I went to this hobby shop and saw FitE. He wanted 80 dollars and I offered him $40. He refused for a year then finally sold it to me for $40. Played it solitaire once and still own it 40 years later.
I still have my copy of Drang Nach Osten - its in the garage. I think i only ever set it up once and played for a few days with my comrades. I did love drooling over the counters in private.
It looks as though the original owner bought this from Excalibur Games (Arlington MA as commenter pointed out) on 7/19/1985 for $60USD with $3 tax, $70 cash offered with $7 change (?). Interesting to have the provenance. You might laugh but 100 years from now that receipt might be an important part of the item's value :). Yes, I've been watching too much Antiques Roadshow.
I loved Excalibur. I was Born in Arlington. They moved to Medford in the 80s. I left country for 19 years and when I returned the Boston hippies and Excalibur were long gone. So sad !
My absolute favorite wargame. I have played this multiple times over the last 40 years. The rules are tight, easy to learn. Just fun. There are a few house rules we use. 2d6 crt, a percentile die for odds determination. For example 2.8 to 1 ,You roll a 10 sided die and a 1-8 makes it 3 to 1. A few others, mostly from ETO or TEN . Grenadier magazine had some neat stuff too. Anyway I feel obliged to promote this game in the age of "Newer is always better". I do use Scorched Earth with it. I usually never need the Urals maps though.
In these days game producers were gamers first and business men second. It shows. What a game series. Also produced Norway invasion and invasion of France which I had.
Neat. Very good condition for something that old. Probably the first real monster wargame that I played back in the day. Agree that the GDW box graphic design format was oddly striking.
This was such a fun game. Great series, actually, assuming you have the space for the maps. These two get large. The off board corp/army sheets help a great deal.
Excalibur was a game shop and mail order place for all games. They were great. Sold older games at fair price pre eBay crap. I own this and DNO but lost DNO over twenty moves. I played in in Germany as a lieutenant in 1976. So DNO game is much older than 84 FIE I bought in the 80s at Ft Knox but never played it. Love these games.
Noticed you are going on a Europa acquisition frenzy. I just bought a bunch of titles myself (and ruined my pocket on the way) but focusing more on the GRD ones which look much better than the GDW editions. Not complaining nor envious (well....just a bit). Keep posting Ard! BTW....HMS website is already OOB...
Looks good sir. Great video as always sir. Enjoy. Got Marita Mekur. Box very dished. Wiped everything down n put all rules n such in page protectors, then a binder. One of my 50 plus games that I have not gotten to yet 😢. That number +-, never seems to change lately. I play three, four or five games and I buy three four or five or more games
Once again it is my privelege to be hit by that same wave of nostalgia, watching you unboxing this game. Seems identical to the one I had and such a sweet memory of my youth. Brigadelevel coverage of the Eastern Front - providing never ending play :) You find these on E-Bay, are these collector items nowadays? Do you have to pay so much that actually using the sets for playing is too economically wasteful? Or are they still sold as games to be played? This one was soiled and the maps seem worn but the counters aren't ppunched out so it hasn't been played right?

I still have my copy + sequels. Many many fond memories. OMG unpunched counter sheet!?!
thanks, old games are great!
I still own this and all the additions. The Winter War was a particular favorite. Nice trip down nostalgia lane. 👍

Excaliber was a Hobby shop in Arlington Massachusetts then Malden. The Hobby Bunker is its decendent

Well done on the video, now all you need is Scorched Earth! Just sold my 16 game Europa collection to Hexy.

I have Their Finest Hour in that format.

Played that over a summer back in 1990 or so. Was quite the undertaking, but as with all GDW games it was quite well made.

How can one own a game and NOT punch the counters? Inexplicable!
Soviet white units are winterized.
Played the early version (panzers roll in DNO) and FiE the is very good in my opinion. Good team game. Good fun alone. Shame GDW went under.
love the maps

So you have friends in your area that want to play this game. Think I need to move near to you!
