm not afraid to say that I started to cry. Absolutely nothing more to say. Fantastic
It's one of those fascinating things about science, they knew 99.999999% there would be no issue going around, but it's still that tiny element of doubt until they come back and get the good news
Sorry for the late reply.. 6 years.. Its fookin amazing how we can get to the moon but miss a Tubeface notification@@Gobtik
The Public Affairs Officer (PAO) speaking on this track is John McLeaish, he was on shift for Apollo 8 Lunar orbit insertion. On the PSB track, 'Go' you hear the PAO Doug 'play it cool' Ward and the CAPCOM, the famous Gene Kranz , who wrote an amazing book 'Failure is not an option' , get the audio version of it, well worth a listen. Doug Ward has seen the PSB videos on here and enjoyed them very much. He's in touch with a friend of mine on a NASA forum.
Jim Lovell was capcom form the moon landing Gene was FD
Charlie Duke was CAPCOM for the actual landing, various others, including Lovell, performed the duty at other times on the mission.
Definite elements of Depeche Mode to be heard in their sound, even Kraftwerk. This band are so good. For people my age this brings back floods of nostalgia. A longing for innocent days gone by when it seemed mankind could do anything. We even believed we could put an end to war. We were naive but innocent at the same time. This song is ambient and nostalgic, it’s a work of magic.
This song brings tears of joy to my eyes!
Yet it it's tears of joy.Apollo 8 can you Roger me
+busycell Absolutely wonderful how the music encapsulates the emotion of the mission.
you are not alone have wept many times whilst running on the South Downs listening to this song!so many emotions wrapped up in this song
me to!!
My mum, who was a teen during the 60s and followed the Apollo 8 mission on telly (or maybe it was radio) as it was happening, always tears up over this one. She says it catches the mood completely from how it was.
I'm not crying...you're crying...😢
Ultimate Soundtrack to the best things that humankind ever achieved
Apollo Control, Houston, 2 minutes 50 seconds from time of L.O.S. Now
Our distance away from the Moon 460 nautical miles, velocity 7417 feet per second
Here in Mission Control, we're standing by
There's uh certainly a great deal of anxiety at this moment
We acquire at 36 minutes
So at 68 hours 55 minutes, continuing to monitor, this is Apollo Control
So at this time we're gonna stand by
And continue to monitor the loops here in Mission Control for our 'go'/'no-go' decision
1 minute 30 seconds away now from Loss Of Signal
Our distance away from the Moon now 401 nautical miles,
Velocity reading 7535, as we continue with this flight of Apollo 8
Apollo 8, Houston, 1 minute to L.O.S., all systems go
Our flight control team in Mission Control here has examined the data and it looks good
So we have a combined crew-ground decision, we are 'go', repeat 'go', for lunar orbit insertion 1
Apollo 8, 10 seconds to go, you're 'go' all the way
Roger
Thanks a lot, troops
We'll see you on the other side
We've had, uh, Loss Of Signal with Apollo 8, at 68 hours 58 minutes 45 seconds,
We will watch with continuing interest the A.O.S. Clock here in Mission Control
They're travelling over the back side of the Moon now
Our velocity reading here 7777 feet per second
Now we are in our period of the longest wait
Continuing to monitor, this is Apollo Control, Houston
Apollo Control, Houston, we've acquired signal but no voice contact yet, we're standing by
We're looking at engine data and it looks good; tank pressure's looking good
Apollo 8, Apollo 8, this is Houston, Houston over?
Roger, Houston
We read you loud and clear
How do you read us?
Right, we've got it, we've got it
Apollo 8 now in lunar orbit; there's a cheer in this room
This is Apollo Control, Houston, switching now to the voice of Jim Lovell
By 60.5. Good to hear your voice
The unmanned Lunar Orbiter spacecraft traversed the moon perhaps over 10, 000 times,
But this is the first that a man aboard reported to his compatriots here on Earth
3:45 onwards - chills, particularly the voice of Jim Lovell. So good.
50 Years... good night, good luck, and a Merry Christmas to all, all of you on the Good Earth...
This whole entire album is just an incredible piece of art. Chills every time, with every song.
This song makes me cry of emotion each time I listen to it
I've seen this band from Ullapool to Berlin and they never fail to knock me off my feet.
