    These podcasts are awesome. When yall break down and explain the setups on the onx map, it really helps us see why yall hunt where you do. All in all, it helps us to see all the aspects that increase our odds for success. That wind breakdown was very helpful, how you had to move just down off of that ridge to get a steady wind vs a swirling wind. Love these podcasts.

    It would be hard to rate my favorate THP video, but this one is near the top. Greg's poise just blew me away. I've been hunting deer for 35+ years, and I'm fully aware of the challenges of just getting a shot off on a mature buck. To do it while making perfect video, while working with an unfamiliar release....good grief Greg! You are one talented young man!!

    I actually really enjoy Greg’s self filmed hunts!! Because I am always self filming and never have someone to film for me. I know that he is looking forward to having an extra guy filming for him this fall but I hope that you guys can also keep up the self filmed up as well because it relates to so many other hunters! Absolutely love these shows!

    You have several inexpensive options for frame packs - we quarter them laying on the ground, and then pack them out.

    I too have had deer cart issues on public land which I solved by taking the factory wheels with spokes off and replacing them with solid steel wheels and solid rubber tires which I purchased at Tractor Supply Co. Though shorter and do not allow quite as much clearance over debris on the ground they are almost indestructible.

    • @TheHuntingPublic
      @TheHuntingPublic  5 років тому

      Interesting! We may have to try that!

      I just noticed on Ted's Kentucky hunt that you must have put those solid steel wheels with solid rubber tires on your deer cart. Nice.

    You guys talked about quartering and packing out- we usually go a step further and debone all of the meat and put it into 5 gal ziploc bags. We bring a cheap pully as well so you can hang them in a tree easily. Deboning it vs. quartering doesnt take that much longer, and it lightens the load a good bit. Although if you have ol Tater Ted with , just load him up!

      Travis Bowers Sometimes they call me pack mule sometimes they call me tater

    • @paulellsworth7679
      @paulellsworth7679 5 років тому

      I'd like to second what Travis Bowers recommends. I am usually alone on my out of state hunts. Two years ago on an Ohio public land hunt I harvested a buck 2 miles in. I have a small pulley system and hung the deer off the end my climber, skinned him out, then boned him while he was hanging. Starting with the front shoulders, then pealing the backstraps placing them in gallon ziploc bags as I went, finishing with the hind quarters. Best part about the whole thing is you don't have to gut out the deer except for pulling out the loins.
      I was able to bring the deer, my stand and all my cold gear in one trip in a small jet sled... since this was my last day hunting, being hopeful or prepared for a kill, I had everything anyway packed and a cooler in my truck and was able to leave for home to Missouri from right there at my hunting spot with the hide neatly rolled up, the meat in the cooler and my tag on the antlers. Much better option for me.
      Something to think about as you guys get older. I was young once like Ted too, but as much as I hate to admit it, I can't quite complete now that I'm 50 with what I used to do in my 20's.
      My daughter and I watch all of your shows and love them. She's 14 and quite the hunter herself, have already shot 7 deer including 2 over 130 and 4 spring turkeys.
      Keep up the hunt, we look forward to your adventures in 2019!

    I remember driving to Odessa from Austin for Thanksgiving, There was maybe a 50 mile stretch where we saw 100 road kill deer. That was open country. You would think the deer could see the vehicles the drivers could see the deer. A spot in Tennessee in the spring seemed there was a dead road kill dog every half mile or less. Scouting by vehicle, you mentioned it.

    way to hold it together when it counted Greg. where these 2 bedding ridges drop off to the creek, & the wind becomes consistent, would ya guys say that this would fall under a "thermal hub", or not so much?

  • @bowhntr83
    @bowhntr83 6 років тому

    Nice buck! I’ve been thinking about buying a sit on top fishing yak for public hunting land creek access but then I found those Beavertail duck boats. They’re not cheap but I’m thinking it would be a good option and will probably hold me, my gear and a buck. The yak I’m looking at is rated to 450 lbs but I’m not sure how well it would do with a big deer strapped on it.

    Man Greg you did an awsome job getting on that deer with the camera and gettin the job done with the release issues!!! What cameras did you use for that setup? Also have you used a tactacam. We have one but can’t figure the darn thing out and it’s horribly blurry

    • @TheHuntingPublic
      @TheHuntingPublic  6 років тому +1

      Thanks DL! I was using a Canon G30 and GoPro 5 on that hunt. I have not used tactacams in the past but I definitely want to give them a try. They have a couple new models that shoot 4k footage, and one that has a wide angle lens. That's a bummer your's is blurry, not sure why that would be but I'm guessing they have good customer service and would be happy to help. Good luck this fall!

    my dad bought a brand new deer cart, i was prolly 17 and shot a 6 point on the first day of gun season and grabbed the cart and walked back to get him about 3/4 of a mile, made it about 50 yards and tried to go over a log and broke the rims in half and had to drag deer and cart out by myself. lesson learned, never buy a cart with plastic rims!!

    Another great hunt break down. I'm also from Iowa but basically in the opposite side and I'm curious to your game wardens position on quartering out a deer. I shot one way back in and called the officer and he advised me that it would be illegal. No reasoning or logic but essentially told me I would be ticketed.

    Wish I could have those types of hunts. I have been dear hunting for three years and bow hunting for one. All of my hard work/financial stress has only payed of to one little doe. I have took everything into consideration scent,camp,land,Time,time of year, and the dear in my area. I just don’t know if this sport is for me watching you guys kill big bucks gives me joy for you guys but every time I watch one I get discouraged that I can’t even have a small version of that. Any help?

    • @TheHuntingPublic
      @TheHuntingPublic  6 років тому

      Keep after it. Some of us hunted several years before getting a deer or turkey. Try to learn something on each trip to the woods. We hunt dozens of times before getting a chance at a buck. Understand how deer use your area through scouting and woodsmanship first. The rest comes later.
