Orcs. Those are orcs.
David Thrush goddamn space Uruks
Klingons were always the orcs of Star Trek. Vuclans were the elves.
Really really really boring elves...
Dalton Schnieder ehhh, Klinglons=Orcs yeah.. kind of... but Vulcans+elves yeah.. no
Let's see: Klingons = Similar to humans but more "primitive" in appearance, warlike, horrible attitudes...sounds like orcs to me. Vulcans = Pointy ears, feels superior to humans and just about every one else, smug......sounds like elves to me. Then you got Tellarites who come off very much as dwarves.
DAMMIT JIM, THOSE AREN'T KLINGONS!!!
and why would you said that? You've never been in space. You don't know how alien races look like. You are free to have your own opinion, but you are part of the problem.... you are one of the reasons we don't live in star trek. You are so enclosed, orthodox and locked into your own ass that you can't embrace the new that's coming.
That was one of the most unwarranted, judgmental, self-indulgent, ridiculous replies that I've ever seen on UA-cam. And that's saying something. A reply to what was clearly just a pun that he thought might be funny. A pun that may have reflected his own feelings on this subject, or what he felt the general sentiments of the video were. You have no idea what the intent was from that one simple pun. Yet you're going to try to rip his entire life apart to prove that he's not a special, non-judgmental, snowflake like you. You are, in fact, part of the problem. And don't bother responding to this because any response that you could muster, other than an apology to john doe, would make you look like even more of an idiot. Not to mention the fact that, I couldn't possibly care less about what someone like you has to say.
Knight Moritz
We don't live in Star Trek because, first, it's a TV show, but more importantly, second, according to the show's own canon, we should be living through the horrors of a post-nuclear war that started in 1997. Even then, the actual story of Star Trek won't start until 2063 when Zephram Cochrane makes his first Earth-based warp flight in April.
It's not because of purists, it's because we're living in the wrong timeline that Star Trek isn't reality today.
Dumbass.
thought it started in 2026?
They are named Qlingons from crunos and their weapon of choice is macbeth (don't ask how that works)
Thank you for EXPLAINING the obvious.. You didn't EXPLAIN anything. The title should be "Klingon redesign, the difference between TOS, TNG and Discovery explained for blind people."
Exactly. I cam hoping for a reason for the change, not a video pointing out the obvious differences. And this b.s. got over a million views?
So I guess I missed the part of the video where you actually “explained” the Klingon redesign. You know, like your title suggests? All you did was point out the obvious differences. This video is a waste of time.
Yra very crapy
Pretty much.
I want my 4 minutes back.
Agreed.
Kind of like the show itself & the whole redesign of the Klingons in the first place.
Do the ST: Discovery team not know that their main audience is a bunch of geeks and nerds who are super interested in lore, continuity, and precision?? The minute a ST producer forgets its audience, is the minute their show fails.
Joscelyne K It seriously looks like they are looking to find a new larger main stream audience. I don't think that includes the old timers who grew up with trek ... I'm gonna watch it anyway but man this looks so disappointing already.
The answer is that they don't care, they payed a market research company a lot of money and that's the design they pulled out of their asses... I mean "researched".
Star Trek is a niche franchise with a idiosyncratic vision, and idiosyncratic visions tend to bè effaced when making an IP more mainstream, even if its inescapable that the idiosyncratic vision Will Always remain the source of the IP's appeal. Star Wars was such a Successful trilogy despite its simplistic and manichean nature that It only benefitted from the various stories and deconstructions by talented authors Who injected complexity and ambiguity to the franchise through novels, cartoons and videogames(See KOTOR II by Chris Avellone for a very good example of this). But Star Trek it's not Star Wars, and making a pausterized and action packed version of Star Trek with no metaphors and less moral ambiguity, with the Klingons being regressed from Honorable boisterous bruisers to ugly purple space orcs, its One of the most fantastic examples of some authors missing the point that i've ever seen.
Joscelyne K - Speaking as a Star Trek "geek AND nerd" I feel I must...SECOND THAT EMOTION! ^^
My vocabulary just increased 291%
Absolute click bait. There is nothing EXPLAINED in this video. Just compared.
reported for misleading title
I came for ANSWERS!
This lying P'Tok has no honor!
They shall write songs telling of his shame which will be sung across the galaxy.
Besides, this video is only lazy job...
The STD (yes, it's that bad, IMHO) Klingons exist before the 'cucaracha' Klingons Kirk dealt with (created with that visual because Gene had a feud with a latino neighbor) and Worf...
One logical explanation is that from the STD visual, Klingons went to a complete overhaul, getting a more 'human' visual (no ridges)... Later, ashamed of this betrayal to themselves, they changed 'back' and, although not being able to revert completely to their original look, they ended with a unique identifiable visual (Worf).
because there is no explanation other than Star Trek has been Hijacked.
“Enterprise“ solved the problem of no brow ridges in “TOS“ and now “Discovery“ has completely destroyed the continuity. They’ll be no explaining this away.
Enterprise takes place before Discovery which takes place before TOS which takes place before TNG.
The Kalvin timeline splits before TOS.
@@somebodykares1 there would still NOT be an evolution this drastic !
@@AudiophileTommy The show has had its fair share of evolution / de-evolution plots so don't be going saying its not possible for such a dramatic change. The show is science fiction anyways and also this video was trying to explain it was genetic tampering.
Yes there is, Disco belongs to some alternate fiction universe and is not Canon. Sold, done, bin it, move on. It has made its bed with its wife Kathleen Kennedy.
I'm a fan of Star Trek. This goes way back to the 1960's. Even then there was something about the Klingons that pulled me in. I love the Klingons. I was OK with the changes they gave them in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. By the time we got to Star Trek: TNG, the Klingons were quite established and accepted. These new so-called aliens are NOT Klingons. You can redesign the ships, Starfleet uniforms and even the special effects. But do not touch the well established aliens we have grown to know and love. This includes the Romulans.
If only the klingons that we grew up with, teamed up with the federation to go against these "new klingons"...and wouldn't it be even more amazing if Worf and Martok had the influence to make that happen ..cmon star trek discovery ....it's in your name...so let's 'discover' ? Don't forget the episode of DS9 where worf explains to the crew that traveled back in time with him, why the klingons changed in appearance from star trek TOS to TNG/DS9 ....too bad whoever posted this video didn't talk about that part...
