The mob votes feel less like choose something cool and more like choose two things to never have
this is what the mob vote always felt to me. They show us 3 cool things, we get 1 and the other 2 are thrown in the trash never to be seen again. it always felt to me like we actually got less than what we lost. I understand they are just showing us early concepts, but thats just how it feels to me. it would AT LEAST be more balanced if we voted between only 2 options, that way we dont ''lose'' more than what we gain...

Penguins definitely ended up being the “rascal” or “glare” of this years mob vote. Poor thing is very cool, adorable and unique- same as the glare. But the little guy just doesn’t have a good feature to back it.

Penguin is like dolphin for boats, but you need to go NEAR a stony shore to find penguins, instead of just the entire ocean.
At least the rascal had a use. God.
Think about it on the long term : since penguins are much more ambient that the other ones people won't get too bored of seeing them, like foxes and pandas with almost no uses but are great to make the game more alive. And think about all the cool boat racing/boat highway tricks you may be able to do
Everyone scoffs at seeing a polar bear, turtles and llamas, Mojang should at least be providing a "reason" for that mob exist, either as food or providing something that could change gameplay, providing then a reward for having travelled into new biomes
Armadillos are the most useful. Boat tricks are kinda unnecessary

The penguin feels like a personal middle finger since we've been asking for them since we got polar bears and they gave them by far the worst addition.

To me, the difference between a mob vote and biome vote is that mobs for a mob vote feel like they have been deliberately made to go in the vote, whereas biome votes feel more natural with a feeling that first there were many content ideas and then it needed to be narrowed down to be able to actually make it on time.

It's probably harder to code proper mob behaviour than biome generation considering how little does the block placement actually matter when a chunk is loaded. It's still lazy and annoying of them to present 3 already thought out mobs and say they only have time to make 1.
@@Coraloner I agree, especially considering the fact that thinking and designing a mob is the only thing that takes more time for mojang than it does for modders, at least that is the only argument ive seen, and if they're already thought out and designed then at that point just add all 3. If they want a mob vote that wont cause a revolution then make us vote on decorative mobs that people wont be sad if they dont make it into the game

And if we already mentioned moders, the fact 3 mobs can be suggested and within 6 to 12 hours there's at least 20 different mods that have one or all 3 mobs and their addons made by the community just shows how little effort is required by mojang. They could make it so the mob vote is about which mob gets EXTRA features rather than which ones get scrapped forever.

It has been confirmed via Minecraft China that the crabs will be breedable with kelp and the crab claw will extend block placing and breaking.
It's not even like the penguin would be a bad addition to the game, it's just that it's competitors completely overshadow it in the one chance it had in being added, maybe in past mob votes it would've won but it simply stands no chance now. Rip 🐧

I'm kindof surprised that the penguin is so unwanted considering that boats are uswd pretty frequently for villager transport and nether highways, I feel like improving those would be much more useful than smth like dog armor.
Also there's a good chance you could do the dolphin's grace superfast travel trick but with boats which is a plus.
tbh if the crab claw gets added to the game theres probably going to be an attribute that increases reach distance
also the claw is good for puzzle maps, imagine you have to place a block somewhere but cant reach, you would have to get the claw first, somewhere, wherever it is
or maybe there could be a map where you have infinite reach distance but its limited somehow (maybe like only if you have the crab claw on is when you get infinite reach distance, but then there would be some kind of punishment for having it on, such as blindness)
if it does increase reach, then it could help in pvp, and mining as well.

Although it’s features are silly, something that caught my eye that may or may not be fiction for the plot is the use of what we consider a literal boat. We may actually get the dream of having large ships if we go for the penguin.
if the penguin boat speed buff worked for boats on ice, imagine how efficient boat + ice + nether roof travel would be if penguins were added into the mix

I all but guarantee it won't have an effect. Literally every time people have speculated about potential extra utility of mob vote mobs, they've been completely wrong. It always ends up being *exactly* what they describe, no more, in the most boring way possible.
The crab claw will increase reach by like 1 block and have zero interesting synergies. The armadillo armor will be annoying to obtain, barely increase survivability at all, won't allow enchantments, and will have zero interesting synergies. The penguin speed boost will be in water only and the activation conditions will be unreliable as well as mild enough to the point where the only way to even tell that you have it will be the effect symbol in the corner, and will have zero interesting synergies.
I guarantee all three mobs will end up being almost purely decorative at absolute best, and they will act like it took *so* much work to do and they couldn't possibly have added all three, and also they'd love it if we all could maybe buy more minecoin to support this small indie dev
I have a hunch that even if dog armor becomes available in the game, most players will still opt to leave their dogs at home. This is because the dog's AI tends to find itself in precarious situations.
Yeah, and it's just tedious to use them even if they were immune to damage. They won't follow you unless you walk on land. Use an elytra or a boat and they will lag behind (or you can take a max of 1 dog in the boat). A sword, bow, axe etc does the job just fine.

