You can’t over emphasizes how huge a win that was for Duke Football. They have the brand and the fans , you saw the field storming. This was a statement win and potential program building win
Dabo needs his cage rattled. And make no mistake about it, he’s been Clemson’s greatest coach in program history. But at this juncture, I think it’s fair to ask what was Dabo’s actual role in their success vs. what was actually Venables, Scott, Deshaun Watson, Trevor Lawrence etc.
That doesn’t seem fair. Those key pieces that you mentioned were recruited/hired by Dabo because he knows what it takes to win national championships. Consistency is hard because good players and coaches are constantly being poached. There’s going to be times where filling those gaps in talent and coaching isn’t possible right away. Dabo just needs time.
@austincapps4381 good luck with that because teams are using NIL and transfer portal to have immediate success and him refusing to do both of those things is what will have him be left behind and die on the side of the road.
Notre Dame fans are fully aware of Mike Elko and his coaching abilities. Without that hire from Brian Kelly, Notre Dame and their stout defense year under Elko, and for years afterwards, ND may still be struggling. Without Elko, A&M never beats Bama. I’ve known his time was coming.
Clemson has gotten worse as a team season by season since that historic 2018 squad that went 15-0 and dominated Alabama 44-16. The issues they’ve had along the OL and at WR started showing up in 2020. Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne were such great players that they overcame those issues for the most part, but even they couldn’t against Ohio State. Since Trevor left, Clemson’s issues have become more clear and Dabo’s unwillingness to embrace college football in 2023 has magnified them further.
This is 100% correct. And hiring buddies and former players that have little or no D-1 level coaching experience is killing the program. Austin, Reed, Richardson, Conn, Goodwin, and Grisham are perfect examples of an inner circle giving the wrong advice. Time for Dabo to wake up before the house he built is burnt to the ground.
Unless you’re plugged in to the Clemson program most people don’t know the real issue… Streeter wasn’t the only internal hire with no experience. Most of the position coaches and assistants are all internal hires with no experience. It shows they can’t develop the blue chips because these coaches don’t know how. Going to the portal won’t do anything if they don’t have the coaches to get the best out of the players. Dabo also needs to let Riley coach the offense without his input and clean out the rest of the staff.

As a Clemson fan, I wouldn't say I'm panicking as much as I am resigned to the fact things change all the time and that includes the teams at the top. I appreciate what Clemson was, is, and I look forward to seeing the next time Clemson is on the rise. Unfortunately the rampant free agency created by the portal, conference realignments via TV revenues and NIL I think is going to make college football worse before it gets better.
I don't like where college football is going either but if Dabo doesn't come to his senses and utilize the transfer portal Clemson will remain in the shadow realm with more shellackings to come.
I do agree that Dabo is likely going to either go “all in” as he would say or he is out. Honestly, he just doesn’t look like he has the heart for it. He’s not the same guy I remember watching hoist that first trophy up or the one that was maintaining a positive attitude when he was first building the program up. He’s not taking the same kind of accountability as before and he doesn’t seem to care win or lose. I just get the feeling that he has nothing left to give this program.
@@alonzokincaid1362 as a fan, I’d hate to see him go though and I don’t think he’s done enough to deserve that. We still are having 9-10 win seasons. You cannot ask much more without expecting your program to be elite. I’ve watched this team since I was a teen. I’ve seen them far worse under Bowden and even before then. I cannot complain about a random 6-6 season if that happens. Clemson is not Alabama, FSU, Texas, or Georgia. And tbh idc if we lose and they keep him. I detest these bandwagoners that took us from cinderella story to one of the most hated programs and fanbases in college football. This has as much or more to do with the other teams in the conference getting better, then Clemson's drop in play. So many years with Strength of Schedules that gave them an average opponent ranking in the 60's, they arrived at season's end not only with a good record from the lack of opposition, but also with the players in good health. Quite an advantage, when teams arriving at the CFP having played against 4-6 Top 20 teams and in some cases 4 top 10 teams.
