    I just had an argument on a forum about getting gas at a station when the tanker is filling up the tanks. I had always learned NEVER to fill up, as the force of the incoming gas is pulling u all the sediment in the bottom of the tank. Some guy told me I was completely wrong, that ‘modern’ gas stations have filters, blah blah blah, and that this can’t happen. I’m SO glad to hear you talk about that sediment.

    • @TheLawnmowerLady
      @TheLawnmowerLady  Рік тому +3

      I have seen with my own eyes, debris spewing from the hose. I stopped, went inside, and asked if the tanker was here today. Of course, he had just left. I showed the guy at the counter the fuel in the tank, and showed him my other completely clean fuel cans. He didn't charge me for the 1/2 liter or so of fuel I pumped. I went to another station. Debris like that is not much of a problem for your automobile, as the fuel pump typically draws from the top. Small engines with gravity fed systems just can't overcome Mean ol' Mr Gravity. Thanks for watching. Cheers!

    you’re probably right about the bad gas, it’s a shame people don’t take better care of their mowers. I thought at first that it might be a gas cap that wasn’t venting properly but since it ran for 15 minutes, I guess you can eliminate that too, Thanks for the vid!

    Every spring I get a few mowers in with contaminated fuel in them. Many people swear they just put fresh fuel in. Mabe so, but their gas tank was contaminated before they added fresh fuel. I usually clean out the fuel tank and carburetor then use my own recreational fuel to the mower. As expected, the mower runs 100% better. I tell them to dispose of the contaminated fuel and mabe consider a new fuel can as well. If I see the fuel can has no cap, its a given as to what is wrong.

      I get a rush of bad, or debris contaminated fuel often in June/July. My inclination would be to pull the carb and run it through the ultrasonic in addition to replacing that 150 micron fuel screen (it’s hardly a filter) with a 40 micron clear paper filter since there’s enough room. Just a little added insurance…

    • @TheLawnmowerLady
      @TheLawnmowerLady  Рік тому +1

      I actually eliminated the fuel filter, it didn't come from the factory that way. Someone else had added it with the wrong sized fuel lines. The mesh screen in the tank was doing it's job just fine. I tried several filters, but they all resulted in a small stream of a fuel leak.

    • @Rein_Ciarfella
      @Rein_Ciarfella Рік тому +2

      @@TheLawnmowerLady In that case I would have replace the fuel line completely. I like to send machines back to owners with a shutoff and filter even if they arrived without one. Having a secondary filter, especially one with a small micron, can only help to eliminate debris in the fuel system. I guess you could call me obsessive, but I feel better about sending a machine with a filter and shutoff even if they didn't come that way from the factory.

      Wow, that's some serious coin. Prop up the drive wheels and turn the pulley by hand. If the wheels turn, the transmission is likely OK. Under load however it might be different. I'd definitely be pulling the wheels to look at the pinion gear and the matching wheel gears. This video is not a Honda, but you get the idea: ua-cam.com/video/W2ERSoybD7A/v-deo.html

    Just a couple of things number one in the fuel filter on that machine is not really worth calling it a fuel filter. You need to step up to the size filter you’d normally see on a lawn or garden tractor that has a fuel pump on it, those at least are real filters. You might have to replumb things a little bit there but I think you could get er done. The main thing I wanted to talk about, though is the fact of what all the mice and critters do to our engines. We really need to get the covers off of them and make sure they don’t have nests inside which cause a lot of excessive heat and a lot of problems that can result in permanent engine damage. Hint: they look a hell of a lot better when you use the pressure washer on them too!

    I have a very similar model Honda. As you mention, the fuel tap can be the problem. If you leave the fuel tap closed by mistake, the mower can nevertheless run for a surprisingly long time. That would certainly be compatible with a mower that will run for 10 mins stall then be unable to restart. Not saying that is the problem in this particular instance but it can happen and should be the first thing you check if that happens to you. Just wondering why you think the problem might have been the ignition coil? I figured with a bad ignition coil you wouldn’t have been able to start the mower at all but I am not an expert like you are.

