I've learned a really major lesson from these stories: Who a person hangs out with reflects who they are. Even if they're nice and perfect to you, if you don't like their close friends or family members, don't date them. Who we hang out with is who we become. And sooner or later that nice mask will fall off and they show their true colors

It might make it more likely for someone to turn out toxic if their family is also toxic but that's not guaranteed. For example: a persons parents could be just the absolute worst kind of people (think: racist, sexist, homophobic, abusive, ect.) but their children (especially if they're taught by others not to be prejudiced like their parents) could end up nothing like their parents. They could even end up abused by their parents possibly even for not sharing their views making them innocent victims of their parents. So while I wouldn't blame someone for not dating someone because their family is toxic saying that the person they were dating is also toxic just because their family is isn't necessarily accurate. In this situation that was likely the case but not always.

Like I get it but at the same time, the other guy is dead, he's not coming back, it's irrational for OP to be this threatened by him. Anyway he tried to peer pressure her into seeing things his way by calling his family, her family and her ex's family. 2/3 disagreed with him and he lost that one hard. In fact they completely rejected the idea of him adopting her firstborn and changing his name like he wanted, and the idea of him putting his name on the new kid, because literally she did everything and she shouldn't have to have a different name from her kid and neither should her other kid just for the sake of his pride. Why he wouldn't just change his name is beyond me. I mean I know it's because he's a man and he feels entitled to his name and entitled to laying his claim on everything with it and so on but his arguments all just show how it's not her that won't compromise it's him really. Anyway when nobody agreed with him and even her friends started calling in and calling him out, they ended in a fight over the name where in the heat of the moment she snapped and said something about how she'd rather die than name the kid after him, so he called the police and told them she threatened to kill herself and gaslit her and lied and told them she had postpartum depression and institutionalised her. This is less than a week after she gave birth. She's still breastfeeding the baby. He went around behind her back to get her admitted in a psych hold on the deadline for the baby naming and went in and gave the baby whatever names he wanted (first, middle and last) and changed the locks. She sent her former in-laws to get the kids and he refused them entry. She sent her parents to get the kids and he sent them home with the oldest kid and refuses to let her see the youngest and claims she's a risk to her and now she has to express her milk and send it over because she's not even allowed to hold her newborn baby because of this asshole.

Actually, I can believe that. My water didn't broke but I was bleeding, I got scared so much I didn't dare to move and just screamed for my husband from the bathroom. A friend refused to move until the ambulance came so she just sit there with her water. We both had husband taking care of us, she was alone so I can imagine her slowly crawling to call for ambulance
Here is a lesson I have learned: Be transparent with your love ones (not necessarily family, but people you trust) about things that happens in your life, good or bad, so people can help you. My parent told me to keep our family business within the family, then when I FINALLY opened up about my life, I realized my life was MESSED UP. Don't keep it in, let people come help you!

In another story, the guy was mad she didn't want to give the baby his last name so he had her institutionalised and stole the baby from under her.
She had to send bottles of expressed milk because he wouldn't allow her access to the baby to even feed it.
And everyone was agreeing with him because of the rampant misogyny in the comments.
Basically she had an ex husband and a kid with him, and they had last name B. She wanted to name the baby with last name B so they would match but he refused. He insisted on his name (let's say C name) or to use C name and her maiden name (A) in like a hyphen situation but she refused cause she went by B name and so did her other kid so this kid wouldn't match anybody. He then expected her to change her name to hyphen A and C and wanted to adopt her other kid and give it the same hyphen erasing and replacing his dad.
Mind you the ex is dead, and she's a widow, right? Her ex isn't a deadbeat, he's dead. So it stings extra hard that he's trying to take his name off the first kid. And when they married she didn't change her name, and kept the old married name that matched her first kid so to change it now would alienate the firstborn.
And they couldn't agree on names either because she wanted the feminized version of her ex's name ideally as the first name to their child and he was jealous of a ghost. Like I get it but at the same time, the other guy is dead, he's not coming back, it's irrational for OP to be this threatened by him.
Anyway he tried to peer pressure her into seeing things his way by calling his family, her family and her ex's family. 2/3 disagreed with him and he lost that one hard. In fact they completely rejected the idea of him adopting her firstborn and changing his name like he wanted, and the idea of him putting his name on the new kid, because literally she did everything and she shouldn't have to have a different name from her kid and neither should her other kid just for the sake of his pride. Why he wouldn't just change his name is beyond me. I mean I know it's because he's a man and he feels entitled to his name and entitled to laying his claim on everything with it and so on but his arguments all just show how it's not her that won't compromise it's him really.
Anyway when nobody agreed with him and even her friends started calling in and calling him out, they ended in a fight over the name where in the heat of the moment she snapped and said something about how she'd rather die than name the kid after him, so he called the police and told them she threatened to kill herself and gaslit her and lied and told them she had postpartum depression and institutionalised her. This is less than a week after she gave birth.
She's still breastfeeding the baby. He went around behind her back to get her admitted in a psych hold on the deadline for the baby naming and went in and gave the baby whatever names he wanted (first, middle and last) and changed the locks. She sent her former in-laws to get the kids and he refused them entry. She sent her parents to get the kids and he sent them home with the oldest kid and refuses to let her see the youngest and claims she's a risk to her and now she has to express her milk and send it over because she's not even allowed to hold her newborn baby because of this asshole.

Her story is so relatable I was 34 weeks pregnant when my husband was hospitalized and my in-laws flew from my native country to us. My husband couldn’t make it and then it all started accusations after accusations they forgot that I could be expecting any time at one point I was so fed up that I prefer spending a day in ER than at home. Thankfully my parents were there with me and had good support from my friends. My in-laws SIL MIL and FIL made a hell for me. I understand they were grieving but they also forgot that I lost my husband and my child lost his father before he came into this world. This definitely hits hard

secondly, that poor girl sarah. she has such an eldest daughter syndrome at at age 5. i remember when i was 6 and my father had abandoned me and my mom and my chronically ill sister who was still in a baby carriage, to go to a football match. my sister was having a seizure and my mom was pushing up a hill to take her to the hospital (bastard had taken our car). she almost collapsed because she was trying to run while pushing a carriage up a steep hill. i pushed her and said “i’m here mommy let’s push together”. i can never forget her crying. that sarah won’t forget what she witnessed either.