(Clemson Fan/Alum) - The bigger problem has been Dabo's good ole boy approach... there are way too many former players (with little to no previous experience) as position coaches. The "promote from within" approach didn't work. There are also too many kids on scholarship that aren't D1 players but are children of Dabo's former friends, teammates, coaches kids. Dabo doesn't plan for attrition well and instead of using the portal, we give scholarships to walk ons... we basically have a self imposed roster sanction. It was covered up by generational talent, but is now coming to light. I don't see dabo ever changing his ways, so he'll drag Clemson down till they have to let him ago... which is sad a way to end such a great story.
This reminds me of Florida’s fall from Grace. They went from being a national championship winner and contender to a below average, run of the mill team in the conference.
Here’s the difference: Florida’s fall from grace atleast coincided with the emergence of the greatest dynasty in CFB history in their own conference. The ACC is only now starting to have another top program in FSU, Clemson’s decline began before FSU’s rise even started.
We had a relative go to Duke back during the 1985-86 basketball season (37-3) where they lost in Finals. *He sent lots of pictures of Campus, Cameron Arena, Stadium, etc. PRETTY MUCH ALL OF THE HOODIES, JACKETS, & OUTERWARE HAD THE OLD ENGLISH PRINT. Absolutely! As a Clemson fan, I’ve been skeptical of how Dabo has adapted the last few years. You are absolutely correct when you said this was years in the making. Hoping this year will be the kick in the pants that wakes him up otherwise we’ll go 8-4 a few years and it’ll be time to move on. He’s won 2 national championships. He’s earned the time to see what he can do. He’s had 3 good years. He’ll get a couple more but if things don’t change…
Gotta adapt to the modern sport, not wish it was what it once was. His refusal to use the portal and bashing NIL has led the team to this current predicament.
Josh spittin fax! Dabo my indeed retire. If he does, I hope we give Riley a shot! Whatever happens, I NEVER EVER EVER want to see Clemson look like that again. That was extremely painful to watch. Go Tigers! 🐾🐾
It was The Twilight Zone for Clemson. Anything that could have gone wrong…did. Duke looked good, no doubt. But Clemson isn’t as bad as they looked. I think they’ll rebound and have a good season.
I get that the story has to be about Clemson, and it should be. But you have to give credit to Duke and Elko. They had a 9 win season in his first year, and now this. Up and comers.

But some serious culture and philosophy change needs to happen. Great take Josh.
Never have i seen a game where a team had it 1st and goal 4 separate times and came away with zero points. Clemson was something like 150-0 under Dabo when they have 200 yards passing and 200 yards rushing. Without a doubt, strangest game ive ever seen.
Ive been saying for year all the success was due to having Watson and Lawrence at qb and Venables as dc. Clemson is just reverting back to what they’ve always been under dabo lol
Just because the transfer portal has given teams an advantage this year, doesn't mean it will in future. Many things could happen, including quality, experienced players not being available in the quantity they are in the first few years. Daboo thinks he can stay true to principles and they are the best from Clemson. He doesn't have to leave, but he needs to acknowledge he's taking a different path. Like always, will come down to wins if successful.
I love when Duke leans into the Old English fonts for their uniforms. The basketball jerseys with the darker shade of blue and the OE Duke across the chest is fire.
Duke was so underrated going into the season. Look at what they did last year. Lost 4 games by a total of 16pts. Easily could've gone 10-3 last season or 11-2.
All the 4 & 5 Stars at Clemson are still playing like they did in High School, instead of progressing as Elite College players. As a Georgia fan, it’s been great seeing Elite HS players getting better, but also the 2 & 3 star players turning into Elite College players. We have a ton of 4 & 5 star players, but the difference in us is that we develop all recruits to be better.
It does kind of feel adapt of die for Dabo and I agree that he's just as likely to say I don't want to adapt to the new way so I'll ride off as he is to change and that's ok. Just be able realize it once it is upon you and be ready hit the eject button yourself rather than dying a thousand deaths... it might already be that time for Dabo.