They state that it was due to design and make up limiations of the 1990s.
@@WaveForceful You mean If the Specialeffekts are changing Smash everything in a trashcan and Take the Garage what comes out
This Klingons ist one of the Things why i don't Like with Discovery. Sporedrive Burn Klingonshape
As much as I truly hate the Klingon redesign, what really makes this show stand out from canon is all the damn holograms. They obviously wanted to make this show a sequel where they could easily explain all this high-tech stuff, but someone who didn't know/understand/care about Trek canon demanded it be a prequel to the original Star Trek. Right where it totally doesn't fit.
I guess I don't really understand the point of this video. The title Klingon Redesign EXPLAINED. So I see that title and think you're going to talk about the decisions, the rationale behind the change. Maybe include behind the scenes comments or interviews with the show staff.
But you actually just described the physical changes... which we can all plainly see. There was nothing in this video that was the particularly interesting nor useful. There was no point to this.
...i cam here to say the same thing.
I agree with you Michael. I thought he would give an explanation of the background and etymology of the changes, but alas I guess he just wanted clicks on his video. In that it looks as if he succeeded!!
True. Perhaps redesign EXPLORED would be appropriate.
I think it is intended as an explanation for non-Trek fans. i.e. to those unfamiliar with Star Trek "this" is why some narrow-minded fans, who clearly forget that the Klingons have gone through many re-imaginings over the course of the franchise, are upset.
Jacques Lapeyre except that every other change (and there really has only been two: Ridges and hair to human looking and back to ridges and hair) has been explained through a very plausible explanation in STENT.
STD comes along and has absolutely no explanation and no one can come up with one. Unless STD is in the Kelvin (JJ Abrams) Universe!
Personally, I find the new and redesigned Klingon look for "Star Trek: Discovery" to be a complete TURN-OFF for me. I am so fed up with the changes for the "Trek" franchise that I feel like shouting at it.
shut up
they look cooler than anything you can design
The changes aren't by choice. it's all due to licensing, they have a license to make a star trek show, but not rights to make main universe shows. bureaucracy at its finest.
+Adam Scott thats fucked, aaaaa klingons suck, why not give the Vulcens bunny ears, Rumulons donky ass ears, oh Star Fleet boyh genders skerts
Robert Polanco you are right it shouldn't have changed at all from the 60s! I. Sick of all this change. Gah. Change is hard to deal with because I don't know exactly what it will be like! Woman back as Yomans with short skirts please!!!!
The new Klingons from Discovery speak too slowly...as if they don't know their lines!
Constance McNamara Romanowski AND they move too slow. Warrior race that walks and talks in slow motion....blah.
That's because they made the makeup and suits to heavy there's a reason the Klingons are always Mongolian like in dress and makeup isn't to much to make it easier on the actors. If they changed Klingons so radically why not other races just turn andorians into blue versions the taalz from star wars they make more sense morphologically for ice planets than just blue humans with antenna.
Is it not so we have time to read the subtitles?
Basically the director look at the Klingons and said " these things aren't alien enough, the hell with the fanbase I want them to be more alien" so now we have Abominations
Whatever the hell those things are they're not Klingons
theyre klingons get over it
Jim Bones No sir. They are NOT Klingons !
Theyre not your grandmas klingons, but theyre klingons and they look cool as hell! stop crying about how you want an alien race to look human becasue thats what you grew up with when they had no makeup and prosthetic skills. Idiots.
boo hoo muh klingons... i bet youre one of those nerd that even learned the klingon language
but in realilty Id whoop your crybaby ass in a bathleth battle. Ill take all your honor and shit on your forehead so you can look like the old klingon
Designer 1: Done
Designer 2: What's that?
Designer 1: A Klingon!
Designer 2: That doesn't look like a Klingon.
Designer 1: Well, we started out with a Klingon, threw some blue and black paint on it, shaved it, and then smashed it's face in with a shovle.
Designer 2: That's not a Klingon.
Designer 1: Yeah I know, but they said they wanted something new and edgy. Look, I'm not getting paid enough and this show is only to sell their subscription service. How long do you really think it's gonna last?
Designer 2: But that's not a Klingon.
Designer 1: Just say it is and defend the statement saying they are some genetic offshoot or evolutionary offshoot or something. I don't care, I'm too lazy to change them now. They are the new Klingons!
Designer 2: Yay.... new Klingons! I'm gonna go puke now, I think they are onto us. They know we aren't taking this seriously. The fans are going to crucify us for this.
i take this story as true.
Perhaps the real story will come out in a book called, How to Alienate a Massive Fan Base and Screw the Pooch on a Profitable Franchise.
Well played. Well played.
APJ1986, we were not supposed to talk about this outside of the design studio. You are going to get us caught.
Man I'm chopping the wood and getting out the nails. Looks like the creators of this show are gonna go the way of Jesus if they aren't careful.
Hey the humans are so passe now, why not redesign them too?
Vulcans should have been redesigned.
What always irritated me about Worfs Little 'Klingon Facts' is that they are plain wrong sometimes.
Very weird, right?
Like for example "Klingons do not laugh". Where the heck does he get that from? We havent even seen one little, i don't know 'Tribe' that has a Culture of never laughing, or something like that! Nothing!
Klingons do not laugh is just simply wrong in all ways of perception.
Just an Example though.

I am no star trek expert, I was confused because of that as well when I saw the episode were Riker is on the kligon ship in season 2 I believe. Through word you get the expression that klingons are a lot more diffrent from humans than they actually are Worf just happens to have a lack of humor etc. I explain it to myself that his behaviour is a consequence of him not actually being raised by Klingons. He maybe doesnt know all that much about kligon culture in practise maybe it appeared to him that having no honor is a klingon thing because it was something he got from books or simply said so to feel like he belongs somewhere. Or he just follows the rules and standards of Klingon society a lot more than the modern klingons. Idk that are just my explanations I feel like it's kinda hard to tell with him as he is the only Klingon we really see in action all the time.
@@slevinchannel7589 I always took those as things Worf sometimes makes up in order to not have to smile XD
The redesign is it is so heavy it hinders the actor's ability to show basic facial expressions. Which becomes more pronounced when you compare Shazad Latif's portrayals of Voq and Tyler. There is almost nothing left of the human face for him to convey any emotion in Voq.
The actors do a pretty good job using body language to convey their character's mood but some of that is lost in face to face encounters.
