I am 71 and for the past 35 years have been living in a 6 bedroom converted mill, this is the sort of elegant downsizing I am dreaming of, minimal house, minimal garden, minimal upkeep. You must have incredible imagination and training to dream up something like this, so well designed and beautifull.
I'm an introvert with a tendency towards paranoia about windows and neighbours. I love this house. Apart from it's total privacy it's perfectly designed for relaxed easy living.
Given the stealth nature of this wonderful design, I am wondering if I would want some way to know what is outside my door before exiting. I think I would want a pretty empty street if possible, since it could be jarring for a pedestrian to just see you suddenly emerging from this black wall. (I am imagining this in a very urban context like my Chicago neighborhood, so maybe this is unnecessary in quieter places.) I think I’d add either a video cam by the inside of the door w a view of the street, or maybe a lower-tech version like a small sliding panel in the door… like you’d see in a speakeasy. :-)
For homes, I’m accustomed to having a lot of windows for cross-ventilation, enjoying the view, optical illusion… I was intrigued to hear in the beginning that there’s going to be no window in this one. What a daring and beautiful design!
A brilliant piece of land management. The UK government should employ you to create affordable housing in brown-field sites. There's millions of bf sites all over the UK just waiting for your undoubted talent. Bravo..! 🎉🎉🎉
This is the best tiny house layout for shared spaces, or ugly locations. I love it! It's simple elegant, cozy, private and practical it's honestly quite perfect.
This reminds me of homes I saw in busy parts of Mexico where everyone is crammed together so they basically wall in their tiny piece of property and the home is built in a u-shape around their garden space (courtyard). It’s ultimate privacy and security while living in the city. Love it!!
Hi Gemma, I live in Australia and I just stumbled upon this video of yours by happy accident. This space that you designed is brilliant and I can totally see how this would work in my backyard as a 'granny flat'. Aesthetically pleasing from inside and out, purposeful spaces and connected to nature, all while maintaining privacy for the occupants of both the main house and this tiny home. I have been trying for 2 years to figure out what would work in our backyard and you have designed it perfectly. All without meeting me or seeing my house and yard. ❤❤ Love it. Love it. Love it! ❤❤ Thankyou. I am off to watch all your other clips now. 👁👁 Great work!!
I can picture this, built from scratch, at the end of a garden. From the main house, it looks pretty much like a timber fence down at the end and they can use the main garden without intruding upon the little house resident's privacy. The little house resident has their own private garden as well as access to the main garden.
Another Aussie here, a town planner; I’ve just stumbled across your videos and I’m now binging them! 😅 Your designs are clever and aesthetically appealing and I love listening to you explain the design.
I love your concepts. My only issue with many of them is that the bed is against a wall. It's good for singles or young people, but I hate climbing over my wife or her over me for those mid night bathroom breaks.
And making the bed becomes difficult. I'm all for finding a solution with walk space around the bed if possible. But aside from that, such a lovely plan.
Too true. If there wasn’t enough space, I would sacrifice being able to open that glass wall back and have the bed spun 90 degrees. Would mean that both people could see the night sky, or the rain, as well.
If I didn't have a fiancée and already moving into a house, THIS is my jam. Damn lady, you got into my head and heart and found what I was looking for without me knowing what I was looking for 🎉🎉 many thanks, I can show said Mrs and say "I love this, let's do this when we are older" we are both introverted and 'energy efficient' people.
I wanted to come back here again really just to say that this is my absolute favourite video so far. I'm dreaming of something amazing as an addition (or standalone in my large backyard) to my current under 500 square foot home. The privacy and beauty aspects of this thing are just impeccable.
I think the only thing I’d change would be from the black exterior to a weathered gray, to blend in more with the existing buildings… or maybe even have a block and concrete exterior wall… LOVE your designs!!!
I’m an introvert and this would be perfect. Having a little courtyard gives you the nature you need, without having to share it with strangers. I would add a small pond/water feature for soothing water sounds and built in bookshelves on the dining/living walls. The best part would be sitting at night with the fire burning and reading a book with a glass of muscat. Love your work Gemma, your creative brain never fails to amaze me!
This is brilliantly beautiful and inventive. We need more of this kind of creativity in design if we are to embrace the fill in problems of development and the housing crisis in large cities. Love this!
@m.denonsens572 (watching 4 mo later) Perfect for countries like ours, with a smaller landmass. No coincidence that small Japan and Scandinavian countries are renowned for their well designed, compact dwellings. We could use a wealthy, philanthropist type here who could drive this type of thoughtful, innovative program of creating micro-dwellings up and down the country. A big plus is using land already zoned, not filling in our irreplaceable agricultural land. I'd foresee that, once the ball got rolling, Councils would be falling over themselves to find residential uses for their surplus lots.
