This video shows the restoration process behind a rare Shaftesbury RT Ribbon Microphone (made in England in the 1960's) and National WM-706 Ribbon Microphone (made in Japan in the 1960's). It's likely that I won't have another Shaftesbury ribbon on my bench ever again, and the National ribbon has a unique motor that makes for a bright sounding ribbon. I sell microphones like these every week on...

Texture And Vintage Microphones: Track #12
Thanks for this video , I have a melodium 42b and I’m wondering what eq settings I should use for vocals ? Thanks
which acoustic guitar is this? that gibson sounds beautiful
It’s a 1957 Gibson LG-3! Thanks!
Ribbon definitely sounds better, also RCA BK5 was used on In Utero
That Acoustic is the real winner!
That 360 really does sound ridiculous.
just gorgeous on my 0.62 scale Karlson/B102 topped with PRV compression driver on a 9 inch long 3D printed "K-tube"
that acoustic guitar part was beautiful
I use a lot of 1960s-1980s mics in my home studio. AKG c28a &b, c60, Shure UniDyne and SM57.
I love the darkness of the SK-46s, but damn those 160s sound sweet!
That windscreen filtering really makes a difference, how cool! They all sounded great/useable.
This might just have convinced me to use my BK1a for something other than a talkback mic. Although I did throw it on snare when I first got it....definitely worked!
What preamp are you using for the mics?
The AEA RPQ2!
@ Can I just use a Fethead? Or do you recommend something more specific?
M260s closely followed by the M160
I thought the varacoustic sounded better on the guitar. The 77 was a little brighter. I have the former and might just geek the high end a little to get closer to the 77.
Great video.
just go with 2 new Shure SM-57's and call it a day bro! :)
I'd like to hear that for reference, you may be right
LOVED the RCAs
M160s for me! Cool selections though
m260
Loved the sound of the D19's, although it's a very specific thing. Beyer 160s for a more versatile sound, if that makes sense.
260’s we’re pretty sweet too
Nice, again the 160’s.
For me, the first two were close, but my order of preferene is 1) M260 2) M160 3) D19 4) SK-46. The M260 is just that bit smoother and natural than the M160, though in a mix, it's very possible the M160s would be preferable. I guess better to have the exteneded bright high-end, and roll it back, than try to boost to recover / artificially create it.
Love this series! Best mic a/b testing I've found. So helpful for hearing the differences in character between mics.
Thanks for saying that!
M160s!
M160
older M260 (without hi pass filter) like the ones here are fantastic mics, I own a pair too and they are usually my 1st pick for overheads, I own a vintage M160 too
It’s still the M-160s for me. I like the overall balance and the sound of the ride.
Uh oh those 260s are 🥵 (Sincerely, owner of 160s)
Yip agree, and I wouldn't want it to be this way, but I think the m260s won this round. Though the M160 still sounded great. I kind of liked the AKG D19s for that breakbeat on vinyl kind of tone, it's a little range restricted and slightly mid-fi, but has a nice character and bite. Those RCAs might make a good 'Wurst' / trash / crotch mic.
I mean of course it depends on the track, but I love the sound of those d19s!!!
Man these sounded great. Really liked the guitar/bass tones.
Great video. Not too much chat and proves a good point. The vintage one just sounds sweeter and not cloudy and bloated.
U inspired me to buy a few ,opened up a new world
Wow, that's amazing, just beautiful 💜💜
Can't tell you the difference
Ive been watching alot of your videos and really enjoying them! I feel like most microphones would sound "good" in these scenarious given that the instruments, mic placement and playing are top notch, and looks like beautiful preamps as well. Its cool to get a feel for the "colors" of the mics though, because "good" is subjective at the end of the day :)
your vintage mic videos are so lovely
for me the M380 works best inside the drum, with nearly equal distances to the skins....
Great! What preamps are you using?
do you do much post processing, EQ or anything here? the extra instruments particularly sound so amazingly clear!
There’s no EQ or any other plug-in’s on any track!
Original Sound❤
It’s just unbelievable how that mic sounds!
I wish we were friends and neighbors and we could hang out and record with amazing vintage mics. This sounds amazing!
Magnificent as always ! Cheers from Canada.
unreal
Can you let us know some of the hardware you’re using to color the microphones in this video? They sounds beautiful!
this shit so fire .pfff
great video my g. I am subbing

Would like to see a vintage AKG comparison with these and the c451e, d224e and d19.
