There's a pedal called the "Loomer" by Keeley Electronics. It's a fuzz-reverb stompbox, but it hass this reverse reverb with an adjustable pitch bend mod, where the reverse reverb starts low and bends up into the note, which sounds pretty similar to that dip you were doing with the vibe bar.
Great tips.....I built a Fender 6G15 stand-alone reverb unit...sounds great. Used a 6K6 instead of the 6V6...use it with my 5F2A build....both sound great together !
Great stuff, and pretty basic too. More than enough for an intro lesson. Thank's for that classic riff at the end. That'll be a fun one to practice w/out the onset of frustration and depression of trying to achieve new heights on the guitar.
Great tips on the Surf Guitar sound, David Thank you! Also love your guitar. (I have a Squier CVJM.) I especially liked the Beach Boys lick at the end. (Although as a beginner I had the dickens of a time figuring out the tabs- thank goodness for super slo-mo.)
I just bought a Mustang type guitar that has the switches like the jaguar or jazz master guitars, and the same type of tremelo. This video helped! I bought the guitar to help with achieving that surf sound, and it works real well for that. This tutorial helped add more to what I was already getting and it sounds great! Thank you for the tips!!
Thanks for sharing this great stuff. I’ve been playing surf guitar over 40 years. I currently use Squier Mustang guitar with Fender Deluxe Reverb amp. The internal spring reverb does a great job but lacks a good “drip” sound. However, the audience can’t tell the difference! Rock on! 😎🎼🎸🎶🌊🏄🏼
Totally. Just like when i make a mistake on stage. And in my mind it is catastrophic. The audience never knew the difference. Best to laugh it off in the moment and keep rockin!
@@datsunlambchops4624 man, I just talked with a local guitarist after his set the other day. He put on a good show and everyone was happy, but he was hung up about his amps humming. Guess he normally plays a LP with humbuckers, but he was on a single coil stratocaster that day, and he said all he could hear was the buzz from the amp. Nobody in the audience heard it, I didn't hear it. Maybe it was there, maybe it wasn't. But on-stage "catastrophes" for us, usually don't even get noticed by the audience... Who are the reason we are there.
Sometimes you can talk about playing a surf tune or 2??? LoL! Sounds about like me trying to get folk to play Ramones- Punk Rock here in Mississippi. Love Surf Rock too and I plan to get a Jazzaster soon as possible to go with my Fender Twin, Tremelo, Boss Reverb 60 something, Delay- Slapbback. Love your Jazzmaster
I have one. Put a bone nut , Lollar blade master in the neck , Duncan antiquity 1 in the bridge , custom shop wiring and switches and it’s so heavenly !!!
Oddly enough, surf rock had pretty much died out by the 70s. Most of the classic surf tunes were pre-Beatles. Quinton Tarantino helped bring it back in movies like Pulp Fiction.
Hey, outstanding! I traded in my Strat and two modeling Amps was ready to quit, then my Guitar dealer asked me to try the Mini Jazzmaster for my sore old hands. Well, it was cute and seemed easier so I took it on loan, but he is getting a Classic Vibe in soon i want to try it. I keep my Boutique Amp and two pedals just in case. I then came across you series of videos. WOW!,, That is what i want to do play that Jab like the old days. Gotta get me that Oceans 11, it is so awesome. I need to finish this video and write down the gear you used. Really like the look of that special Guitar but it may be out of my budget. Thank You so much, D
Dennis Murphey Glad this inspired you! The JM Jazzmaster is in the same price range as the CV. Both are good - check out my comparison video. There are so many good reverb pedals out there too. Oceans 11 just happens to have a lot of options and flexibility compared to other “spring” reverb pedals.
Thanks for an interesting video. I'm a seniorplayer, just starting up playing that wonderful surfsound I remember from my childhood. Nice to see what gear you're using, and thanks for the information about the surf "drip" - I didn't knew you only can make the real "drip" with the spring reverb and not the hall/plate. I'm into buying me a reverb pedal, so that was real good info. Cheers from Denmark, Mogens.
Glad you found the video helpful. There is way to get a drip sound using hall or plate - you just need to add a little delay. It almost sounds like the real deal. That said, there are quiet a few pedals out there that imitate spring reverb, beside the Oceans 11 (which I use all the time).
Oh, the spring reverb must have been what The Ventures used in Diamond Head, I think? As well as a few other of their tunes. Always wondered what sort of effect that was, thanks for the info. I bought my first electric guitar recently. A Yamaha Pacifica strat copy, specifically to have a whammy bar and play surf rock. (A Jazzmaster or Mustang was out of my price range). I find substituting certain notes with quick hammer-ons and pull-offs can enhance the surfiness of the sound and sound much more exciting. That's my tip.
Congrats on the new guitar. Yes, I'm certain The Ventures used spring reverb tank on Diamond Head. Both hammer ons and pull offs are important techniques to know!
@@anotherheadlessdemo Certainly is Awesome Surf playing ! I'll just have to watch the video in slo-mo until I get the fingering. Tried the set up using a 1992 Peavey EVH 5150 Amp Stack...buy the little Fender X2 was more friendly.
@@anotherheadlessdemo you actually just helped me write out a quick demo with just this video and I had no idea about the spring reverb and that really helped refine my tone!
Oddly enough, I don't do that particularly well. This biggest problem I have is keeping each stroke consistent. Probably need to work on that! The best thing to do is start slow, and get each stroke consistent, then work on playing it faster. Make sense?
To do this it is easiest to mute with your left hand instead of palm muting with your right. Left hand muting is more common practice in bass playing but to do this, fret the note with your index and allow your other fingers to gently rest on the string. This mutes the note and frees up your right hand to focus on tremolo picking. For the octave slide effect you can just start on the 12th fret and slide down to open. You can also fret and strum through both the E and B strings for a chord slide.
Awesome. Love the J Mascis Jazzmaster, would have loved to get it but I got a classic vibe Jaguar instead for my first guitar. Had to be aware of the money :( but if I ever get rich this is the guitar I'm getting