The old Klingons didn't look great but these are worse. They already decided what Klingons look like, so they have to stick with it. I can understand minor improvements, but not a complete redesign.
I think it looks bad, i liked TNG/DS9 Klingons.
They looked like the same species and culture every time too!
Well little nigga, these klingons are more anatomically correct. A small budget for TNG/DS9 left the production team with only the ability to plaster a forehead on klingons. The Discovery Klingons have whole body suits that resemble non human skin. Ds9 and TNG wish they had the budget to do these things.
You seem to be missing a very important part of story telling.Consistency. Sticking to your story.
those klingons go back to tos movies too so its a real shitstorm
D Ray -- Lol. So you checked to make sure they were anatomically correct??
The Klingon redesign was one of the reasons I stopped watching Discovery.... It was completely unnecessary....which is kind of how I feel about the entire series...
I think they probably did it because in canon the Klingons would have looked like the ones from tos after the Star Trek enterprise retcon.
I guess someone now needs to do a video explaining your understanding of the word explain.
#NotMyKlingons!!!!!!!
the #notmy_____ hashtags have been around way longer than the election though haven't they?
And even if it IS a reference to a political hashtag, the meme has been so far separated from it's origin that it's not really any kind of political statement worth taking a stand over. :\
Make Klingons great again
They look like the vampires in skyrim.
Yup, Vampires is the main vibe I get from those, especially with those fantasy armors, overall looks and those coffins.
Maybe they're vampire Klingons. Let's hope they don't make them sparkly.
I'm glad someone said it.
I would personally say orcs more then vampires but I can see were your coming from
funny you should say that. i thought there armour looked like armour from a vampire count from Warhammer Fantasy
Thank God I never had to suffer through this crap. I love Star Trek, my dad and I would always go to the movies together to watch all of the movies. We'd watch TNG, DS9, and Voyager when they were on TV, and we always had such a great time together. His favorites were The Wrath of Khan and First Contact. I never saw the original Star Trek episode with Khan and one day he took off from work and pulled me out of school so we could both watch the rerun of the original "Space Seed" episode. He found out that it was gonna be on TV from the TV guide and decided to surprise me, much to my mother's annoyance.
We both loved the Klingons and how they went from adversaries to friends in TNG, with Worf serving as an officer on the Enterprise. So the thought of Discovery changing everything that we knew about them just felt wrong and I didn't want any part of it.
Sadly my dad passed on before Enterprise and Nemesis. I remember thinking that he would've loved Enterprise, especially with the frozen Borg. I also remember thinking that I was glad that he didn't have to watch the sad way Enterprise ended or suffer through Nemesis.
That's why I can't get into these new shows like Discovery or Picard. They just feel wrong, maybe it's because Gene Roddenberry passed on and there isn't anyone left to look after his vision of the characters. IDK, all I do know is that this crap ain't Star Trek and I don't want anything to do with it!
Roddenberry died during the next generation his vision was upheld at least up to deep space 9 with reworking of the ferengi being very well done compared to tngs ferengi. I cant speak for voyager or the one with scott bakula because neither are as good but i agree 💯percent discovery looks like crap
Eugene roddenberry is looking after discovery and picard. His son. So...
@@seanraines5871 so what? and not really they pay him so they can put a "roddenbury" name on stuff.... he in no way has creative control of discovery like his dad did with Star Trek..... also he's not even proven himself to make any decent shows he's just riding on his dads reputation
star trek is not a monarchy
i think season 2 of picard might be a worth a go... but yeah discovery just was garbage for me
Next Gen was a lot more interlectual and about the actual story not all the actions and stuff, Picard is more like this than discovery
@@DarkShroom yet it's the same people behind both. I knew majel roddenberry brought things out that gene roddenberry had wanted to do like andromeda so I figured eugene was doing his part
They did not just change the physical characteristics of the the Klingons, they changed their culture as well. In Discovery they had the Klingons eat cooked meet. In TNG Kurn thought the cooked turkey was left in the sun too long. Remember the Klingon eat Gagh which is live worms. They messed up the vulcans too, in the scene where Sarek's assistant kills himself his blood is shown as red as the light goes thought his skin.
Cooked meet= Klingon Chili Contest
"Klingon Redesign EXPLAINED"... Not sure simply talking about how the redesign looks/compares constitutes as explaining the redesign...
I missed the "explanation" part... must be in the "reboot" of this video
They were designed by the Pakleds, "we are smart." No you're not!
Hey, you know that thing we're all cool with? well, we're gonna fuck with it.
Why?...uhhh we were bored.
let's make 'em look like the jeepers creepers guy.
i do if i'm sleep deprived and it's about 3am
Ha ha!!
yes-and next time we make them more look like dinosaurier like t rex from fucking jurassic klingon park
They should have invaded the planet Rogaine while they still had some hair.
Rogaine was the name of Kethas epetai-Khemara's consort.
Cause they suck at doing star trek and star wars these days
When watching videos on the “new” Klingon design, people tend to always refer back to The Next Generation Klingons, but that look goes back to The Motion Picture and the movies that followed afterwards.
"To a Klingon, a beard is a symbol of courage."
- Worf, son of Mogh
I guess these must all be cowards then. :)
dude 20 years ago people have worn beards 100 years ago people wore beards. people have been wearing beards since civilization started. it makes more sense that some have beards and some don't even in the military people would wear beards
This is not just about hair, it's about whole look. They suppose to value tradition yet they change more than chameleon driving trough Vegas.
"ououo uouoiou ououuo oiouou rououour ouououuouou."
- Chewbacca, a Wookie
They must be, these Klingoffs have no honour.
I agree with you, the beard symbolized the courage and masculinity of a warrior. I believe the Star Trek Generation Klingon stayed true to the origins of the original Star Trek Klingon race. There has to be some type of difference to distinguish a male from a female other than the bosoms.
Clickbait much? How exactly is it 'EXPLAINED'?
You just listed all the changes without any explanation at all (with few speculations at most).
'CJ explores and explains one of the most controversial aspects of the new show: the redesign of the Klingons!'
Yeah... no.
I was hoping for some insight, maybe info from creators of the show as to WHY they decided to make these changes. Useless video.

They could have just said the first season took place in the Mirror Universe, which would have been a great move because it would have allowed them to redesign the show a little and unite the fans, but they burnt that bridge...
