For any type of thread bolts (on engine) I alway clean it then applied some thread lock when reinstall to prevent the it caming loose in the future. And on the cutting blade, after sharpening I balanced it to making sure both side blade grind off even to prevent machine vibrate due to blade grinding off evenly. Just an idea for someone new, but for you (posting video's) you already knew that. 😁👍
I have a Briggs 625ex but my question is. Every time I replace the recoil starter it keeps breaking it’s really hard to pull , I bought with a new cup I notice the flywheel is hard to turn is it suppose to be this way?
At 6:10, you remind us not all bolts on the engine housing are not the same length-- that we should keep track of which bolt goes where. If the proper locations are forgotten, a GENTLE trial threading/insertion will reveal the proper location.
so you just replaced the key? where do you get one and how do you know which one to get? Thanks. I have the same mower and it kept running for 4 seconds after I pulled off the spark plug wire!!!??
when i was 8 i was given a 24 inch mower with a briggs,,,it would not start,,,i pulled the flywheel off thinking it was the points,,,key was they problem put a new one in started right up....i made good money mowing yards with it....my first repair ,,
Will a broken flywheel key cause a engine to randomly lock up and unlock? It's done it couple of times I just rock the blade back and forth and eventually it in locked and it's tight like it's a seized engine,it very strange systoms to me and I didn't hit anything.
Do you have a video on how to take a part the transmission assembly for that model lawnmower? I'm only asking because I've found a brute lawnmower similar to the one your working on but they had on the diagram the key is located under the bottom!
An excellent video on flywheel key diagnosis and repair, but you got lucky with the flywheel already being loose. I repaired the same Brute mower a while back and it seemed to me that the handle hardware was "cheap" and not very well made. Your opinion?
@@SmallEngineDIY did yours exhibit no spark at all?? I replaced my magneto. with a genuine Briggs. and no spark at all. checked air gap .and perfect. .kill switch and wire check out fine .and new spark plug .
@@Klassyladyk , yep your fly wheel key broke or sheared , a big old pile of anything hard will do it , big rock , cinder block , sprinkler head, good news is the shearing of the pin or breaking it saved your mowers main shaft from bending or breaking either one is good bye mower. loaned a refurbished honda mower to my girlfriend who lives only a block away , it was the caddy of mowers it had electric start, self propelled , and it had a honda motor which last forever , cut wonderful grass, she had it 15 min and destroyed it she bent the shaft by hitting a steel pipe after that the damn thing vibrated so bad everything on it kept falling off of it from the vibration it would make your hands numb from it. In this particular case the shear pin did not break or shear , it just bent the shaft , that happens sometimes defective shear pin engineering, shear pin was too strong, it might have been rusted on and that's why it bent the shaft, naturally i trashed the mower motor kept the frame . good luck its an easy job replacing shear pin .
I hit something hard with not push mower, and now I can't turn it over without taking the spark plug out, the valves are not moving at all is that a timing key or something else.
I got a Troy built push mower with a Briggs engine and when I pull the pull starter it back fires a couple of times and won’t start would the flywheel key cause this?
I've pretty much got the same engine and symptom on Troy-Bilt with that briggs engine. I know what I hit though... it was a hidden stump left from a tree cut down to the ground, The ground had receded and the grass was hiding the danger. Bent the blade over! I put an older blade back on, and the fact it ran at all seemed a miracle! But it was tough to start after that and sounded awful when it ran. So before I worry about the flywheel, is there any way to tell if the crankshaft is slightly bent? I'd imagine even a slight bend would mean all the bearings would be shredded in no time, and it wouldn't be worth fixing. How do you go about testing that? I thought maybe a new blade, then measure the gap between blade and body, then turn the blade 1/2 way around and repeat? See how bad the difference is?
remove the spark plug, tilt the mower, and have someone pull the starter (spinning the motor) while you watch the shaft from below. if it spins eccentrically (oval), it is bent. If it spins concentrically (round), it is fine.
$1.75 for the key and my own labor = can't get better than that. My key was sheared about 50% which allowed me to start it if I was lucky and after a lot of shoulder and wrist pain. Glad I didn't throw the mower in the river like I wanted to. I didn't need the flywheel puller. I tapped the flywheel and crankshaft lightly, then when I felt the flywheel move a little I "walked" it off the shaft
Well I would have put a new blade on the mower and you did a great job on the mower but the most important thing is to tell her never never use the mower again. She was very luck she did not get hurt
The lady said that every-time she runs over the brass sprinkler heads ,she hears a loud banging noise, but as soon as she lifts up the mower on it's rear wheels the noise goes away. I told her all i could do for her.. was to put the big wheels on the front....SHE AGREED....but she called me back a week later and says now it cuts funny and the cuts look like a pyramid, naturally i refunded her money.
This is why so many good old 90s & 2000s mowers are at the curb these last few years, grab them because China closed their magnesium factories. 3D printed flywheels coming soon