Pure awesomeness!!! An authentic masterpiece song and video.
When Apollo 8 appears again, the song turns really emotional.
Many thanks for this.
I just hope this masterpiece of sound is played over and over this Christmas - the 50th anniversary of this incredible human achievement..
Goosebumps every time.
It's amazing the power those mission control broadcasts have. I was 10 years old when Apollo 11 landed on the moon. They're so moving, fraught with tension and danger but exhilarating when the Apollo craft respond. PSB capture that brilliantly.
Although not a song, but an amazing time during the days of the Apollo missions. Thing is, this is my favorite song! Amazing guys!
A masterpiece of music
this is a work of art... I never saw this, but the time was relevant, but any man who cannot understand the pioneer spirit and the fear of lost life, well he is can do one
my dad would have loved this... god bless his beautiful soul
50 years on from the Apollo 8 Lunar Orbit Insertion.
This track still gives me a shiver - so so good, and captures the moment wonderfully!
I heard a live session of this on the radio and i was immediately hooked on PSB. Now seen them live 3 times and become a huge fan. This track is the start of it all for me. Astonishingly good!
Absolute genius. Musically sparse but beautifully orchestrated and the feeling of euphoria you get when the lunar comms come back in is indescribable. Love the way the timings are real time and match the track.
LOVE TO HEAR IT EACH TIME I SEE THE MOON AND THE SUN UPSIDE IN THE UNIVERS ! EXCELLENT SOUND
Makes me cry every single time
They've jumped from unknown, through a galaxy of music I've listened, to top 5... in a couple of days since first hearing them!
Nice work all. The Cap Com voice takes me right back to my childhood, listening hard for AOS.
This is my kind of motivational music. Well done PSB Awesome track, great use of historical recordings and musically brilliant!
I was around when the Apollo missions news coverage were constantly on TV and I can only say that listening to this brings tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat !!!
Outstandingly beautiful and very intellectual in equal measure. Fly high and soar on the wings of your brilliant creations. Wow.....
If you love the Apollo mission stuff watch a film called The Dish. It captures the spirit of the age and the dramas of those missions. Well worth a watch.
OMG yes I second that recommendation. Also comedic, just to make it perfect.
It's a great song and video - I like the way the crowd is forced to listen to a song....... not really knowing what to do with themselves.
That drummer is great
Great work this video and tune it does bring tears my eyes as i remember i was just over 8 years old and hearing this broadcast was unbelievable for my generation and it still seemed science fiction. What incredible work they done back then with such basic technology.
Simply Top Notch arrangement ..a Super Delight for ears, spirit and Soul Thank You 🙏🙏🙏👏👏👏👏
Sirs, you are outstanding.
YOU GOT THE BEAT!!! BREATHTAKING!
Bloody fantastic,fellas!
This is music
Apollo 8 is by far my favourite mission. It doesn't get as much recognition as Apollo 11, but in my opinion it was as or even more significant.
Can't wait to see them - if you like them you might also like British Sea Power -
Would love to have PSB perform against great sporting achievements of the past - only black and white footage I hope - good luck for next album !!
+michael gray If you haven't seen them lived yet, prepare yourself for a treat.
Its such a shame I couldnt get to see them this year (not coming down far enough in the westcountry and work constraints!) But they never fail to keep me hooked
3:39 gives me chills
sublime - really fantastic track and even better live

A couple of points on "Stereogums" "premiere" of the piece
"....which fades as the Apollo 8 comes into some peril toward the middle of the track. As ground control loses communication and the urgency in the agent's voice grows",
1. Apollo 8 engaged in a planned circumnavigation of the moon. It did not come into some peril but this was a planned loss of signal as it went to "the other side".
2. There was no urgency in the CAPCOM´s voice as these people were instructed to maintain a consistent tone to avoid panic, even if there was a serious situation, as there was on Apollo 13. What was striking about the CAPCOMs people in Houston at the time was the monotone nature of their delivery, except when there was something to celebrate, as there was here latterly when Apollo 8 went into lunar orbit.
+97henrik041 True. Everything was nominal going into the LOS. I believe they had it down to the second on when it would start and stop. Really amazing stuff. :)
97henrik041 *Pretends to understand*
