The D25 seems to have a slightly thicker low end here. In your experience is this just variation from one capsule to another?

This can sometimes be the case based on when the microphone was made. I’ve had early D25’s that have different parts than the later D25’s. Overall, the design of the capsule is the same, but I have found that later D25’s tend to have more low end as they started to cater the microphones more to kick drum. Unfortunately it’s tricky to know the age of the microphone without looking inside! Regardless, I do like how they all sound.

Would have been great if you had a D30 as well.

D20 and D25 have transformers, generally the D20 does not. The transformer provides for a more even response and arguably, a better tonal quality. Occasionally D20s can also be found with transformers.