This is probably the most aggravating mob vote so far because it just kinda feels like everything here is something that should be in the game already or something. I'm not even talking about the mobs themselves, I mean the mechanics surrounding them. Ultimately the three mobs end up being less about the mob itself and more about the thing you wish was changed/made better. Here's what I mean, you can choose from:
-Extended reach for breaking and placing blocks. This would probably end up being an Ender Chest item that is really helpful especially for builders.
-Doing *anything* for wolves ever. I swear they haven't updated wolves in 700 years.
-Faster transporation... Which the Elytra already does but 10x better... I think that's the biggest problem. Minecraft's forms of transport are all basically terrible except for the Elytra. The boat is already the second best in the game! Minecarts are too expensive to build too much of, and horses are basically only used because people like horses. (I think keeping horses is cool, but it feels too easy to potentially lose a horse if you actually use it to go explore. It's better to use them to go between from two close bases).
I think this mob vote kinda summarizes the issue I've had with more recent Minecraft updates, and why Caves and Cliffs was so good. Caves and Cliffs was an update that actually tried to fix an issue people had with the game (exploring caves was boring) so they tried to fix it. It kinda feels like every update after that either felt tone-deaf (whatever happened with sculk sensors) or didn't really add anything to the game (mangrove swamps). I'm not saying every update has to be something astounding every single time, but I still think things like raids, wolves, the End, quicker modes of transportation, etc. need to actually be looked at more, instead of adding something to the game that barely changes how the game is played.

Horse is good because boats are for water and Elytra are an super end game item you'll literally won't get until you've done most things in the game before.
As a builder I don't understand why anyone thinks the crab is useful 1:46 got it right litterally why can't I move one block forward and if it takes up the off hand slot that's actually a downgrade for builders since we can't hold 2 types of blocks to switch easily in our off hand
I seriously agree. the best land transportation is the horse, which is pretty good if you know the breeding strat, but you can't ride it in water. the best sky transportation is the elytra, which you get at the end of the game. the best water transportation is the boat, which is pretty slow compared to the others. penguins are not only cute, but also, they are handy for those who spawned into a world that is just a bunch of islands. a block reach of +1 isn't that handy, and wolf armor probably won't make you bring your wolves out more often.
If the Mob Vote was "Vote for the mob to be added *first* between all three!" instead of only adding one and banishing the other ones to the Shadow Realm, people would enjoy the Mob Vote more.
I will never forget that Vu once said that maybe the Moobloom and other Mob Vote mobs could see the light of day. So, I hope we get an update that adds all the unvoted mobs or something alike.
Besides, the Mob Vote has been proven scientifically to be poisonous to players, so I have no idea why they keep going with it...

I've seen a lot of people say things like "adding 3 mobs would take a lot of time and be really hard for Mojang"
During the last mob vote modders created the mobs before the mob vote was even finished. They were fully functional and the Sniffer looked exactly like the official one.
When they have us vote for a biome, the other two biomes still get added, just much later down the road. When we have to vote for a mob it's like we have to pick two things to never have in the game.

I really hope the penguin can sit in the boat to make it go faster. If that's the case, then it's the best mob. If it's just like dolphin's grace, it's the most useless mob since the biome it spawns in is pretty rare, which would break my heart since the penguin is the #1 mob I want added in Minecraft.

i actually liked the biome votes, because even though they still havent added some previous losers, youre not dividing the community based on how they play the game, youre instead providing something for everyone in each biome and then people choose on what they think is the coolest/most in need of an update.

I think that the vote should be for the one they are gonna fully code first. That way the community still gets a choice on which gets added first, but we don’t miss out on anything.

Future mob votes should be between 4 or 5 mobs with 2 being added and everyone getting a 3, 2, and 1 weighted vote. So they can vote for what they most want, with the 3, but also what they would also like to see added with the 2 and 1.
Then for fun, they can have statistics at the end showing how many 3 weight, 2 weight, and 1 weight votes each mob got on top of the total vote count for each mob.
I like this. Would definitely be better than the current vote system.

that's genuinely just never happening. it's too unrealistic for a sandbox game where they've had the same vehicles for over a decade
@duckified. There's an addon for the create mod coming out later this year that will have physics for boats, airships and submarines with a really vanilla feel and very few bugs.
It's because Minecraft just straight up isn't a good game. They've dropped so many fake things on it but truthfully, there's so many better games for what it offers. Want a sandbox? There's plenty. Combat? Plenty there, too. And if you're some sort of psychopath who only enjoys building complex machines (me), there's other games as well. Minecraft is, frankly, just not great. Sluggish updates, and marketing that depicts things the game doesn't even have...1.16 is the definitive version of this game before it hit the bin.

