After watching you struggle with the math I immediately asked my ABC husband to calculate the price difference. He was so confused and after quite a long time he gave me a wrong answer 😂thanks for the laughter
Her calculations were wrong. Regarding the price that was five times more expensive, it was impossible for the merchant to go to China to purchase ingredients, and it was impossible to hire Chinese employees to Australia. The merchant did not increase the price.

This video legit moved me as I've once been living for years several stories right above this place :') Used to go there on a regular basis and made me discover malatang in the first place (got hooked straight away). Such a heartfeel to see it and the surrounding area!
It's interesting how you showed in Dongbei that they add the sauces directly for you, and when you were DIY-ing in this video, you added the sauces directly into the broth. For me (from Singapore), and how I always thought it was, is that you add the sauces on a sauce dish as a dipping sauce. So usually I drink the broth by itself and if i want to, i dip my ingredients in the sauce I had concocted haha. I shall try to add it to the broth next time to see how it is!
Your dad is just so silly and lame in the best way! I can't 😂😂 Love him so much. That "mala tongue" pun was genius. I wish my dad would have a tiny bit of those qualities when he interacts with me. We have the zhang liang malatang here in Singapore too! Prices go at $2.98 per 100 grams with a minimum order of 300 grams. Mala has been a trend in Singapore for a couple of years and you can easily find it at any coffee shop! Most charge based on the category of food like vegetables usually go by maybe $2-3 per 100 grams and meat could be $4 per 100 grams or even $1.60 per 50 grams across vegetables and you have to get it by that portion size. Mala is definitely not cheap in Singapore despite its popularity and how accessible it is but I would say they taste similar all over. Would love to see Amy try and compare the Singapore zhang liang malatang to Sydney and China! Definitly try out the coffee shop versions as well, its a good idea to ask for 少油少盐 as it is flavourful and oily by default.
Yes, some of the Chinese restaurants brand are way cheaper in China than other countries. One of the examples might be Sha-xian(沙县), looks like a luxury restaurant decorated with lanterns, ancient Chinese stuff, and screens showing documentaries in Chinatown London, and the price was also high. However, in China, this brand is more like street food or fast food, similar to KFC or McDonald's.
It's the same brand. In addition to ordering and enjoying the prepared food, you can also buy some prepackaged food similar to instant noodles in the luxury version of sha-xian in London. The logo on the box is the same as that of fast food styled Sha-xian restaurants in China.

As a person from Singapore. Where people think our city is expensive, I’m always appalled by the food prices in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and Perth. Foodcourt food is easily 3-4 times the price. It’s just crazy.
This is entirely a function of things like the relative purchasing power parity, local wages etc. Directly converted between CNY and AUD, the meal in the video is something like 6x the price it is in Sydney. This makes Australia seem pretty "expensive" at first glance. However, when you compare an average annual salary in Jilin, China (~100,000 CNY, ~21,000 AUD) and in Sydney, Australia (~390,000 CNY, ~$82,000 AUD), the difference in cost between the two locations isn't all that much for your average person. It's six times the price but something like 2/3 of that difference is immediately offset by local wages. This also ignores things which are a bit more intangible such as food quality standards, the value of public services provided by each location's VAT (included in the price) etc., all of which likely bring the real value of the two locations' meals a lot closer to parity. The rest is really just a rounding error. These are all rough numbers; but I've done my best to find ones which are recent, reasonably accurate, and comparable. Having previously lived in China and enjoyed the privilege of my overseas savings going a LONG way due to a favourable exchange rate, I completely understand the sentiment that China is far better value than an equivalent meal/experience in a wealthier and more expensive part of the world. Honestly, I miss it. Once outside that expat edge case, however, and when comparing apples to apples, the reality can be quite different. This nuance is often missed given the brevity of a UA-cam video or blog post and given the fact most people will do little more than a direct currency conversion; but it is essential to fully understand the situation. TLDR: Zhangliang malatang (tasty stuff!) is marginally more expensive in Australia than in China when adjusted for PPP.
True. I'm also from one of those "cheap" countries, and it irks me whenever foreigners refuse to acknowledge their privilege - that superior exchange rate. (Not to mention those who rants about slavery because wages are so "cheap", too). That said, food in China is cheap even from my point of view, because their prices are similar and sometimes even lower than average here, while the annual salary for minimum wage in my capital city is only roughly 30.000 cny.
Hi, Amy. You should come to Singapore 🇸🇬 and eat at the local food hawker centres and try all sorts of food including the popular MALATANG😋😋😋😋🤤🤤🤤🤤and compare those with the ones in China.🇨🇳 Even though I know you might have been to Singapore 🇸🇬 before, but it gives you a good comparison 👍👍👍👍👍
I live in an area with no immediate access to any Malatang place. Inspired by your adventure in Sydney, now I am mixing fine peanut butter with Laoganma and sichuan green pepper /majiao, along with some veggies, pressed doufu, shrimp and sweet potato vermicelli, into a Campbell mushroom soup base. Let’s see how this goes. 😅

@@RUHappyATM Don´t forget the rent, insurance, taxes and electricity which are more expensive in Sydney too. And to top it of the selection of food was better in Sydney.
The labor cost alone is 10 times higher in Australia, then there are costs of food, rent, materials, taxes, insurance, utilities, etc, all much higher in Australia.
@@firstlast-pt5ppwhy it should be better if cost is higher because of what mentioned above? It cannot be lower because of what is mentioned above. Not to forget that Australia is far away from everything and everything is more expensive there.
In fact, China's price consumption is not high. Houses are not in big cities now, only 200,000 to 300,000 yuan per set, that is, many labor incomes are not high.
If you are comparing price dollar to dollar with different currency between CNY and AUD, you can just use the conversion rate as explanation on how many folds of the price. For example AUD1=CNY 4, it means Australia is 4 times more expensive on everything they can get. Only apply for currency conversion with single digit conversion

It's really new refreshing to see a aussie girl in Asia China, most of the times you always get bad media in australia towards China, especially in the west u.s. Keep up with the great videos.
OMG Amy, you're getting married in Bali?! 🌴✨I’m literally screaming because I'm a big fan from Indonesia!!!
I hope you're ready to fall in love with our sunsets, food, and... humidity, lol.
Pretty please sprinkle in some Indonesian food content if you can - Babi Guling, Ayam Betutu, Martabak, maybe even some Durian?
Wishing you all the best for your big day! 🥂💍💖
I never skip your sponsored moments - so well done!

So much fun. The best food episode this is.
Amy should put dad's merch on her website. It'll probably sell better than she expect since he has a lot of fans too.
Your dad is a crack up and your maths struggles are so relatable 😂