I love the stealthy exterior which makes it impossible to guess what lies within. The privacy of the inner space really appeals. Then, beyond expectation, is this wonderfully minimalist, light filled interior. The contrast with the 'industrial' neighbourhood just enhances the beauty of the inner living space. I could happily live in a house like that, which says alot about me!😊
Beautiful clever design. I might add a waterfall or Fountain feature inside the courtyard to add to the Natural feel but also to filter out the street noise
I love this design. The Ancient Romans used indoor gardens and I think we should use them more. As you show here they are great for tiny houses but also for houses by railways or noisy roads.
I adore these projects where you design around existing constraints. I watched one video and instantly subscribed! I have not been disappointed. Your presentation style is soothing and the content is top-quality.
My daughter's ex was raised in Mexico. His family had a beautiful house built & i'm told most have interior courtyards. While visiting, she called me & alto she was sitting inside, all i could hear was birds singing. It sounded so peaceful.
Gemma, you just solved many architectural space issues that I have had for months. The little windowed garden in the center of the house is brilliant! John in Bethel, Missouri. USA
I keep returning to a house for sale which has a workshop and a double length double width garage at the bottom of the garden. It would not take too much work to convert one of them along these lines.
I think this house is perfect for Urban/Inter Urban living which can be chaotic at times. Have always wanted a house built around a private courtyard, (the way the Romans did), had never considered doing it in an Urban setting, or on this tiny scale. X:)
I am all for these kinds of creative ways to utilize largely unwanted or problem lots. The significant constraints bring about such elegant and creative solutions. Wonderful design ❤
I’ve watched all your videos I can find and now I’ve watched this one twice. They are all wonderful but there’s something particularly appealing in the total privacy of this one. Reading other comments, seems like it really appeals to us 70 year olds! Maybe an old lady commune of these tiny houses… :)
Gorgeous modern miniaturization of the traditional courtyard home designs of ancient cultures like China and Greece. ❤️ Such a functional layout. The simple materials are like a canvas for the resident to personalize with art and textiles. I’m swooning over that shower skylight!!
Just came across this channel randomly and it has been a pleasure. I've always been fascinated with how people define spaces. It made me consider things I wouldn't even thought of when planning out my own space.
I love how open it is internally yet totally private at the same time. Love to see you go through your designs and explain your thinking. Making something great out of something small is a great thing! 🙂
I absolutely love this little space. It's a great combination of inside and outside space, which, I personally believe, we all need. I could still grow my own food, as well as have a cosy escape from outside. Nature is not far from us all, so if I wanted it, I could just step outside and take a walk. I'm a 54 year young man, living in Zwolle, The Netherlands, living in a small apartment, close to the centre, but fortunately with a huge balcony. A fantastic space for outside living, growing fruit and vegetables, relaxing. (I think you'd like it and could do wonders 😊). Thank you for sharing this. It's beautiful 😍
Absolutely beautiful… love the small courtyard, i wish more construction projects will apply this idea of internal courtyards, best way to have outdoor space with maximum privacy ❤
I could live in a cosy, beautiful space like this. The internal glazed courtyard concept is genius and I can imagine it would work well in a bigger house too. It’s amazing that a side-windowless house feels so open and inviting. As ever the materials are so tasteful. One of my favourite videos of yours. Looking forward to more.
I live in a typical Victorian terrace with a back yard that has a shed at the bottom. What visitors don’t realise is the shed also has a side door towards my neighbour, that leads to steps, that takes you to an enclosed south facing garden. It’s about the same size as my living room, and you can’t see it from the house, or a neighbours house, but it is part of the property, and an ideal hideaway.
This is almost perfect. The only thing I would add is a screen over the courtyard as I am in an area that suffers from mosquitoes as soon as the sun lowers in the evening. This is just beautiful. I love it so much!
I absolutely agree with so many other watchers: you have a wonderfully distinctive, relevant, helpful, beautiful way of achieving designs that are accessible, make sense, and are at once enticingly creative and elegantly minimalist. Gratitude 🙏
In southern Arizona, I'd go with a light tan stucco exterior: heat-reflecting! In northern Montana, I'd need a very sloped roof to direct the melting snow safely off the roof and I'd need to modify the atrium area but it would still work
If it was a slightly iffy area I think industrial metal cladding might be better for the street side, safer & more secure, but other than that I think it would be amazing..
I think you are brilliant!! I started subscribing to Architectural Digest in the 80's and after some decades I had to stop. I can't even watch their UA-cam content. Just left that to come here and enjoy real design and creativity done with consideration and sense of style.

