Nice, different way of making what we call breyani in South Africa. Depends what part of South Africa. We do use lentils in our breyani, where it differs from what I have seen is made in India. We also layer our breyani. Rice, curry, lentils, rice curry, lentils, etc with the last layer being rice. If the budget allows we will also layer in some boiled eggs. Once the layering is done, we will slow-cook it on a very low heat to dry it and make the rice nice and fluffy. As they say, there's more than one way to skin a cat, and all versions would be equally delicious. Your SA version is probably popular in either Durban or Johannesburg.