+3 years later, if you have not gotten an explanation yet, the makers of the show do not care about it fitting into continuity or making any sense, they think of you as suckers and guaranteed views....
Should have tweaked the look, not a complete redesign.
It isn't a complete redesign, have you watched the video? It's just the features of Klingons taken to the extreme, with the exception of hair.
They've also changed the way they act, speak and how they treat their dead.
They made a new race and culture and called them Klingon
@@dantheultimate2497 it redesign idiot. Skin tones don't magically morph to be purple either
@@dantheultimate2497 I'm not sure what you are looking at but that is a utter and complete redesign. I would not have even thought they were Klingons if I hadn't seen this video. I would have thought just some other Alien humanoid. They look NOTHING like a Klingon.
These designers have no honor. Who is the PetaQ who came up with this redesign?
hopefully slowing roasting over a qul.
Those are not Klingons.
Those are Klingoffs.
I hope that at some point, DISCO will give us a plausible in-universe explanation for their new look.
This didn't explain anything. All you did was describe what we can already see with our own eyes.
The only explanation is that the producers / directors of discovery have never watched Star Trek.
And whoever made this video doesn't know the meaning of the word "explain"
Ohhhh, I know!
*WHY* do these producers keep making stuff that *completely betrays* what the fans WANT ??
*Creative suicide* ... !
I'm pretty sure they never watched star trek by the plot
Gerard Whittaker, its change for the sake of change. Disney has done the same thing with Star Wars. I have not watched any of Discovery, and most likely will not. The change of the Klingons is but one reason. Another is i wont pay above and beyond what i already do to my satalite and internet provider just to see a show. Call me old fashioned. LOL
Guys do your research. This is how Klingons originally looked before the events in Star Trek Enterprise. There is a 2 part episode. Season 4 episode 15
This is turning good they brought the old writers in to fix the mess!! the new klingons are an insult to me!! its like star wars changing the way yoda looks!! the Klingons were iconic these lizard Men looking Wannabees are not the klingons of old!! I NEED ANSWERS OR ILL CARRY ON BAD MOUTHING THIS SHOW!! NO SCRIPT CAN EVER FIX SUCH A FATAL FLAW!!
ALSO THE STAR TREK FRANCHISE FOR DECADES WAS AT ITS CORE AN INSPIRATIONAL SCI FI - OUR FUTURE PRESENTED IN A POSITIVE LIGHT !! GIVING HOPE FOR OUR FUTURE!! STOP TURNING IT INTO SOME BULLSHIT POST APOCALYPTIC NIGHTMARE!!
PLEASE STOP PISSING OFF THE STAR TREK FANS !! AND SHOW SOME RESPECT TO GENE RODDENBERRYS VISION OF THE FUTURE!!!
TO THE WRITERS - YOU ARE PAID HANDSOMELY TO MAKE THIS SHOW!! AT LEAST TAKE YOUR TIME TO DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND KEEP TO THE SPIRIT OF THE SHOW!! AND HAVE SOME RESPECT FOR THE FANS!! STOP INSULTING US!! We are the ones that promote this show, tell our children to watch this show!! if i think your going to teach my vhildren crap ill just tell thwm to stop!! i will stop!!
Disgraceful
My problem with the redesign of the Klingons is the make up is so dense it takes any signs of emotion away you cant tell if they are angry, sad etc... I know they are trying to move to an uterly alein look and feel, but for me it was the closeness to ourselves that made them so popular with fans. I think the makers have a major error in messing too much with one of our fav aliens.
THUMBS DOWN. You didn't "explain" the redesign. You just told us what we already knew (from photos: they have new faces and uniforms). Giant waste of my time
.
described (with some detail) would be a more appropriate word choice.
could be that those are pure klingon without that genetic s*it that happen in one of their colonys
Well then it fits with STD as the entire show is a huge waste of time and money
Star Trek Discovery: "OH HEY! Look at this wonderful cannon. *Throws it in the dumpster."
They could have done just the opposite...make a series about the time-traveling faction of the federation from the distant future that was featured in Voyager. That would have been a totally different kind of show.
That's an interesting idea. I think a movie about it would be awesome.
Since that canon is now cannon and was used to kill off the borg, it's probably right.
honestly those guys, and the fact that their genesis is pretty much the end of voyager, are the reason we haven't gone post-voyager yet. Once you have time travel you can use however you want, conflict is kind of dead in the water. As it is, a lot of people who oversimplify the risk in the slingshot technique still bitch to this day about why didn't kirk just go back in time for this plot or that plot..
no, they wrote themselves into a corner. as neat as it would be, post-voyager just wouldn't work anymore. Plus it was all wrapped up so neat and tidy. The dominion war kind of finished off each story's race, peace was kind of perpetual, and even the galaxy-spanning threat of the borg have become easy to fight off by the end... so there was really nowhere to go
That said, I still would have gone with, er, Captain Frasier's era. You get your retro appeal but you can still use that just-barely-pre-TNG tech. have your primitive holodecks that don't do much yet. have your wars with the romulans and your skirmishes with the klingons. I dunno honestly there's not much they can do period that is going to be satisfying. Star Trek doesn't need more entries in the franchise. What we need is a new franchise made in the SPIRIT of star trek, with the same old kind of thoughtfulness and adventure, but without the canon baggage.
instead we got The Orville, and even that sounds better than this.
They changed the Klingons? I have yet to be able to see any of Star Trek discovery is it any good
I love Star Trek. For a while now I’ve been on a binge watch, going by release date. I’ve watched the original series, the animated series, The Star Trek motion pictures one through six, the next generation, Star Trek generations, and now I’m in the middle of deep space nine. Next up after that I’ll watch Voyager, enterprise, and then discovery.
I’ve seen a few clips, even part of an episode of discovery, and I think it’s pretty cool. I’ve heard where it supposed to be in the timeline and I’ve heard about how it kind of sucks especially with the Klingons.
With all the hate surrounding discovery, it makes me question whether or not I should even enjoy it if I watch it even though I love everything Star Trek.
I guess that’s my question. Should I enjoy it?
Maybe I’m answering my own question. But I think that if I enjoy it, I should let myself enjoy it Even though I could have criticisms of the show. I guess I could feel the same way about discovery as I am with the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Dislike it because it doesn’t really fit in the prime universe but enjoy the bits and pieces of the show that I enjoy.