Hi Gemma! 🙋🏻♀️✨🇺🇲 N California This is a lovely design! I'm a Tiny House fan living in an apartment. I'm also a fan of sunlight in a home. I'd love to see a version of this type of structure with a heat pump, and/or solar panels. I think that's the better way to power and heat spaces these days.
Hi Gemma, I love the idea of urban tiny houses but they always seem to lack privacy and outdoor space. Your design is AMAZING! I have watched and rewatched this so many times and it's such a great template to add small changes to make it your own. Now to find me a plot of land in Central London......
Love your unique solutions, this one especially, all the rooms with a view to the atrium, efficient use of space. I imagine a bird's nest in that tree.
Another introvert here who loves this design. My only concern would be location...where I live I would have to worry about snow piling up in the courtyard. But in the right climate, it is absolute perfection!❤
Bravo... you have been able to work out n' a perfect custom made solution not only yourself, but for many others as well... and achieve it too...❗ So, a double thums up for you...❗👍👍
Hi Gemma, I have seen a few of your designs now and love your use of space and light. In this particular design I would have a toughened laminated glass roof over the courtyard so the home is completely enclosed just in case anyone tried to chuck any rubbish over the fencing. You have asked about other project ideas, one thing I haven't seen from you yet is anything that is wheelchair accessible - is this something you would be interested it looking at? You would need completely flat access both internally and from the street so your pocket door work really well with this already but room sizes will need to be quite large to accommodate both furniture and the ability for the wheelchair to enter the room, access all areas and turn around to leave, it would also have to have at least the main bedroom and bathroom on the ground-floor even if guest bedrooms and bathroom are upstairs
Very creative. I like your solution for so much natural light into such a small space, and the mini garden is genius. I would have this built ... if I had the money.
Watching your new home project, I call it : My Dream House, as well as I did on previous your house idias Thank you for being inspired by your creative gift and videos! And we crave for more.. USA ❤😮
Hello Gemma, another Aussie here. I love the logic of your design in this tiny house. Imagine, if you will, the courtyard flooring floating over a mini-me plunge pool (or large bath - bubbles anyone?), so private but with a brilliant Milky Way view. Perfecto!
If I made one change to this it would be to give some sort of access to the roof and make the exterior "taller" for a little privacy up there, maybe add some plants seating and a little firepit or something, i dunno. Really amazing job.
What an incredible courage and imagination you have to start out with: this house will have no outside windows. And you’ve designed something incredibly beautiful. I love it how you make the outside space an important, even essential part of the building and the way one would live in it. This design is an eye-opener for me. Thank you for sharing your vision and ideas!
Love it. I’m happy with my flat, but your design would suit me perfectly as well. Great use of space and light, and all the privacy one might wish for 😊

