Buddy rich.. He wouldn't of had a hope in hell trying to play this stuff, was too big band and although tight he didn't have a particularly deep pocket or any funk. Where as elvin jones, roy haynes, tony williams etc Would of been able to do something similar.. I'm just venting.. Bud was overrated!
Don't sell BR short and don't be so short sighted yourself. Buddy could fit into any context and lift the music. Why do you feel it necessary to say so and so could not "Play this stuff." Do you think Marcus could drive a big band with Buddy's presicion, time and creativeness? Do you think Marcus could bring big band drumming excitement to the stage like Buddy? Think before you text, man.
@Ray Lombardo yes i think if he wanted to learn that type of thing he he could hold that shit down just fine, but perhaps not be the 'showman' that that crowd are looking for.. But bud doing marcus type shit? Come on.. Anyway i'm not here to argue, just left my opinion, one that i've been stewing on for years after much listening and watching. Anyway, didn't mean to strike a nerve, peace.

@Ray Lombardo no i'll check it out.. but i have seen the legendary caravan solo with papa jo jones.. He's havin it off! He was brilliant.. Buddy used to tell his students to listen to pa jo..
Wrong. Buddy could play anything. For example, he blew away any living drummer on Birdland. He absorbed Cobham's 1 & funk beat like it was nothing. And if you look for the video here, you will find that one day Buddy just decided to play a drunk-style, broken figure solo just like what you are hearing above, in a high school gym, only with more power and chops than what you are hearing above.
Idk what the uck he’s doing and definitely not my style . BD definitely needs more ring at least in this recording. He’s sorta Art and Philly with some Tony. Seems like his playing is not fluid . He’s definitely got his own style and it’s really good but…
Though I like Marcus, this was not one of his better solos. Continuity of an idea would have been better than flurries every few seconds. I heard more licks than a solo. Sorry, after 50 years of playing I know what I like.
This dude sounds like the past and future combined🍁🌬🌌
absolutely
couldn't agree more ...
The present

Well said 🎼🎶🥁
Drums are, of all instruments, the ones that constantly surpass themselves. Mainly through drummers like this one. What a joy to see and hear.
Truly some of the best drumming I’ve ever heard and I’m a polar bear
Unexpected but effective comment
And that’s better than a “regular bear”.
lend me a coke thanks
If you're a polar bear, you haven't heard much drumming so your opinion doesn't have much of a basis. Who cares?

Is that a new Gretsch kit he’s playing or a vintage kit?

There is no one like him, he is on a different level altogether.
Him and Bill Stewart.
This is what brilliance sounds like on the drums
Unreal bebop drumming, and those cymbals blend just perfectly. This cat has got to be from another planet.

Awesome kick sound
What a truly wonderful player! i have been hoping that someone of this quality would come on the scene, and here he is!

Insanely wonderful!
so nice old school sound of these gretsch !!!!
Miloš Rais it comes from Marcus though
I think he's listened to ...and loves Roy Haynes. Beautiful drumming.
Roy Haynes is his grandfather!
Wow! I noticed his ride pattern and the way he sits at the drums. Very cool.
I think he's listened to everyone.

Ha ha, good years!!!
Obviously, this was fucking epic
The future here today...and on the cover of MOdern DRummer..

Of course…Roy Haynes nephew!!!

Amazing
Despite of an authodox jazz peformance, Marcus gilmore's solo as well as backing is amazing.
Incredible.
Really awesome solo
The camera angle makes it look like he’s floating.

Chick said Bernie Kirsh was recording all week, so a CD release may be forthcoming.
To me, Marcus is a combination of Brian Blade + Eric Harland. I was never able to put my finger on it until now.

fuuuck, look at that ride technique
Reminds me of Roy Haynes ca 1968
Hmmm!!!…I wonder why that is???
What are the cymbals? I'm guessing some type of K con.

could someone please tell what cymbals he uses here

Great! Technically superfluous, but sweat and emotions are not a bad thing either. Extensions of Ralph Peterson Jr, Tain, and Roy Haynes.
And he's the grandson of Roy Haynes so not surprising about that influence. Seen him play live in a few different contexts and he is always great
Roy Haynes style
beaut
Anyone know what ride that is?
It's a 22" custom flat ride that was hammered according to Marcus' instructions by Paul Francis of Zildjian.
I'm thinking they're all round ones. LOL This is mesmerizing drumming. Fantastic!!
The left side crash is a Zildjian prototype hammered for Marcus by Paul Francis.
💯🔥
Roy Haynes is his uncle.