The real reason why the Klingons look different is a licensing issue between Paramount and CBS. Paramount is creating the series but they can't use anything that resembles the TV shows since CBS has the rights to that. So you're basically getting a reboot of the prime timeline, that's why the Discovery ship, the Klingons, and the uniforms look different. There's a great video by Midnight's Edge on their UA-cam channel that explains it more thoroughly and why Discovery is such a mess.
But the TNG klingon look (actually the klingon movie look) was in Star Trek 1, 3 and 5 as well 6. Paramount should have the rights to that right?
+ SuperG50 Zero
If they're gonna do that, why bother?? If they cannot use the designs in TOS and TNG due to copyright issues, then they should just have called it a reboot or a reimagined Trek universe and NOT have associated it with the prime timeline.
The vulcans are still the same though.
Doesn't Viacom own both CBS and Paramount ?
I saw that video and thank you for bringing it up.
The redesign is crap. This is supposed to be only 10 years before Kirk and the Enterprise go on their 5 year journey. Whoever made the decision to do this major design change royally fucked up.
the Enterprise is suposedly out there flying with captain Pike at this point..and in TOS Klingons had normal human faces and smooth foreheads.. wich was explained in Enterprise as an augment virus gone wrong wich left Klingons looking like humans for nearly a century until a cure was found arround TOS was over.
Those Klingons are derivated from the JJ universe ones.. a total fuck up
I never liked the Enterprise explanation either. Originally the Klingons were said to genetically modify small batches of their own as scouts when meeting other races. Thus Klingons scouting human space looked more human and those in Romulan space looked more Romulan. This policy was phased out by the end of TOS and by TGN its just a dark dishonorable chapter of Klingon history.
*20 year mission
Discovery is not from the same dimension/ universe as the original star trek which now seems obvious from the last episode
BRUCE E FERRY, true. I wonder how they would explain the situation with Archer's meeting the Klingon that lost the ridges due to that disease interacting with the destabilized klingon augmented DNA, with Kirk seing the old-style Klingons in TOS and the cured Klingons in Search for Spock, it's curious how losing the ridges in Enterprise time period suddenly made super ridges pop up 10 years before start of the original series and disappear again until the Search for Spock...
The ridges have always covered more than their brow. It goes down their back. You can see this on Worf in the TNG episode where he's crippled by the falling storage container, when he goes in for surgery.
This is actually the only thing about Discovery that has pissed me off. They admitted on After Trek they did it because Why Not?
When Worf had spinal surgery he had ridges all the way down his spine, just saying.
Groovy Guru That was a good episode
The genitronic scanner
The Klingon Death Rite
His importance to the crew and bonds he forged with them
And medical ethics
I really want to like discovery - I've tried to keep an open mind - but I swear with each new change I hear about, my expectations and hopes die a little bit more.
Don't bash too much, this show may actually bring insight to the diehard fan's questions about Klingon Augment Virus KAV --This has been needed for a very long time.
Kyle Oakeson they gave a pretty good explaination in an episode of ST Enterprise, in my personal opinion.
CBS is trying too hard to make it appeal to a wider audience and in doing so they're alienating the fans of Star Trek. The fans are always the vanguard that bring in new viewers of a franchise. It's the fans that control how a show is perceived. Subtle changes could be made and include vastly superior sets and effects. But no, it looks like they're using the name Star Trek on something that's not Star Trek at all. They will have neither fans and new viewers in significant quantities.I hope I'm wrong but it's not looking good.
Kat Tootle Wow you sound exactly like those old geezers from 1987 when they pretty much said the exact same thing about star trek the next generation.
Yes that's right I said it, when star trek the next generation was about to make its debut on the air, a lot of these old geezers at that time period were complaining saying that's not exactly like the original star trek series from the 1960's that they've known and grown up with and fell in love with.
It's just so weird and odd that history is always repeating itself over and over again, and not being open minded to change.
But eventually within the final analysis, the old folks finally came around to it and accepted star trek the next generation as its own thing and finally became open minded and grew to love it eventually.
😅 if discovery turns out to be awesome (as I genuinely hope it will be) I will very happily eat my words.
I can explain it.
Someone said, "I have a whole new vision for the Klingons"
Then they said, "Don't worry people will accept them"
Then... "People will get used to it.."
And finally... "ok.. I screwed up."
I ABSOLUTELY DESPISE THE NEW LOOK!!!!!!
They have taken "redesign" to a different level. They are not recognizably Klingon. Their ships do not look anything like what we know as Klingon ships. Where's my K't'inga? They look like a completely different race, and they don't even SOUND Klingon anymore. (And they also mispronounce 'Kahless', which was always said "Kay-less")
yeah they look like stupid
Kent Goertzen I would not have recognized them if it weren’t for the caption. They DO NOT look recognizably Klingon. The uniforms look awful, the lack of hair and facial hair. And they way they act is not like even the first Klingons we ever saw. No, just no.
I've been keeping my mouth shut throughout all this but yeah, I thought they were some sort of weird looking Xindi too. Here's hoping this new series bombs big and the powers that be tell the SJW's to go sit on a photon torpedo.
A DigitalFreak Video Byte, AMEN!
@Kent Goertzen : When I watched episode 1, I had *no clue* that the alien ship Cmdr. Burnham found or the alien she faced was Klingon until we saw the Klingon insignia and the computer voice identify it as Klingon. And I can say this because I never watched any of the trailers or read any of the reviews beforehand. Anyway, I could not name one thing about the way these so-called "Klingons" looked or behaved that I would identify as Klingon. Rather, they look and act like a completely different species.
I think, that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. There was nothing wrong with the TNG Klingons. There was no need for any redesign. It's things like this that drive me further away rather than pull me towards a new Star Trek series.
its sjw and pc culture. klingons were brown bad guys so its racist. fuck sjw
I had the same thought - wasn't quite happy with the new klingons, but the show is still good and they grow on you (maybe not as klingons anyway ;)). I'm kinda surprised by this show. Some things i did not like or still don't like (Klingons were strange but are now ok, spore drive is just terrible powerfull tech, i hate it - it's like beaming from earth to Qo'noS) still this show is good. I like the new captain a lot. Burnham is getting better and the story is interesting. Though i hope it will be successfull - because i wanna see more of it by now.
@emoAnarchist - bollocks mate. The new Klingons are caricature Africans. Try again.