Oh yes! I’m 75, would love a cute little place like this - it’s beautiful!
Sounds lovely
I'm an introvert with a tendency towards paranoia about windows and neighbours. I love this house. Apart from it's total privacy it's perfectly designed for relaxed easy living.
The house has a nice cocoon feel.
Yep this little home is perfect for us introverts!
Hear! Hear! :)

Like a tiny Roman house looking into the courtyard. Lovely!
This is beautiful Gemma! I'd definitely live here. Love the ways you let the light in throughout without sacrificing privacy. :)
I am all for these kinds of creative ways to utilize largely unwanted or problem lots. The significant constraints bring about such elegant and creative solutions.
Wonderful design ❤
I could so live in this little gem. I love sitting outdoors. I always feel I want to push the walls out!
Love this series of tiny house designs. You should do loads more. You are very talented.
I love this one. Especially the closet above the laundry.

So cozy and safe! Just beautiful. I love that you can see the sky from almost every angle!
This is so beautiful and thoughtful! I love a more classic architecture, but I'm entirely swayed!
Gorgeous modern miniaturization of the traditional courtyard home designs of ancient cultures like China and Greece. ❤️ Such a functional layout. The simple materials are like a canvas for the resident to personalize with art and textiles. I’m swooning over that shower skylight!!

Love❤it! Very ingenious plan. Even with "no windows" per se, with all the light feom the courtyard, you certainly don't lack for natural light. ❤❤❤
a brilliant architectural designer sharing some of the best design concepts out there
In southern Arizona, I'd go with a light tan stucco exterior: heat-reflecting! In northern Montana, I'd need a very sloped roof to direct the melting snow safely off the roof and I'd need to modify the atrium area but it would still work
Marvellous. This is the best Tiny House I’ve seen and I’ve seen a lot ! ❤
I think I just found my forever home, I am in love.
If it was a slightly iffy area I think industrial metal cladding might be better for the street side, safer & more secure, but other than that I think it would be amazing..
Love the idea of sliding back the doors and having inside / outside living.

Hi Gemma,
This house is fantastic. I really love your approach and the results reflect this. It would be really interesting for you to include a rough cost estimate , and break it down to include land/materials/labour. I guess that might be a ton of work, but even a rough estimate would be interesting.

What a magnificent retreat in the middle of things! It's small, but has everything necessary, including privacy and views.
Hi Gemma! 🙋🏻♀️✨🇺🇲 N California
This is a lovely design! I'm a Tiny House fan living in an apartment.
I'm also a fan of sunlight in a home. Maybe som celestory windows on the front & rear of the house.
🔸I would want the entry walk covered for comfort. I love the idea of the garden and it being open to the sky.
🔸You would need to build with allowance for drainage of rainwater in a way that protects the garden, house and property from water damage.
🔸Covered deck area with options for completely enclosed or partially enclosed walls. Could do a garden wall or lattice work covering windows and doors for privacy & some climbing vines.
🔸Pet viewing portals - could be celestory for cats with shelves and climbing access.
Jaw dropping! What a design and clever use of space. The future of urban planning and housing. Thank you for sharing.
This is one of the best tiny house designs I have seen.
I'd love to see a version of this type of structure with a heat pump, and/or solar panels. I think that's the better way to power and heat spaces these days.
I love this. Opens up a world of possibilities.
i love architecture...id never go back to school for it but i do love studying it and getting ideas from it

This might be my very favorite tiny house! Brilliant design.

Very creative. I like your solution for so much natural light into such a small space, and the mini garden is genius. I would have this built ... if I had the money.

Thank you for being inspired by your creative gift and videos!
And we crave for more..
USA ❤😮
I love this. An oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the street and city and yet there's greenery and natural light.
Very impressive and original! Bravo for coming up with this concept, love the patio with plants under open sky idea. Extremely cozy place, love it! 👌
Hello Gemma, another Aussie here. I love the logic of your design in this tiny house. Imagine, if you will, the courtyard flooring floating over a mini-me plunge pool (or large bath - bubbles anyone?), so private but with a brilliant Milky Way view. Perfecto!
Absolutely love this design, it could be in a family members backyard, in a field, in the middle of the woods, even in a city. Simply beautiful.
If I made one change to this it would be to give some sort of access to the roof and make the exterior "taller" for a little privacy up there, maybe add some plants seating and a little firepit or something, i dunno. Really amazing job.
Sounds great!
Great use of space and light, and all the privacy one might wish for 😊
I am so impressed with your creativity Gemma. You have a real talent that is inspiring. Thank you for sharing.
I love your indoor garden idea, I think it allows for the owner to escape into a small piece of nature. An expat watching in S Florida.
Another unbelievable vision for totally otherwise useless place! Wow! You’ve got an amazing talent! Thank you for sharing it with us ❤️