I don’t understand what the transfer portal has to do with Clemson’s current situation….. especially when you mention the discrepancy between 4/5 stars on Duke vs Clemson.
Yep, and he’s made poor hires since then instead of finding proven and experienced coaches he brought in friends and former players that haven’t proven anything at this level. Coaching experience prior to Clemson Wes Goodwin: First coaching job CJ Spiller: First coaching job Tyler Grisham: First coaching job Lemanski Hall: First coaching job Kyle Richardson: High school Mickey Conn: High school Thomas Austin: 2 years at Georgia State
To put his into perspective: This 21-point win was Duke's largest over a ranked opponent since claiming a 34-0 victory over No. 9 Colgate in 1942. Got that? 1942! 81 years ago. WWII.
As an outsider/non-fan looking into Clemson, Dabo is a fantastic motivator. He used the “they don’t respect us” during the early years as motivation, but he never changed. You could say coordinators left, which is a solid argument, but motivation is key when playing an inferior team. They lacked it. If they execute, could easily handled them irrespective of play call . Unpopular opinion: Clemson was never challenged during the year. Typically, they were in the 40s for strength of schedule. That’s silly and bad for the people who have to play them in the playoffs since they were mostly playing warm ups all year, but you lost to a warm up team. No bueno
EVERY school that reaches the top thinks it will never end LOL... and they ALWAYS do eventually. As an FSU fan...we were definitely at that point after Bowden and Jimbo... and guess what?
I just noticed that if Colorado beats Nebraska this weekend and beat Colorado State the weekend after that we’ll be potentially talking about a game of the week against Oregon. Both teams can be 3-0 going against each other which is going to definitely draw national attention… this football season couldn’t have gotten any better 😎🍿
I picked Duke in the upset but think Clemson may still win 10 games. New offensive coordinator, first start for Klubnik, away from home on a Monday night against an experienced Duke QB. Don’t sleep on Duke. They may win 9 or 10 games too.
I’ll save my comments until FSU because that’s their opportunity to respond and it’s only fair to give them a chance to clean it up before we all cry about it.
Yep I see him coming out especially if they lose again and announce his retirement but if they win he’ll announce it to just a few that need to know and will wait for the final game for the official announcement in my opinion
It hurts my feelings but parity in the ACC is good for the conference. Clemson looked like they hadn't prepared all off season. It's a make or break year for Dabo/Clemson. This is either the beginning of the end or the start of reformation.
Good win for Duke. The teams looked even on the field more often than not, so that isn’t good for Clemsons roster / play calling. Riley & Cade better get the act tougher the next 2 weeks, or the home game against FSU will be embarrassing..
The whole scouting high school talent with stars has some huge deficiencies.. Sometimes they get it right but alot of good talent does not get recognition
Nah, that’s factually incorrect according to very good data. The HS recruiting accuracy is better than it ever has been. It’s not 100% and never will be, but the correlation between 4* & 5* athletes making it to the NFL is at an all time high.
I disagree a little bit with how to fix this program. Clemson has its most blue-chip players ever, for example (rather than "need the portal" for talent), plus Clemson build the first-of-its-kind NIL institute, & some extra TV revenue is likely incidental for determinant success when *IPTAY (Clemson's funding arm) alone raised a quarter-billion last year.* I think it's easy to blame those things, it's just inaccurate is all, & it's harder to admit the problems are simply deeper when it comes to development.
As a Georgia fan I don't think it's time for Clemson to completely panic - for almost three quarters that game and the Georgia trip to Columbia, MO were very, very similar. The main difference was the Georgia offense got off the mat late in the 3rd quarter and Duke got the 4th quarter defensive score on the goal line that almost certainly would have seen Georgia lose had Missouri been the beneficiary of something similar. That was an immediate 14-point swing. The offense needs work, but it's not time to flip the board yet.
@@brianritchey7923So...let's just say Ohio State made their final field goal and Georgia made the other two they missed. Is the result of the game any different? Ohio State should've won that game, but that's the beauty of college football and what makes it so exciting to watch.