Skiamakhos prove it, the new Klingons are clearly based on, and mocking, trump supporters.
I have never watched a Star Trek movie or series except of discovery and you can’t argue that they look so much cooler than they used to.
It's difficult when they mix it in middle. At first everyone accepts a better makeup & graphics era, converting it into the evolution of the characters consistent in a timeline with exception to Enterprise's obvious production.
I really like Warf! These pictures just made me think I was seeing Bram Stoker's Dracula, equating Draco, Dracona, Draconian or Reptilians. Considering Warf sleeps with Earth women like Deanna Troy, it's a line I'd rather not have seen crossed. I not sure but Riker may react differently to this.?? Are we really so Enlightened "ecclesiastically", "celestially" speaking??? But I haven't seen the series yet & would have to watch it before making a final decision. I just don't see why sometimes somebody's got to change a good thing that's working. Especially when you can just make a new race, because now they're doing up, downs & sidespins in evolution.??
I hate everything about the new "Klingons", bit the most galling thing is the fact that they invented a sister for Spock. Spock never had a sister, or half sister, but what he did have was a half brother. So is she meant to be his sister? If yes, then they have to reference Sybok, they have no choice. That said, I wont be watching this.
this is a masive bowl of hot Steaming shit
TheCrazyFereldan they will explain this continuity thing
They look different, the armour is different, and the technology is different. They are not Klingons, and the people in charge should have just created a new race instead of bastardizing a pre existing one.
I forgot about Sybok. Maybe he was transspecies & transgendered?
She's supposed to be Spock's step sister. Which is still fucking stupid.
Those are supposed to be Klingons?
"You must think me a fool to make your lies so transparent!"
Unfortunately, they are Klingons.
Let's be honest. The old Klingons looked like humans in bad cosplay. It was too "transparent" that they were just in makeup.
I agree with sapien. I really like these new klingons. I thought the old ones looked way too much like humans, like most star trek races.
I think it was In a ST:TNG episode where explained why many of the races on the galaxy shares this look-a-like: we all came from a common genetic pool and each evolved on different paths.
yeah, but if you´d seen the one TNG episode, it is all explained...they all have the same root, every single race in the milky way...right down to the DNA
You differently answered one big question for me.
What did they look in STAR TREK THE MOTION PICTURE? I seem to recall that was significantly different than the show and inspired the look of STAR TREK 3.
Their teeth are different too. They look cool, but why redesign Klingons at all? Just make a new race of aliens, with an entirely new culture. Oh right, too much work, not enough imagination. The problem with the new Trek spin-offs is they go backwards, not forward in the timeline. If they went forward, they don't need any canon. Let's see humanity 200 years after TNG; Transwarp drive. Phasic cloaks. Interdimensional travel. Humans splicing DNA from animals into their genome to have leopard print skin or horns from ram DNA - use your imagination. Space suits that are an energy shield, 1 mm thick and form tightly around the body. Tech so amazing it seems like magic. Speak with real scientists and ask them what could be achieved with an infinite power source so small you could hold it in your hand. With all the advances in physics, biology etc., this is the best the the creators can do? Lame
Chill Bluewood facts
To be fair, all sci-fi authors from back in the day greatly underestimated the scale of the progress a space-faring civilization will make. It's just a campy TV show. They can't re-write the original setting. This is just costume creep. Star Trek has always reflected the time it's written in more than a plausible future.
Totally agree
This might be very cool to look at, but it doesn't make for a very interesting TV show (at least for a lot of people). You can even see this with existing tech like the Transporter. They always have to write in some bogus reason why they can't use a transporter in the situation, because if they could, the episode would be finished. The further they advance in time, the more "magical" the tech is, it becomes increasingly hard to write interesting plot. That's why I think they also went backwards with ENT. Not because they lack imagination for cool stuff.
I think they called them Klingons to keep the old fans interested.
About post-TNG time: almost impossible. At the end (and also at the end of Voyager) such extreme technology had been invented that the Federation basically would be unbeatable, or it would basically be impossible to write good stories around it all and keep some sort of balance.
I was worried I'd be missing out on a new Trek series, Now I feel better, I have no interet in seeing this any longer. How could they screw up such a well-defined, important race as the Klingons?
Cranzzst Jones Because that don't care...
Cranzzst Jones No one will miss you
Cranzzst Jones It's like putting lipstick on a picture of Abraham Lincoln
The Non Fans don't get that
I thought you were going to explain it? The lack of explanation and the way the entire discovery twists/spins (looks too CGM) before using the spore drive are the only two things that drive me crazy with this series. (The saucer spinning is cool thought) Series overall is excellent. The writing and plot twists. Awesome!
DS9 episode Trials and Tribble-ations Worf notes that Klingons do not dicuss with outsiders why they look different in Kirks day vs TNG & DS9.
I'm no ST EU expert but I'd be curious to see what Discovery does with this and if this lot is eradicated or altered somehow.
As far as I'm concerned, they are NOT Klingons. They don't look like Klingons, they don't act like Klingons, they don't dress like Klingons, and their cultural ideas are a complete departure from what was established about the Klingons in previous Star Trek works (especially the movies and The Next Generation, the latter which fleshed out Klingon culture the most). I can accept them as possibly being an evolutionary offshoot, but they are definitely NOT Klingons to me.
They even speak Klingon haltingly & with a weird accent, like it's not their first language.
I totally agree! It’s not just that they don’t look like klingons, but there’s no similarities at all, in any way.
We can accept Romulans having been Vulcan, there was a way to achieve an explanation for the differences. I don't know why they insist on calling them Klingon.
Masterge77 I agree with everything you said apart from TNG fleshing them out the most. DS9 certainly did more to establish their species and culture.
the changes make them seem more real imo
Where's the explanation???
It's a different canon entirely.
I thought Discovery was the same canon as the New Movies with JJ. but there might be 3 canons going on now, not sure. (excluding comics n video games, cause those don't really truely count anyways.)
