This is a new type of content that I really enjoyed making. I'm hoping the video does well because it was fun to make, and a lot less stressful and time-consuming than my other videos are. Of course, I'm going to keep making long-form fight videos, Sword videos, and everything else. But being able to take a little break every now and then with some VR be fun!
A video game that I'd love to see a video on is Hellish Quart, it's a game based of of HEMA and uses MoCap to simulate fights, and also has physical sword clashes. Probably the closest to true sword fighting in video games i've seen so far
Now i kinda want to see a moment in Star Wars where Vader knocks someone's Lightsaber from their hands, apologizes, and then uses the force to pick it up and give it back while menacingly telling them to take it.
It's not even something that's needed in a game like blade and sorcery but it helps sell the realism and personally I find it more fun to play more precisely rather than random arm movements hoping that something works
@@Yan_- I have learned that it is genuinely more effective to be as precise as possible, or physically dodge, compared to just flailing, it’s very fun after having practiced for most of the games existence while I was younger, as now I can react very well to attacks (the divine strength mod helps quite a bit though)
2:29 i find it interesting that the game rewards proper slice technique such as it does. Most players rarely get limb removals, but someone with proper slicing technique like David can get them easily, even without good space for follow-through.

@@rayanderson5797*barbarian enters rage* "Seriously? That's it his whole stick is he gets mad now? That's his secret weapon? Come on guys are we in a fight or on a playground!?"
as a small game dev I just wanted to answer to a couple of your final requests: for the first 2 points the reason behind it has everything to do with the sensors precision and sensitivity; put simply the sensors responsible to registering the movement itself isn't that great (it's just a slightly better version of the same sensor used by smartphones to understand when to put the screen horizontal and vertical), fast moevements generate very strange and imprecise results and that often times results in the developers filtering out said movements to make the game playable. reguarding thumb grip: it's technically doable but the most effective way to handle it would be to simply create an alternate longsword that just uses thumb girp. you could also add the configuration that activates / deactivates thumb grip with possibly a button but that would either require an extra button on the handles themselves or a different configuration for the settings.
Are you a vr game dev? If so how do you become one and what skills do you have to learn? I’m more interested in making maps yk. Like the environment the player plays in.
You become one by doing it. You can start for free on something like Unity. It's not particularly easy, I'd recommend starting with normal 3D games and then work your way up.
As much as I love B&S, 0:48 sums up how I feel about the game when you try to do cool (heck, even realistic) stuff. :'D Thanks for making more like this though! This is good fun.
I love it when you give npcs time to pick their weapons up. Looks like you are not interested in fighting against an unarmed opponent at all, and that's so cool
Yeah, something that ends up cropping up when a trained melee fighter delves into VR is that your hands can actually move *much* faster than the best VR systems are currently able to track. Valve had to release an update that increased the max hand rotation speed thanks to Beat Saber, but honestly the polling rate still isn't good enough for a properly motivated melee artist.
@ClokworkGremlin I came up on this playing boxing games, I would throw a punch and the game would just be like "wait, did you just move? I didn't catch that, I'm going to just say you did nothing"
Lol gotta love the "jack sparrow running around" moment after losing his sword, and the joker talking to himself trying the saber move XD Also there are a couple of enhancement mods you can download for a better "challenge"
10:50 This is a problem in a lot of games that require you to use two hands for a weapon. For example, rifles in FPS games in VR face the same problem and it doesn't work very well.
Blade and Sorcery is a bunch of jank fun. But would love for one day for there to be a vr game that makes the combat more exhilarating with better npc AI and blade tracking/registering and whatnot. Those saber exchanges you had were the closest thing to a thrilling encounter (from my viewing perspective) than just the npcs flailing around and leaving gaps for you to thrust. Weighted controllers like some custom 3d printed sword would definitely up the immersion. If medieval vr games get popular enough that companies make controllers for that like vehicle sims do, that would be awesome. For now B&S (yes that's what I like to abbreviate it to) is the closest for one without access to swords either real or training swords to try out sword practicing to an extent. But idk about anyone else, I think a broomstick would be more helpful at actual beginner sword practice than what the current state of vr offers.
I feel like being an expert swordsman doesn't add too much to this experience, since just thrusting to swinging seems to always work against these npcs.
You don't even normally do gaming or VR content and yet this was one of the most natural and non-cringy gameplay and commentary I've seen of this game in a long time
I must recommend Swordsman VR for you. In regards to the actual sword combat and enemy AI it's way more challenging than blade and sorcery. It has enemy armor physics and everything! With that you might actually even have a small challenge haha
Hey dude, VR dev here who's been working on improving physics based VR for the past 8 years or so. I've been looking out for real sword techniques being used in VR to see where I can improve things. Can't wait to get my tech demo out within next few weeks and I would really like if you could try it out. It's not a sword fighting game or anything specific, but I spend a lot of time getting objects like swords to function as accurately as I can get them to. One thing I can point out is that issue you have with rotating the sword in hand so you can hold it "thumb grip", is absolutely possible, and when I test with swords I like to try real techniques with as much speed as I can get out of them.