While I'd love to have the penguin as a cute mob, the crab does have a (maybe) slightly useful feature, and it's partly blue. Let's face it, if it has blue on it, it's going to win.

I mean, idk. I don’t think that they get forgotten, it’s just that buzz dies down because they’re just a normal part of the game now. I’m always delighted to find an allay in a world and I’m still seeing them used in farms, and honestly I kinda love the ambiance glow squids bring to underwater caves and how readable signs are now.

imo the reason everyone says that is because the only returning mob that lost a vote was the frog, and it seemingly only returned because Mojang specifically said that the biome vote losers would be added eventually.
If they leave things as is, the majority always defaults to voting for the most useful looking one without looking at any other aspects of the mobs, because there's seemingly only one chance, and also due to other "bad" votes where we "lost" good mobs "forever". People want to strive for perfection even though mob vote mobs are meant to be nice little side features.
Adding one or multiple losing mob vote mobs this year would make it instantly clear that the losers aren't gone forever, so people wouldn't be as uptight about voting for the perfect mob no matter the cost.
Also: yes, modders can add all 3 mobs by themselves because it's not hard to add something to the game as a mod; the difficulty of adding something to the base game is it has to:
- act the same way across all versions of Minecraft
- be designed to feel "vanilla"
- be designed in general (behaviour, graphics, animation, audio)
- go through the snapshot process for community feedback
- have as few bugs as possible in a game where thousands of things can interact with each other
- be something that the community (worldwide) wants or is indifferent to
So it's easier said than done. And again, I bet the devs would rather get to work on doing all of that for 1 mob and the rest of the update instead of 3 mobs and part of the rest of the update.

The sniffer is ultimately useless as a mob, meaning there's literally no reason to go out of your way to "obtain" it, which is why imo the sniffer was a failure of a mob vote victor

I feel like it would be good to add all 3 so we could get more unique mobs for the different biomes, so theres something more than pigs, sheep, or cows in some areas
Let’s make a ties for all three!!! Then they will need to add all 3 because it will be only fair to add all of them after community decided for a tie.

Building in Terraria with building accessories has teached me how good it feels to have increased building range
I think dog armour is my fav feature and might make me take a dog around more, I just love crabs too much
the dogs deserve an update, the only updates they've had, not including bug fixes or AI improvements, since being added in 2011 are:
1. Pups added
2. More options to feed them
3. Dyeable collars
4. Texture slightly changed in 1.14
And for some more context, the first 3 all occurred between 2011 and 2012
While the dogs are certainly still fine as they are, the thing I'm most upset with is the fact that the cat has 11 different types, the parrot has 5, and the horse has 35, while the dogs despite having some of the most variation in the real world has some of the least variation in the game for tameable animals

Maybe voting for armidillo will call attention to this and wolves will finally get an update

Honestly, I feel like the penguin would have some use if you could put it *in* the boat. I feel like that would likely not be the case, but if you could use the penguin like some sort of engine, it could actually be quite useful for increasing ice highway speeds.

it really engages the community its a marketing strategy, if they just added all the community wouldnt vote and there would be less reasons to watch the live til the end
@@blockymaster they're breaking up the community causing hate and anger, other mobs have no chance to be ever added, players could later regret voting for them (as was the case with the phantom and sniffer), people have had enough of being able to choose only one mob (which kills the fanbase, one mob a year is way not enough to keep up the hype, especially with the recent few lackluster and questionable updates) and popular youtubers often have the power to influence the outcome, it's like presidential elections but on a smaller scale
if it's their marketing strategy, guess they're aiming at hurting the game and making the players hate each other, and there'd be actual reasons to watch the live if they finally gave us something worth the hype, and not a chunk of something they planned years ago but broken into 10 parts for 10 years

The mob vote always feels like "hey we have all 3 of the mobs already implemented in the new version, so choose which two are we gonna cut out".

