It took about four months to design this route in my spare time. I used a combination of Google Maps, Caltopo, USGS topo scans, Satellite Imagery, Open Street Maps, Strava Heat Maps, and pieces of routes from bikepacking.com(Stagecoach 400 and Plateau Passage). I starting riding from San Diego but that section was a disaster... anything south of Hwy 94 was only for border patrol, anything north of Hwy 94 was private property. I hit three different dead ends, got interrogated by the border patrol, and then decided to just ride on Hwy 94 which was super busy. I'd recommend taking the bus to Cameron Corners and start there. I encountered snow a few times as well, usually above 9,000 feet elevation... bring proper footwear and gaiters if you plan on crossing these. My shoes leaked and it was almost like being barefoot. I marked out the water sources which seemed dependable, but it's always better to bring a little more than you need. I brought a 3 litre Platypus Big Zip and a 10 litre MSR Dromedary. The Dromedary works great as a pillow too ;) The most difficult section for food is from Yucca Valley to Lone Pine. It wasn't ideal stocking up at the i15 Gas Station on $110 worth of trail mix, dried fruit, jerky, and energy bars. The Ballarat store doesn't actually sell groceries, the owner gave me food from his own kitchen. The amount of climbing on this section is also brutal!
Fat bike? Plus bike? MTB? Road Bike??? There are sandy sections dispersed across the entire route. The Mojave Desert has the highest concentration of sandy roads and Utah not quite as much. Nevada was 95% MTB rideable. Conditions can change depending on when the last rain storm hit. I've heard a minimum of 3" tire width for the desert, but I've only tried 4.8". There were sections that I was riding at 3 psi to stay afloat. Most of the route is isolated, some places might only be visited a few times a year... being stranded would be stressful. I went tubeless with Maxxis Minions, FattyStrippers and Stan's Sealant which worked flawlessly. I carried two spare tubes but never needed them.
What brand are those panniers and frame bag? I made them! They are lightweight, durable, and designed to mount snug on the bike. The fabric is water resistant Cordura. I wouldn't say they're waterproof, but perfect for dry conditions in the desert.
Recorded with an LG V20 smartphone.

It's amazing how 47 minutes is so much better spent watching your video, compared to the same amount of TV programming (1 hour minus ads). The effort and personal sacrifice of time required to make something like this, by one man, blows my mind. I hope as many people appreciate it as possible.

I have watched this movie a few times over a few years and it always impresses me greatly. The film making, endurance, attitude, humor, etc, are all A1. The effort to cycle a loaded fat bike climb after climb, day after day, is not something just anyone could do. Awesome stuff.

Hi Foresty Moresty. Between work and overtime I've binged watched ~75%+of your videos. Imho, this is the best one, it is the core essence of your channel: raw simplicity, man vs nature, man vs himself, the will to keep going, the beauty in the tremendous struggle, the example of the .0001% of the top 1% looks like. Lately in your newest videos you've mentioned you are running out of plans ("cobbling together last minute" agendas) and don't really know what to do. I say go back to your roots, go back to the times (like this Western Renegade video) it sucked in the middle of nowhere with minimal daylight in harsh weather and pushing your bike and gear uphill for miles to go. You'll find your inspiration there. Peace and blessings my man! I wish you tremendous success and hope you never change as you become more world famous.

    • @swnorcraft7971

A part of me tends to agree with you.....If Foresty is looking for something to do, go back to his roots. Another part of me says: Foresty would hard pressed to top his epic fat biking trips in the western United States. Few, if any, have done anything close. He, single handed, filmed, edited, sound tracked and posted some of the most epic footage on You Tube. A guy gets a little older and reflects on his accomplishments and then............ On the other hand, he is young enough that the sky is still the limit........

Also impressive is what seemingly would take a considerable energy every time you run ahead to set up a camera up, or stages shot simply for you to pass by for the sake of making a good video. He might, but he also may suffer leg joint or other repetitive strain problems as he ages. His scenic photography is excellent, but I think he should include a few 10 or 20 second clips of supply restocking, doing laundry in a stream, and other neccessities. He makes it look too easy, but I guess that is why so many people worship him, kind of putting him in a "superhero" or "superhuman" status that they love to honor and worship.........

Maybe when he gets enough to retire comfortably, he'll go back to producing bike videos just for love of the art of video production. All I have to say is, this is amazing. Ok, a bit more. I'm hoping that in time and if my health conditions improve. I would love to take a bicycle ride across the TAT. Not, the typical well known Trans American Trail meant for bicyclist Route 76. There is another one that goes from North Carolina to Oregon and mainly 80 percent gravel and dirt roads normally used for 4 x 4's, and adventure motorcyclist. Also called the Trans American Trail. A few people on bicycles have tried it already. Just under 4,900 miles and about 340,000 of elevation gain. Roughly about 15 percent asphalt mainly in North Carolina at the beginning, then becomes dirt in the western mountains in North Carolina and Virginia. Anyway! This video definitely inspires.

In the USA, as long as you didn't blow anything on the alcohol meter, all you have to do to get away with murder is start sobbing on the witness stand, after you pull out the big hankie in your pocket with the onion concealed, wiping away the buckets of tears. You blurt out "I just didn't SEE HIM!...boo hoo hoo... Oh God..*I didn't see him..*" followed by more heavy breathing and sobbing uncontrollably as they lead you off the stand. You will not serve any jail time whatsoever in this country. "It was an accident." Same as juries convicting cops who shoot unarmed people here when they use the line, "I was afraid for my life." Juries let them off almost every time. It's not always that way in most other developed nations, especially for a cyclist hit from the rear or for cops who kill unarmed citizens.

Watching this for the second time. Best bike touring video on UA-cam or at least tied with the rest of his bike touring videos. The scene at 32:41 is especially amazing.
I have toured a lot on a bike and I am simply amazed at how lean your bike is in contrast with how much water and food you need to carry for the lack of services.

I bought a fat bike two months ago and next summer am returning to Alaska to bike across the state. Been bike touring 37 year and 250,000 miles in North America since 1982 when I was 26. I am 63 now, be 64 before my next Alaska tour! Love your videos!

I am back here again, June 11, 2024. It’s even better every time, like any great movie. You always spot more details. I love to Google lots of the places you showcase. It’s a “Foresty in Wonderland Rabbit Hole”.

An absolutely epic journey. You've convinced me fat bikes are the best go anywhere machine. Thank you for the efforts in camera placement and recovery. It almost makes me think of a drone recovery system. Cheers, 🍺

Carl Linveld you're so lucky to have that nearby! I couldn't believe those tunnels. It was worth the struggle of getting there. The only other possible road i can see is Skye Valley... But it is blocked off by the Camp Barrett Youth Corrections. It looks like it's gated off.
