  • Tenor Enrico Caruso sings "Vesti la giubba" (from act I of "Pagliacci" by Ruggero Leoncavallo) on His Master's Voice record VA 30, played on an EMG Mark IX gramophone with a Meltrope III soundbox and a Burmese Colour Needle. Acoustically recorded November 30, 1902 in Milan.

    Thanks to HMV for remastering the earlier 1902 Vesti la giubba Caruso recording at 78.26 rpm. The pitch is right on the money. We usually hear his 1907 version which is weightier at the expense of purity and clarity.

      This disc seemed too high at 78 rpm, so I slowed it down a bit. I think it is pretty close...

    According to Aida Favia-Artsay in her Caruso book of his records the speed is 68.18 RPM for 1902 The later 1907 which is DB1802 with new orchestra is 76.62 RPM

    Glorious ! Amazing quality for 120 years ago although I appreciate this pressing was made in 1951. Very many thanks for sharing. I have red label HMV DB 1802 which has to be played at 76.60 rpm.

      I slowed it down a bit, but have no way of dialing in a fraction of an rpm. Hope it is very close!