    • @TheLawnmowerLady
      @TheLawnmowerLady  Рік тому +1

      Just based on her description: stopped mowing, and she couldn't get it started til the next day. Signs of an ignition coil failing often happens on a hot start attempt. After I returned the mower to her, and asking a few more questions, I'm leaning towards fuel tap off. I did find out there were some other issues, but most were red herrings. The mower was long gone by then, and didn't make it into the video.

    If I pull in to a station and a tanker is filling the tanks, I leave. Never get fuel when a tanker is filling or just finishing. If I'm staying local, which is 90% of the time, I fill up at one station. I have three 5 gallon cans for gas. I rotate them. In other words, when one is finished, I clean it out and use another clean one. Good troubleshooting Stella.

    FYI - Ethanol raises the Octane level in gas. If straight gas is so much better why do you have to put stabilizer in it for periods of non-use?
    I think blaming Ethanol is not getting to the real problem. My gas garden equipment (mowers, tillers, trimmers) are idle for 6 months out of the year with ethanol in them. Been doing this for over 20 years and in the case of my mowers they all start pretty much on the first pull with ethanol sitting idle in the equipment for around 6 months every year. Now my tiller may go without use for over a year with a Briggs engine that starts pretty much on the first pull with ethanol sitting in the tank. Another fact there's only 15% of ethanol in gasoline to raise the octane to 87. We use to use lead but that would have been extremely harmful for our respiratory environment.
    Ethanol isn't perfect but it is never the culprit you all spout. Everyone needs to realize that ethanol is distilled from plants and that we can grow our own fuel that is waaaaaay less harmful than gasoline. Chevron and Exxon are very much aware of that.

    • @garyalensr
      @garyalensr Рік тому

      breeze787 it's a proven fact ethanol fuel is garbage for small engines if left in the equipment for extended periods of time. It don't believe for one min you let you equipment set for 6 months with ethanol fuel and not starting them regularly and they start on the first or second pull. Ethanol fuel absorbs moisture. I'm sorry it facts

    • @jimbrewer2893
      @jimbrewer2893 Рік тому +2

      Don't know where you live, but 87 octane around here is 10% ethanol. E15 has 15% ethanol and is some bad stuff for mowers etc. Manufacturers have warnings in owners manuals against use of E15 or higher fuels. It is proven that ethanol fuels will draw moisture from the air. It takes longer for non ethanol fuel to degrade.

      @@jimbrewer2893 I completely agree with you. I don't use pump fuel in any of my equipment. I use premix True-fuel for my 2cycles and regular True-fuel in my mower and Tractor. This guy's is off his rocker if he thinks ethanol fuel is good for small engines

    • @breeze787
      @breeze787 Рік тому

      @@jimbrewer2893 You are absolutely right I misspoke its 10% ethanol. But you sir are persuaded by the fossil fuel propaganda. I live in the Pacific Northwest and you are right ethanol draws H2O but not enough for it to be a problem for small engines even though manufacturers warn of its usage in their equipment. My experience is that ethanol is a default cause of problems amongst small equipment repair troubleshooting suspicions not the actual truth of the matter.

    • @TheLawnmowerLady
      @TheLawnmowerLady  Рік тому +2

      @breeze787 Most folks don't have the same track record as you for their small engines. I think more of the problem revolves around how equipment is stored. Equipment in a garden shed will have a very different experience during storage than when in a attached (and perhaps insulated) garage.
      Fuel tanks stored near empty have greater capacity for condensation that a full tank. There are differing amounts of detergents and additives in fuel based on the octane levels. Those detergents are what deteriorates and turn into that gelatin like substance found in the bottom of fuel bowls, that occur after the alcohol evaporates from the ethanol and leaves only water.
      FWIW, I store my ethanol free fuel in airtight containers without stabilizer for years at a time, with very little problems. I can't say the same when I was using ethanol laced fuel in my small engines. And I tend to agree with you regarding plant based fuel sources, but until we can figure out a way to get it to market completely free of fossil fuels, we're just kicking the can down the road. (The battery tool dilemma is a perfect example)
      I appreciate you watching, and your comments. Cheers!
