Korean music legends! Absolutely revolutionary in the early 90s. I still have all those albums my family had to send me to Europe when I was a teenager
I left you a long comment in your FM Business reaction, which you probably already saw. One thing to note about Taiji is that he sported different hairstyles over the years in his prime, including different color hair dyes. That includes his iconic Y2k-era heavy-metal red-colored cornrows he wore for a couple years. It is not a surprise that KPop groups since KPop began may have partly gotten inspired by dyeing their hair color because of Taiji. That includes BTS who have loved dyeing their hair over the years.
Every year, they put on a show on the album. (Milli Vanilli, beastie boys,Cypress Hill, korn style) The story of plagiarism a long time later. He(seo taiji) has his own unique mix. He can pull it off in his own style. so compliment you!!
Did you know that BTS performed LIVE with Seo Taiji in 2017 in their comeback concert (well, more like a reunion concert - one and only). It's pretty amazing.
@@Killdeer25 ... Yup, as I said in your FM Business reaction, that 2017 concert used to be up on that official YT channel for years until it got recently pulled down, probably months ago, maybe end of last year, because he is turning it into a cinematic movie. There is actually a 30-second trailer for that "new" movie up now on that channel. I should have downloaded that 2.5-hour concert years ago if I had known it was going to be taken down. Hindsight, lol. Fortunately there are still a few other full Taiji concerts in existence on YT, like the Quiet Night, After Party Club & Royal Philharmonic (rock orchestra) gigs & others, each over an hour long.
Can't really understand K-pop without Seo Taiji's catalog. He really played in every genre, most notably the hip-hop era with Yang Hyun-suk [that YG] and Lee Juno. Story is that they performed Nan Arayo on an MBC music show (1992) and received the worst ranking in the show's history. Next day, every music store in Korea sold out of Seo Taiji and the Boys material.
Wow! That's quite the history, I definitely knew going into this that this wouldn't be the end all be all of the story for sure but I didn't know YG was part of this, that'd crazy!
He's referred to as the father of Kpop but he's as indie as it gets. That's YG on drums by the way, one of the Big 3 (Kpop companies that controlled everything until BTS destroyed everything). It helped me to understand that SK achieved democracy in 87. This means when Western music came in it came with MTV. The visuals and the video are as important as the music itself. My favorite is Come Back Home. Thanks for looking into this! 💜
One thing to be aware of though, is that western music had already been migrating over to Korea back in the 19th century. So that's about 150+ years of western music in Korea as of 2023, long before Korea split politically & then also afterwards. The big thing about Taiji & Boys is that he magnified US hiphop in Korea, something that the Korean public at large did not know much about back in the early 1990s. I say he magnified it, because I'm sure Hiphop was already playing there but maybe by very few listeners. In the US, hiphop was still sort of new as well, only beginning in the early 1970s, & only 2 decades old by the time it came to SK by the early 1990s. Of course, rock & metal music, a western invention as well, had already been playing in Korea since the 1950s, when rock began, because US soldiers brought it over during those years with the conflicts of Communism. Even Korean Trot music is actually western, as it evolved from Foxtrot, a popular form of jazz of the early 20th century, partly brought over from US by way of Japanese colonial rule. And I do not think many people realize that Taiji & Boys played in the style of hiphip-rock, or rap-rock, rather than just pure hiphop all the time, because Taiji is firstly a rock musician. That is why Taiji was easily able to transition into Nu-metal because that style itself is really rapping over metal. Plus he included the turntable scratching a lot as part of his instrument mix. Of course, with that music style, he also included socio-political commentary in his lyrics & that too was what resonated with Korean youth of that time, because he spoke out about stuff that no one else was brave to say publicly. Yes, there were indie artists who also spoke out a little, iirc. That is the same reason why BTS also became huge, because of their commentary about social issues & whatever. I mean if you look at other KPop groups since Taiji (Taiji is not KPop himself of course, as we know), I do not think social commentary was prevalent in their lyrics, because of fear of cancel culture in the past quarter century, until BTS came along, since they were very different from the rest of KPop prior. Taiji & BTS have both gotten backlash & censoring over the course of their careers & that too is what made both of these artists related to each other. Oh yeah, Taiji & Boys also became hugely popular by including hiphop choreography, such as breaking. So all those things... rap, rock, deep lyrics, choreography, instrument-playing, fashion & whatever else I missed, turned into a perfect storm for him & his group in the early 90s, as a whole new idea that that young generation was waiting for after many decades of Korean trot, ballads & traditional Korean music.
@@brayonne1755 ... No problem, most of my comments all over youtube are long because I like to incorporate as much info as possible into one comment, heh. There are still so much more info about Taiji though, but at the same time I don't know everything about Taiji, lmao.
He's unique 90's Korean musician, He's basically the very first pioneer of K-POP and K-Idols, which are taking over the world right now. but also he was all into metal and hip-hop, and he totally weaves them into his music. So, he's got this whole idol group vibe that makes girls go wild, but at the same time, he's rocking the look of a '90s alternative metal and hip-hop band. It's kind of a cool mix, but also a bit in-between Actually, when it comes to his musical style, especially in the metal scene, he's faced a ton of criticism for being seen as an 'idol imitating metal' and not having enough depth. Even so, compared to the super soft tunes of typical K-idols, especially those current K-pop boy bands aiming for the girl crowd, Seo Taiji and Boys really stand out with their mix of metal and hip-hop. It's kinda cool how they're the distant ancestors of BTS. Very strange. Anyways, I'm stoked you picked this song. Personally, I reckon it's the absolute best among all his music.
This is his best? It's very wild! I did see one of his metal songs I thought it was pretty legit. I think that it kinda makes sense, it always takes someone bold to move music forward
I believe I heard something like that, he was president of culture, this song is pretty awesome, so I dont think you could even think of the impact this had! haha yes! Killdeer is a bird :D
i think he copied from here and there and mixed then arranged while there was no internet 30 years ago. so once he was so many korean's music god but now just a thief.

I also love how they have that Beastie Boys vibe blending into a kinda Soundgarden sound.

Fun fact: before Kpop, Seo Taiji is a original Rock Artist when he was member of Oldest Korean Rock Band called "Sinawe" as Bassist back then
ohh! thats awesome!