Thanks, Fought mine last year for a couple times and put it up, Took it apart after watching your video and yalla,, Fixed
Thanks for the video, showed me what I needed to know to fix my mower. I should have listened to you about the flywheel, cracked mine, DOH!
Excellent tutorial and video well walked through indeed.
Where can I purchase the key from

Same here I’m 16 🤘
Need to ask u quick question did you lineup at the arrow put the key in or few degrees off thx lot
Line up the timing gear with the camshaft gear.
love your apprentice
Very well explained and I appreciate your video!

It sounds like something internal in the engine. Maybe bad piston rings, connecting rod...?
Thank you!! owe you a cold beer!!

cherokeefiddler This Brute actually seemed well made. I was surprised that the flywheel was loose. Usually it takes prying or a puller to get it off.

will the flywheel key go bad on a new mower?
Only if you hit something hard. . .like a limb or a rock. You'll KNOW when that happens. The sound alone is a warning. Otherwise, the key is intact.
@@kiltedwolf2 I think I messed up my new mower because I hit a dirt bank with it. Now it won't crank

Was that a "Woodruff Key" you placed it with? Or do you have to order a specialty key from Briggs?
Use the key from Briggs.
Thanks for the video although my flywheel key did not drop in place that easily 😂😂I had to fit in from underneath
That happens sometimes. As long as it works.👍👍

Probably bent push rod possibly something worse
I hit something with my mower and the wheel flew off. Is it possible to fix that?
Thank you for the video, Nice job and a very big help.
I got a Troy built push mower with a Briggs engine and when I pull the pull starter it back fires a couple of times and won’t start would the flywheel key cause this?
It might be. Does the pull start kick back when you try to pull it.? If not, you could also look at the valves. They might be out of adjustment.
The DIY Tool the pull starter does kick back and I clean the carb how to I check the valves
7:18 Dog wants to play. Who's a good dog? Yeah, you're a good dog! :)
My new pin won't drop in. Won't even hammer in. Btw u should make relaxation sound videos with the birds and wind chimes. :)
Thanks a lot for this video it really helped A lot
I got one crafstman platinum series 700 and it's almost the same, thanks now I know how remove the flywheel, mine has a bad magnet
briggs engine ?:P
I have a 20 hp twin that shers the key everytime I crank it help
wrong size key?
Maybe the keyseat or slot is damaged or needs a larger key. When you slide the key in the slot is there any play?
The key and keyway aligns the shaft and flywheel correctly. The taper holds it tight when the nut is torqued with the proper lock washer
Supper good video thanks.
The key is analogous to a fuse in an electric circuit. If there is too much stress on the system it gives way.
12 dollars later “a pack of keys and flywheel puller” problem solved! Thank you sir for this informative video.

great video.
good video but if the key shears from hitting something the timing is advanced because the wheel is slipped in the direction of rotation.
Good job
I got the $12 wheel puller and the wholes don,t line up. What wheel puller do I need from Briggs and Stratton?