It's genuinely entertaining to watch your movements in the bottom left corner this way. Almost like the end Villain or the main character done with everything. As is expressed in voice as is expressed in manner and it's genuinely entertaining.
You HAVE to play Swords of Gurrah on Oculus Quest 2 next. It’s a pvp sword fighting game and it would be so entertaining to see how a real swordsman competes against a gamer swordsman
Love to see the frustration with them tripping over bodies. Only gripe otherwise is how I can hit someone with a spiked mac in the head and they live, but I can accidentally cut an arm of by barely hit the joint.
Just want to say regardless of wether you see this or not, thank you for educating me and hopefully anyone else watching your videos about how swordsmanship truly looks and acts, i firmly believed some things in video games prior to seeing your channel and now I throughly enjoy games that actually bring a much more realist approach to swordsmanship although i still can’t find one close enough to realism lol
I really enjoyed this. It’s always fun watching you slice people up in VR (though the dead bodies seemed to be doing half the work this time around). Would you be willing to try any other VR combat games besides Blade and Sorcery? Boneworks has incredible physics for swordplay and gunplay, including one and two handed gripping if my memory serves me correctly.
I hope one day the Blade And Sorcery devs can make like a different type of moveset for like boss encounters that's actually competent at fighting. There's one mod where they follow up their attacks very quickly in combos so that plus armour makes the enemy pretty tough, but still. Maybe if they do, we can get a follow-up video. Also I tried tying my index controllers together to do longsword in the game and it was actually decent lmao.
Thank you for the video, it was a ton of fun! The controller handles are indeed a pain for fighting simulators. Not only you can't get a proper 2-handed grip, but you also can't use your fingers very well to control the virtual "blade" because the controllers are so damn ergonomic😅 I actually saw "rifle" accessories for VR controllers with magnetic locks, so that you could lock both controllers into a rifle position. Shame there's nothing similar for swords...
I enjoyed this type of video! Imagine you try this again in a much bigger room and have a similar weighted practice sword in your hand also somehow, that way you would also be swingimg around the weight instead of just the light controllers in your hands
You should play Battle Talent instead, the enemies are stronger and they are harder to knock over with one swing. (As in, you can't knock them over in one swing)
I also thought about a sword controller that imitates the weight and handle of a long sword! Some kind of wrapping that could integrate the already existing controller of an oculus quest (or other kinds of controller), would be really nice and keep the developing costs low. I imagine getting the feel right would be the hardest challenge.
That was one thing that Red Steel 2 for the wii got right. The power of your attack depended on the power of your swing, and it had no problem tracking the speed of my swings.
I like spear and shield combat, I had a chance to practice kendo irl or just spear but never combined with shield... After some videos and practicing technique, even the most op armored bots couldn't stand a chance 🤣
You know what you should try? Enhanced AI mod. It basically makes them faster and much more closer to real fights(still not real, but, still, better than nothing) Medieval Mega Pack is also a must have! Contains hundreds of medieval era weapons from all around the world
For the grip idea, late response and someone's probably mentioned by now BUT: There's a vid out on UA-cam where people have tried designing glove-style controllers for haptic feedback where if you pick up say, a cup, there's cables on the back of the glove and sensors and other computer stuff that will stop your fingers from fully clenching in order to simulate the holding of a cup. It would even work for walls, corners, and varying size objects. So, I'm thinking we combine that tech, plus a simple wood rod fixed to the palm of the primary hand and you'll have a glove-based controller to actually move your hand and fingers around with + having something physical in your hand for immersion, and if the rod is long enough you could grip onto it while triggering the grip button of the off-hand so you can handle the 2-hand sword more immersed-like. Not gonna help much with 2-handed polearms, staffs, bow+arrow, but it'd probably do decently for sword stuff, especially with a weight at the top of the rod for just a little more immersion.
Yeah, B&S is the best, but sadly VR as a whole never quite gets swords feeling right. Thankfully, it's absolutely perfect for filling with crazy powerful mods that make you into an anime protagonist
I'd recommend Broken Edge. It's a VR swords duel game where you can only one-tap your opponent if you move in accordance to your class (samurai, knight, rapierist, etc).
Funny thing: when I was practicing sword ca 20 years ago, nobody called himself "swordsman". We were merely recreating some moves from old fencing treatises, real swordsman and masters ceased ages ago and there was no continuity in practice between us and them like e.g. Far East martial arts.