In other words, it's not really "Star Trek". It's its own Sci-Fi universe with a sloppy "Star Trek" veneer. They should have got someone else to produce it and did their own thing, like Orville did.
rpgspree couldn't agree more
Explained in Discovery DS9 made it a joke
I only watched the original crew. So if my theory is completely blown out of the water by new crew have pity..I recall Scott at least once talking about large amounts of radiation that the Klingon ships produce. So the longer they are in space the more mutation they will develop
I don't know why but I'd like to see Ash Tyler dropping "rappers delightish" song with his Klingon squad in a Klingon language
You talked about all the changes but not why they did this. In Enterprise they explained why the Klingons lost their ridges due to the augment virus. This is why the Klingos do not have ridges in TOS. ENT and TOS has the klingon story well explained....and all of a sudden a series that goes between them in the timeline has them looking completely different. So now they have to explain normal klingons, to lost ridges, to whatever these things are, to lost ridges, back to normal klignons. Seems like they are catering to the JJ Abrams crowd rather than the Star Trek faithful. Bad move. Oh, and if one Discovery shuttle sounds like a pod racer, am doing to drop kick my TV and send the bill to CBS.
Overall, I liked the explanation that John Ford created for the 'Klingons' supplement to FASA's Star Trek RPG -- that the Klingons created genetic fusions with both humans and Romulans, and these were the two 'races' of Klingons we saw in TOS, with the unmodified Imperial Race being what we saw beginning with the first movie.
dopeintegra83 I'm with you. How will they explain this? One of their scientists got carried away trying to change them back and they had to reintroduce the virus into their systems to save them? Or, if they had just let things go naturally, they'd be fine?
They shouldn't have changed the Klingons like that, but made them somewhere in-between as a link to TOS.
When I was at the Dragoncon Parade, I saw about 200 Star Wars fans in it. There were 2 classic NG Klingons, about 30 NG uniforms, about 5 from the original cast films, 0 new film or series uniforms, and 0 new Klingons. So, it seems catering to the "new fans" is fruitless. Fans make or break a series. And CBS fired the fans who were making STD. So happy they ended up on The Orville.
Actually it can be easily explained if optimistic Trek ever returns: the current iteration of Trek is so bad that it is not cannon. At least that's how I see it. Trek ended with Enterprise back in the 2000s.
Purple Klingons without hair?
The world has gone mad.
I used to have a thinkg for Klingon women. This destroys evereything :(
This is them trying to trick normies into thinking there are more than 2 genders.
They're the sugar plump fairies of the Klingon world
The only way this series' creators can earn some remote sliver of forgiveness, is to have the REAL Klingons show up with a rational explanation as to why these things are so different yet call themselves what they are not, the same way they did for the original smooth-forehead Klingons.
"Mostly the same since the 60s, except for minor design updates".
Smooth headed TOS Klingons: "Am I a joke to you?"
Kelvin Universe Klingons: "qatlhobqangbe'mo' jIHotlh'a'?"
The Next Gen Klingons will always look the Best, and CBS is screwing the fans over by making this an all access pay site, at least put it on NETFLIX which by the way everybody has, who the hell has CBS All Access?, nobody.
Too many subscription services! I'm maxed out at two. I won't get HBO Go but I can kind of understand it. CBS?!? Nope.
+Robert Holmes
What about DS9 Klingons?
Thai's the same thing that type of Klingon evolved from Star Trek the motion picture and Star Trek 3 the Search for Spock and they stuck with this template all this time until this new show Discovery which is by the way before Kirk but after Enterprise with all of this future tech?, they screwed up the Canon timeline and went with the Kelvin timeline which I am not a huge fan of, if its not broken don't fix it.
I had to ditch my Netflix for Crunchyroll. Just paying for the internet is almost too much for me.
Ok so you didn't explain shit
So you don't like the video, that's fair. No reason to cuss.
I can explain it for you. Black people. Thats it. Old klingons were all black people with stuff on their foreheads. And, because Hollywood had gone full SJW (the writers of this show even modeled the klingons after trump supporters), having klingons resemble black people, even thought they... ya know... aren't... is something that had to be changed. This show is going to tank harder than any other star trek have ever tanked. Worse than enterprise. Because as loud and fucking annoying as the screeching autistic left is, they are NOT sci-fi nerds. They drink craft beer and think vinyl records sound good for some reason. They aren't going to watch this. And completely fucking with the show to make them happy is going to completely alienate (no pun intended) ACTUAL trek fans that would have been the die hard fan base. And it keeps happening. Over and over and over. It's social engineering and fans hate it.
ATADEMO 100% agree
ATADEMO
just what the fuck does preference in beer and records have to do with political views or Star Trek?
Yeah, was about to comment and say this video explained NOTHING... shouldn't have titled it as "explained"
One explanation is that they're following on from the events seen in Enterprise. The failed attempt at creating Klingon augments led to they ridges being dissolved, what you see in discovery is the result of cosmetic alteration.
The uniforms remind me of the roof adornments on Thai temples.
They are blue. They are not Klingons no matter how much the producers say they are. Enough said.
Why not just make these creatures a new race and leave the Klingons alone? Perhaps since this is a prequel make a new antagonist that becomes extinct and is not present in later series.
+hackman669
"Why create a new diverse 'super hero' when we can simply add new diversifying traits onto an existing one!"
They're Klingons who sexually identify as Andorians. So they shaved everything and painted themselves blue and force everyone to call them something they're not.
@First Last LOLOLOL! :P
Give him an uppercut while he's stunned.
Man I'm mostly a Star Wars dude but I feel for you Trekkies wtf are they doing ?!
But why do you actually care? it's just asthetics, obviously if they changed the Klingons personalities into SJW's then it would matter. If anything the new costumes make them look more warrior like.
Yeah at least Disney is respecting the canon established by Lucas and expanding it. Roddenberry's canon is now a shredded piece of garbage. Gene's son Rod should be ashamed of himself for allowing his Father's legacy to be changed by people who don't understand it. All while getting that Executive Producer credit. Star Trek is dead to me.
Leeroy 808 if you don't get it now, you never will. P.S. fuck you
Pahricida ... well see there is a group of people called Jews, and they run the entertainment industry, and they don't like Christians or white heterosexual males who love their country, so they're doing everything they can to take a big shit and America's face.
Pahricida LOL DISNEY WARS NOW!
But Discovery is said to take place before The Original Series, plus a Klingon did appear in Enterprise which in the timeline takes place before Discovery.
The Klingon redesign is one of several unneeded and frankly upsetting things that straight up destroyed the entire prime timeline of Star Trek. I could rant about it forever. I really could.
C'mon CBS! Since when to all the Klingons look like burn victims?
The Orville is better. This new show is barely related to anything I recognize as "Trek."
