I'm not sure what was going on either but they were sure into their roles! I think several of them are actors. I know for sure that Eunkwang and Changsub have done musicals but I think Sungjae and Hyunsik might have too. And for sure Sunjae has done dramas.

I mean what's not to like about Peniel? He did a nice job. I'm a big fan of Junny though. They host a youtube show/podcast together with BM from Kard and Ashley who I'm not sure what group she's in but they are all English speaking artists and they talk about life and interview people on their show called Get Real from Dive Studios. Junny is a Canadian singer/songwriter who got his break in college where he was studying music production and was writing songs in his parents' basement and posting them on Soundcloud. Somehow, former EXO member Luhan discovered him and asked him for a song. After that he decided to move to Seoul on his own and try and make it in the kpop industry and he did! He got in with SM's song camp and wrote a song for Suho, then Kai and Baekhyun, NCT even IU. Then he eventually signed with a company and debuted himself as a solo artist.

i think he copied from here and there and mixed then arranged while there was no internet 30 years ago. so once he was so many korean's music god but now just a thief.

I'm coming up on the second anniversary of my mom passing away in a couple weeks, and this song is hitting me really hard today.

Ya, that heel-toe movement was the bomb. Frankly, I never notice it until I was watching someone do a dance cover of this. You really see how much it stands out when someone doesn't do it.

All the best parts of AKMU were put into this song.

Agreed, this is one of the best OWC yet. Curious what your top 5 is. As much as I love when we do EXO and groups I already love, my favourites have been discovering great new groups so my Top 5 in no particular order would be Infinite, TXT, TVXQ, 2NE1 and now AKMU. Even though a lot of AKMUs music I wouldn't go back to on a daily basis, I feel like their presence in the industry is probably only going to make kpop and music in general better. We need to make as much room as we can for young people who are truly artists and not just push them into manufactures groups with a short shelf life. I agree with @kl2894 that if Suhyun had been in an average girl group she would have been so limited, just one of hundreds of girls with a pretty voice that she wasn't able to reach the true potential of because she'd have been limited by a few lines each song and how well she fit the beauty standards etc. Thanks again for another fantastic OWC Aaron!

I keep saying it but I really, really want a fairytale film written, directed and scored by Chanhyuk starring and sung by AKMU. Like no pressure guys, just do the entire thing. 😅

He has so much talent and not to be mean to girl groups because there's some very good ones, but I think that music wise, Suhyun wouldn't have had a chance to reach her full potential if she'd gone down the standard girl group route. Being in a duo with an artist like her brother has given her a chance to really broaden her musical horizons.

This is off their Sailing album which is all water themed, so I always just assumed it was pronounced like shanty, as in sea shanty.

I like the guitar in this. I'm not sure I would necessarily call this the blues though. To me it's a bit more of a pop rock sound than they usually have, maybe slightly verging on rockabilly, but I don't know about it being the blues. Changmin's Devil definitely had a blues/gospel element though.

The original version of the song means a lot to J Hope. Making a remake of one of the songs that inspired him as a child and motivated him to find his passion must be a great honor for him. And of course J Hope and Becky G pulled it off brilliantly.

I get what you're saying and I wonder if it has to do with how kids aren't exposed as much to music in school anymore. I mean when I was a kid in the 80s, music was mandatory curriculum in elementary school. We learned basic music reading, sang songs that taught us scales and simple harmonies, experimented with all kinds of instruments. Even I, who never took up anything music related after that, have a basic appreciation of how music is put together using the basic building blocks of physical instruments and human voice. But by the time I was in high school, even elementary school music programs were elective only and eventually cut altogether so most kids don't get that kind of education anymore unless they go out of their way to learn it on their own extracurricularly and their parents can afford it. At least here in Canada unless that has changed again. I don't have kids so I am out of touch with what they learn these days. But the software and technology to make music electronically is more widely available to anyone who is interested in learning how to use that regardless of their access to traditional music theory, learning to play an instrument or taking vocal lessons so a whole generation of people who didn't have access to the kind of learning I had, still learned a way to make music with games like guitar hero and basic mixing software. From what I understand, AKMU's parents were missionaries and they self taught themselves music out of boredom living in remote places. Whereas I imagine a lot of producers out there today had less exposure to traditional music teaching but self taught themselves on software mimicking the music they heard being produced. Totally different approaches. Could explain why AKMU write songs that's grounded more in traditional music theory where a lot of producers make songs based on mixing and sampling and techniques that arise from the use of software. Just my musings as a person who doesn't do anything musically at all except listening and habitually watching the behind the scenes of artists recording.

They have so many pretty songs! Loved your commentary on this one, and totally agreed with what you were saying about fantasy and overdone-ness. I've been kinda bored with fantasy these last few years and this is why. It's like the magic and rareness of the magic is gone and now everyone just tells stories that could be 100% set in reality but everyone just happens to have a superpower. Like I get the reasoning behind giving magical beings real world problems to get your message and life lessons across while appealing to an audience that has been raised on fantasy and superhero stories. But the bleeding of these genres has made everything generic. No one appreciates beautiful stories set in the real world with dialogue and subtlety of emotions anymore and also the magic and wonder has gone from fantasy as well.

call me crazy, but gives a vibe of "never ending story" at the beginning when the tempo is kind of similar, of course it's different key and this song is much more complicated. But gives a similar vibe. I'm adding this to a new playlist. Thanks