Hell even Good Ole Kirk from my beloved Iowa Hawkeyes went to the portal and scooped up Cade, and he may be the most stubborn coach in all of sports currently 😂
I'm not saying Dabo wouldn't benefit from employing the portal, but I also see Pate's argument as a bit too simplistic, in my opinion. The reasoning seems to turn in on itself. He just got done saying Clemson's 56-2 advantage over Duke in number of 4 & 5 start roster players necessitates that we assume either that the entire recruiting industry's ratings are entirely out of whack, OR that they aren't being developed well once on campus. That calculus seems spot on. And the most reasonable inference from there seems to be that, while recruiting rankings may not be flawless, they probably aren't faulty to the point of accounting for the bulk of that 56-2 deficit, ergo, Clemson has a development/coaching problem of some sort(s), and not a talent deficiency. If that's the case, then how does the transfer portal "solve" that issue? It can patch holes and work as a supplement or stop-gap, etc., but that's different than closing a broad-based, generalized talent gap (that doesn't even exist). The 56-2 point is tantamount to asserting that Clemson doesn't have a talent insufficiency. If that's the case, the portal will just be a redundancy that won't address the problem of development and coaching. A quick aside. I do know portal talent will come with some pre-baked development of the players who transfer in - so I'm not suggesting the portal can't contribute in some significant way. like I said above - supplement, stop-gap, fill holes, shore up, etc. But, if Clemson is not lacking talent generally, then the portal won't be any sort of panacea. So yeah, I think Dabo should use the portal, but unfortunately, the problems seem deeper and worse than that.
FSU fan here and I have to say no way. It's one game, game one against a good team with some turnovers im bad spots. Clemson might be down some this year but I doubt the bottom has fallen out.
Check your facts Josh ( im on a roll lol) Coleman’s first choice was fsu but he didn’t want to risk his eligibility because we were starting a rebuild and COVID just broke out! He came home baby GO NOLES
Love LateKick! As far as the transfer portal, the reason Dabo won't use it is because he recruits based on the character and values of the players and not just on ability. You might get a quality player, even a difference maker for the team but since Dabo does not necessarily know this player or his values he won't take a transfer portal player because it might negatively effect the culture of the program which is unashamedly a Christian based program. Dabo's priorities in this order are: 1) Jesus 2) His family 3) Transferring his Christian values to his coaches and players. 4) The rest of the world. Therefore, based on these top 4 priorities, Dabo is going to be super picky about who he allows on his team because his Christian values come before anything else.
You don't beat a spread by 33. Good on Pate for seeing it coming (at least the danger of it), and I don't know how it could be the portal, since I don't think Duke was pulling talent by that route. For Clemson's sake, I hope it was one of those "pencil in the w" games, where they got blind-sided and won't let it happen again. Otherwise, somebody is going to poach Duke's coach next year.

Clemson was not stunned, they were soundly beaten. Clemson showed up ranked 9th in the country, Duke showed up to play football.
It is one game. No conclusions can be drawn until we see if it continues.
We saw it all last year, their offense has no balance, they can’t push the ball down the field and they have no weapons on the outside.
I watch the game. Great win for DUKE!
When Dabo lost his long time DC and oc has exposed him as hc
Yep, and he’s made poor hires since then instead of finding proven and experienced coaches he brought in friends and former players that haven’t proven anything at this level.
Coaching experience prior to Clemson
Wes Goodwin: First coaching job
CJ Spiller: First coaching job
Tyler Grisham: First coaching job
Lemanski Hall: First coaching job
Kyle Richardson: High school
Mickey Conn: High school
Thomas Austin: 2 years at Georgia State
How many players did Kirby get in the portal???
To put his into perspective: This 21-point win was Duke's largest over a ranked opponent since claiming a 34-0 victory over No. 9 Colgate in 1942. Got that? 1942! 81 years ago. WWII.
Texted my homies last night, told em the line was Clemson -13, any takers. We all declined, 2 hours later we were stunned
😂😂😂 I’m glad you touched on that ramen noodle special cause boooooooy!😂😂😂
Dabo is trying to lock Lane Kiffin in as the next coach at Alabama
Great content!
