I love watching these types of videos where you actually have someone who's passionate about the genre they teach. Surf rock is one of those uncommon genres these days I'm trying to get into and most videos I've seen people do the stereotypical and stale version of just hitting the same 2 notes over and over without real consideration for the genre as a whole because they aren't into it. Enjoyed this video and learnt quite a bit
There's a pedal called the "Loomer" by Keeley Electronics. It's a fuzz-reverb stompbox, but it hass this reverse reverb with an adjustable pitch bend mod, where the reverse reverb starts low and bends up into the note, which sounds pretty similar to that dip you were doing with the vibe bar.
Oddly enough, surf rock had pretty much died out by the 70s. Most of the classic surf tunes were pre-Beatles. Quinton Tarantino helped bring it back in movies like Pulp Fiction.
Great stuff, and pretty basic too. More than enough for an intro lesson. Thank's for that classic riff at the end. That'll be a fun one to practice w/out the onset of frustration and depression of trying to achieve new heights on the guitar.
Sometimes you can talk about playing a surf tune or 2??? LoL! Sounds about like me trying to get folk to play Ramones- Punk Rock here in Mississippi. @@onechewtreefaw818 Great tip, I gave them a listen and really enjoyed it, but didn't sound like The One. But who knows, misremembering happens all the time.

Oh, the spring reverb must have been what The Ventures used in Diamond Head, I think? As well as a few other of their tunes. Always wondered what sort of effect that was, thanks for the info. I bought my first electric guitar recently. A Yamaha Pacifica strat copy, specifically to have a whammy bar and play surf rock. (A Jazzmaster or Mustang was out of my price range). I find substituting certain notes with quick hammer-ons and pull-offs can enhance the surfiness of the sound and sound much more exciting. That's my tip.
Congrats on the new guitar. Yes, I'm certain The Ventures used spring reverb tank on Diamond Head. Both hammer ons and pull offs are important techniques to know!
Oddly enough, I don't do that particularly well. This biggest problem I have is keeping each stroke consistent. Probably need to work on that! The best thing to do is start slow, and get each stroke consistent, then work on playing it faster. Make sense?
To do this it is easiest to mute with your left hand instead of palm muting with your right. Left hand muting is more common practice in bass playing but to do this, fret the note with your index and allow your other fingers to gently rest on the string. This mutes the note and frees up your right hand to focus on tremolo picking. For the octave slide effect you can just start on the 12th fret and slide down to open. You can also fret and strum through both the E and B strings for a chord slide.
Not that I remember, although it was set to something fairly clean. The J Mascis has more mids than a regular Jazzmaster, so I most likely backed those off a bit.