Seth Trek
LOL
Corey Newman The Orville is good
Except the blatantly leftist agenda.
At least @@SmartAlx the agenda of Orville is nominal when compared with the COMPLETE UNLIKENESS of Discovery with ANYTHING Roddenberry would even call Star Trek. The WORST characters for a story I have ever seen. It is CLEAR that CBS HATES Star Trek and ALL TREKKIES! Everyone should band together to get that Star Trek hating CEO out of the picture or boycott CBS outright!
Let me say it'd be better if they explained the newest version as the original klingons that were infected by the virus. The human like klingons were the result of breeding with healthy members, and the still mutated ones are making a claim as their own distinct species. This would help with the whole house Mo'Kai reemergence in the "present", and why nobody questions the way they look compared to other klingons.
I appreciate the redesign, to be honest. I always felt like Star Trek aliens were too human-like. Even Vulcans and Romulans look very human, so having Klingons look different is just one step toward creating a more dynamic universe, in my opinion. Also I think the original Klingon design looked funky in a really bad way…
It is the biggest insult to every fan of the Klingons, I will never watch this piece of crap relaunch.
bring out thr dogs of war
don't watch it. You're not gonna get another kirk and another tos. this is what you're gonna get, either you're going to accept it or you're going to be regressed all your life. exactly the opposite of wonderful idea behind a crappy show.
Knight Moritz I am not a TOS fan, don't like Kirk, I am a TNG and DS9 fan and Klingon's are iconic in appearance these Klingon's look ridiculous and it changes everything the ship even looks stupid.
Knight Moritz Fuck that. CBS and Paramount don't own me. I will watch what ever the Fuck I want. If they can't make a show that I like in the settings l enjoy then I won't watch it. SO fuck CBS.
And for the record If the show bombs, CBS will still make Star Trek. It make a few years before some over in CBS gets it through their thick skulls to not piss off the fans and give them what they want.
The ship's look is actually a RODDENBERRY design from 1976. The Discovery is taking Gene's original drawings and using them
.
Any chance they can make a star trek film or series and stop FUCKING ABOUT WITH THE DESIGN OF SHIPS OR ALIENS!
just rerun tng already and fuck off
Agreed urs Myers. The producers, writers, designers, etc. don't realize that they will never turn Trek into a mass appeal behemoth like Star Wars, which isn't really science fiction but a science fantasy/space opera. Star Trek has always had a niche appeal to science fiction fans, nerds, geeks, technophiles, and people of higher IQs/intellects. In their quest to make more of the Almighty Dollar (an obsessive endeavor which has faded from human behavioral patterns by the time of Star Trek and its various iterations, by the way) they are alienating much of the core of the Trek fanbase.
Forgive me if I’m wrong but doesn’t Discovery take place in an alternate reality? So what if it’s just the Klingons in the new series just took a different evolutionary path then the ones we’re familiar with?
**If magic mushrooms can make them think their ship is faster than warp drive, maybe it can stretch far enough to make everyone hallucinate wrong looking Klingons?**
I guess they think as long as they slap the star trek name on it, we'll eat up whatever crap they shovel at us .
and this is no different. you bet we'll snarf it up
Ok, that explains why CBS won't show episode 2 next week after episode 1????
EXACTLY Nathaniel, the folks in follywood and new dork city think that Star Trek fans are fools dwelling in their grandmothers basements and are fool enough to buy anything they droll out, and it needs to be boycotted.
Doc Reasonable to some degree your right, even though (as in the case of the first movie) we didn't know it was crap until we had already seen it. At least with discovery, we can see enough after the first couple of episodes to know better.
It's a new Star Trek for a new generation of Trekkies. If you're a real fan then you'll love it no matter where it goes
P'Tagh! The redesign is so ridiculous, it's laughable! After over 35 years of the first change originally in TOS movies leading to TNG's Worf, then Voyager's B'Lanna, which that change originally for TOS movies was cool and expected and just what Roddenberry envisioned, it's asinine to change them so much that they look more like lizards with fish lips, without even the long, curly hair, much less no hair at all. So much for the hot-blooded Klingons! This show is being played pretty much only for Trekkies, hence only available on the paid CBS app, so why completely destroy something we have all come to know and love? Changing the Klingons to this degree has made EVERYONE angry! I'm so angry I'm speaking in run-on sentences! Yes, James MacLennan, "There... ARE... FOUR... lights!"
That's what they said in 1987. If only Gene would listen to the fans, they wouldn't bother with this awful awful remake that is just a betrayal of the original. The redesign of the ships, the redesign of the Klingons, it's all garbage.
To be fair, Voyager's B'elanna is half human.....
They need to stop ruining my childhood! First reboot was fun, just for nostalgia reasons. The rest sucked, this SUCKS!
So I stopped at episode 3 of STD, is there an explanation yet?
I saw a description but no explanation.
Sorry, but these new Klingons look like crap.
Space Prunes!
I agree, they look like talking turds.
Sovereign knight
Kinda still waiting for the explanation part of the video. Don't mean to sound negative but this was more of an observation.
I think it would look great if they added the hair the eyebrows and the Beards! Other than that I think it would have been a pretty cool design
Pre Augment dna look. Maybe they will add the augments in season 3
call paramount and complain everyone
Aw goddammit, so CBS felt desperate to redesign everything to let people know this is THEIR Star Trek. No...we want OUR Star Trek thanks!
Not to get technical but Paramount has the rights to any Trek made under the Bad Robot license they acquired in order to make the rebooted Kelvin timeline Trek; while CBS retains the rights to any Prime timeline Trek. Discovery is made under the Bad Robot license that is why despite whatever CBS wants to say it cannot be Prime Trek, Legally. Midnights Edge did a good breakdown, ua-cam.com/video/3I3y3_QmBsQ/v-deo.html
thanks for the clearification
I hate the new design of the kingons. I seen no reason for it and the new ones suck ass.
It seems so unnecessary to change a good concept. While the Klingons in TOS looked crappy their appearance improved a lot and was awesome and consistent during four series: TNG, DS9, VOY and ENT. I don't like to see that changed and wonder what Worf would say that these "new Klingons" are allegedly of the same race as he is? Nevertheless I do hope that I will get used to it and even like it.
I started watching discovery expecting star trek and was sadly disappointed. I watched this video expecting an explanation and again I was sadly disappointed