That'd be a no for me also on the Duke helmets and put the blue stripe back down the middle as well.
Marking this post. Be back in a couple weeks.
No bueno
Would y'all mind updating your thumbnails on the end card? Little annoying seeing the same two Kirby Smart takes from months ago
Liked Duke's Helmets.................a lot.
As a Tennessee fan i feel somewhat responsible for clemsons results. I think we hurt their feelings in the bowl game
Everything doesn't have a Tennessee angle. This just makes that sloppy bowl game look bad for both teams
EVERY school that reaches the top thinks it will never end LOL... and they ALWAYS do eventually. As an FSU fan...we were definitely at that point after Bowden and Jimbo... and guess what?
actually FSU did recruit Keon Coleman which lead to him being comfortable when they came knocking again
Josh called it man😂 cannot believe it
I just noticed that if Colorado beats Nebraska this weekend and beat Colorado State the weekend after that we’ll be potentially talking about a game of the week against Oregon.
Love the Duke " Detroit" tigers look
Luv to sip of tea clip josh
I’ll save my comments until FSU because that’s their opportunity to respond and it’s only fair to give them a chance to clean it up before we all cry about it.
Congrats on the call. Wouldn’t have picked that loss
Yep I see him coming out especially if they lose again and announce his retirement but if they win he’ll announce it to just a few that need to know and will wait for the final game for the official announcement in my opinion
Not a fan of the Duke helmets.
But love the result of that game!
Wow! The talent gap on paper was HUGE for Clemson yet the results were lopsided in Duke’s favor. This is why you play the games.
Question, if you get a player out of the portal, do you have to pull a scholarship from another player?
Depends if they want to come over as a scholarship player from the schools offer, or them possibly being a walk on.
Clemson was given a gift with the touchdown they got.😂😂😂
Clemsoning is Back!
I love watching Clemson lose😂
The whole scouting high school talent with stars has some huge deficiencies..
Sometimes they get it right but alot of good talent does not get recognition
Nah, that’s factually incorrect according to very good data. The HS recruiting accuracy is better than it ever has been. It’s not 100% and never will be, but the correlation between 4* & 5* athletes making it to the NFL is at an all time high.
I disagree a little bit with how to fix this program.
Clemson has its most blue-chip players ever, for example (rather than "need the portal" for talent), plus Clemson build the first-of-its-kind NIL institute, & some extra TV revenue is likely incidental for determinant success when *IPTAY (Clemson's funding arm) alone raised a quarter-billion last year.*
I think it's easy to blame those things, it's just inaccurate is all, & it's harder to admit the problems are simply deeper when it comes to development.
As an Ohio State fan, I agree with this Georgia fan's assertion that if something slightly different happened in a game, Georgia would have lost.
Legit 6 teams could now make ACC Title game…FSU, Clemson, Duke, UNC, Pitt, Miami.
Josh, I love you, man. But you hedged HARD in "predicting" this potential outcome. Don't be sipping like you called the score. XD
Coleman always wanted to go to FSU; he just backed out because of the turmoil in Tallahassee
Who would have though that without Lawrence, Etienne, and Higgins that Clemson would fall off the ladder 🤔
Based off of what we saw on Monday night against Duke, it’s not too far-fetched that Clemson can go 5-7 this year
guess that would put them on par with the gators huh?
FSU fan here and I have to say no way. It's one game, game one against a good team with some turnovers im bad spots. Clemson might be down some this year but I doubt the bottom has fallen out.
That's a big stretch. Not a Tiger fan but believe they'll still notch 9-10 W's this season......unfortunately.
Toughest part for Dabo after a loss like this is figuring out where to rank Ohio State.
Check your facts Josh ( im on a roll lol)
Coleman’s first choice was fsu but he didn’t want to risk his eligibility because we were starting a rebuild and COVID just broke out!
Dabo's priorities in this order are: 1) Jesus
2) His family
3) Transferring his Christian values to his coaches and players.
