There are reasons for the 3 possible boom locations. An aft boom is near the engine room, reducing the length of power cables needed to run the conveyor motors. However, it means that the boat can only unload to the side along a fairly straight dock face. However, there are some ports where this is not possible. Many of the older lakers, especially limestone haulers including Munson, thus had or have forward mounted booms, and new builds like Mark Barker also have forward booms to give flexibility in what docks they can access. Those couple stub boom footers are a worst case, they can only unload into a hopper and conveyor system.
Somebody turned in a lost wallet at the canal. You don’t see that in Minneapolis/St Paul…the Munson has a horn… very good. A classic that rivals the Barker
LOL!! They actually owned the dock in Superior for 30 years, they received some financial assistance through the City of Superior to re build the dock to make it state of the art for them. The old location was falling apart, and flooding.
@@markbaker3639 it's called a steering pole. The wheelsman uses as a "sight" to line up the bow of the boat on a landmark, just as a rifleman uses the sights on his rifle when aiming at a target
Love those classic old laker lines. Awesome salute(s). And again, you are there to catch the historic moment. Thanks Paul.
Glad you like them! Posting the departure soon, I'll miss biking up the bridge to catch a ship!
beautiful horn, beautiful echoes, beautiful overhead view -- thanks so much!!! liking the channel thumbnail, as well 🙂
Thank you very much!
The John G Munson sure did make this historical visit count...⚓📣
they sure did! They are pretty consistent on treating the crowds well!
Still the best classic example of a pre-after ender self unloader. Long may you sail, JOHN G. MUNSON
Indeed!
WOW WOW great views of the Munson and nice showing off to the crowd with extra horn. Thanks Paul
Glad you enjoyed it
My favorite whistle of all the lakers and im in SanFrancisco, Ca
Its a great "vibrate your body" whistle!

I've heard that as well on the boom locations, flexibility

For the most part, Duluth is a very nice place! I do feel the Munson has an outstanding horn!
I am really sad that C Reiss is moving but it is probably much needed, I hope the owner found that wallet
I forgot about the wallet! 😆
The John G.
Munson's horn is a bit different than other ships horns. Thank you for the video.
It is indeed! Much "deeper"
Lots of people like a locomotive style horn but I like a horn with enough low freq power to shake you a little if you are standing on the piers. Cool.
I agree with you
what’s going on with the c reiss docks? is it being shut down by the health dept., is it being turned into a nightclub?

Last Laker to Reiss dock. Why?
They moved this dock to Superior, next to hallett 8
What is the Spar on the front of the boat used for? I don't see it on the new boats

Steering, they use it as a "pointer" for direction.
@@PaulScinocca thanks, Paul, you made it more simple!!

LOL! I thought I'd keep that little good intention bobble in the video.
Yeah very bittersweet. For the state and local governments too, they're gonna lose some tax revenue to Superior.
Big time!