There’s no excuse. Do it. Stop trying to defend laziness.
They should make the mob vote be like. All of them get added, but whoever wins gets an extra cosmetic or set item. So if the iceologer won you could've gotten like some kind of staff that creates the ice rain. The glow squid could've gotten a glow stick that you could throw or shoot and it would travel down caves or wherever you need like to see where enemies are and it would give them the glow effect within the glow it gives off. If the Glare won you could have some sort of camo against other mobs and players, not like invis potion you can still sort of see the outline, just see through. y'know, etc, etc.
So everyone still gets what they want just whoever wins gets a cosmetic or useful item..
They should let the mob vote, but instead of choosing a mob to add we would choose the order of arrival of the mobs:
- The winner in the upcoming update
- the 2nd in the middle of the year (between 2 big shifts)
- The 3rd in the next big update with the winner of the next mob vote.
It would allow the work to be done if that is really the problem and everyone would be happy

When I started seeing the videos for the mob vote this year, I thought to myself "Oh boy, this again. What flavor of useless will we be getting now?" I did not however expect the immediate uproar accompanied by 'We're Not Gonna Take It' and 'Feed the Machine'. That was a welcome surprise, let me tell you.

It’s so sad that everyone hated on the penguin. Icy areas were in need of a new mob, and the penguin has so much use. From making boating faster to speeding up ice boat tunnels, there’s so much more to be done. Also, what even the point of the crab? If mojang made the crab claw an item, it wouldn’t make sense if it had super long block reach, so maybe just 2-3 blocks further. There’s literally no use to that. As everyone said, just walk 1 block forward. Also, everyone hates on dog armor but I don’t think it’s that bad. Makes me more comfortable to bring my dog with me when I go do something.
i think the penguin would have some use in boat ice highways to go even further beyond, but everyone seems to think its worthless so it gonna lose :(

Honestly these mobs are the most likely three to actually be added as a runner-up vote in the future, which Mojang said they would be doing with the various votes. Hopefully this happens
this is the third mob vote since the phantom, and they said that the loser of votes that happened after the first ever mob vote would not be scrapped.
@@Superricestickyyeah they promised the idea wouldn’t be “scrapped” but I think it was mostly to lessen the sting of your mob losing. Also to cover their behinds in case they want to add it in the future for an update that would benefit from the mob.

I also wanted Penguins to win too. Out of all 3 for this year they’re the cutest. Last year I also wanted Rascals to win and out of their competitors last year, they were both the most useful and the most cute. Many people would be happy if all three are added but still, it’s a mob vote but people asking Mojang to add all three is so that the community would not need to argue with each other about the preferences.

I'm afraid so. I feel like the difference between the crab and the other two, is that we don't know certainly how this feature will be implemented. So it has the potencial to just disappoint us. Meanwhile, the dog armor and the boat buff are much more concrete ideas, although they may not seem so interesting to some people.
I've told multiple people that they're gonna be disappointed when they reach isn't as good as they thought nor helpful
None of these are gonna be great. It's about PR, not an actual good mechanic.

when i watched the crab video: damn that’s really cool that you can get extra reach, probably going to be an offhand thing though so you can only use it while building because you will probably have a shield in hand in a battle… so far this is the best option
then armadillo comes out and i watch the video and think: holy shit that’s so good, dog armour is perfect who wouldn’t want that, and atleast something new is happening in the savanna that hasn’t been touched since it’s release basically… this is my favourite option
then the penguin video: ok, i like the penguin it’s cute, i can tell it’s modeled after an emperor penguin because of the yellow on top… but there isn’t much use for fast boats when we have ice travel, i wish minecarts were faster
i watch DanTDMs video about the mob vote options: he’s right actually, i’m probably not taking my dog outside of my home so what’s the point of dog armour except a home invasion, i guess the crab claw is probably a better option… but stylish dogs

I basically went through this thought process as well, but I came to the conclusion that I would probably vote armadillo because the savannah needs a biome specific mob and it’s cute.
Plus ngl, crabs are kinda creepy.

How I see the crab claw would work is if once you get the claw, you can use it in a smithing table to upgrade it. So, for tools, it'll be an extended reach for digging or building. For weapons, extended reach to kill. Honestly, the crab would be fantastic if this is how it works... Also, need to make a secret dance move when the jukebox plays 👀

Yeah. It feels like Minecaft players care too much about survival functionality these days, and only care about or want features that serve a functional purpose. It's ironic because penguins have a good use, but the community seems to think otherwise.

Exactly. It is clearly the best choice. You don't need extra reach you can just walk. Everyone just leaves their dog at their home and never do anything with it. Faster boats would be incredible and very helpful and practical. The community doesn't know what is actually needed to have fun in the long run. The mobs themselves are all really well designed though and are all cute as promised and so should all be added
