I remember seeing that particular scene when this movie first came out. If you see them just before going through the bleachers there is a little girl, that almost goes right in front of the car! When I saw that I said that didn't look planned. Apparently I was right.
I saw that too, but never really paid that much attention to it in the past. After watching it a few times, I'm thankful she did the right thing by backing away instead of running across the car's path.
Burt discussed that particular scene. There was a lady stunt double in for Sally. They were supposed to come over the ledge and drive around the side of the field and then exit through the fence. The lady gunned it and that's one scene that went to hell just that fast. Burt recalled that that was the only terrified him to his core out of his time as a movie star. You can catch the interview Here on UA-cam
Actually, it was a kids football game. That's OK Burt, we've all done it. To one of the last true movie stars left in the business, Rest In Peace Mr. Reynolds.
I like watching Burt Reynolds act even before he got famous. There is some great episodes of Bonanza from around seasons 8,9,10,11 where him and Ken Curtis (Festus Haggen) are buddies. They made a great team.

Hey Daddy! It's a football game. Can we stay and watch? (Junior to Sherriff Justice.) You stay I'm going back.(as sheriff guns the accelerator and junior falls forward on the hood.)
I'm from Jupiter and ran across Burt many times. My dad was friendly with him back in the 70's and early 80's and did work on Smokey II, which was filmed in the area. Pretty much everyone liked Burt. He came up from humble beginnings in Riviera Beach, FL when it was a small fishing village and he lived in a small wood A frame home just south of Silver Beach Road and worked at the gas station at the end of his street on the corner US-1. His dad was a pretty hard core cop having busted my father in law as a teenager mostly for sneaking into the drive in theater that was there in the day. Anyway I was leafing through some pics of the production of part II and saw some celebrities that went on to star in The Cannonball Run that would have started pre-production right after that one.

What supposedly happend was. Groundskeepers the night before watered the grass. The crew were not aware of this and it caused the car to skid out of control.
not trying to take away from the message of the story but it was a little league football game not a baseball game for those who may have wanted to look the scene up to see what he is talking about.
Burt is just one of those guys that you wanted to emulate when I was growing up in the 70's, and I assume from a woman's perspective sucking face w the dude. He was a smooth bastard. Thanks, Burt. Just thanks.
This makes sense because that scene always looked wayyy too real to me seeing the car go right through the kids. I always winced when watching it. Thank God the kids are okay.
Kids in the 70s love for cars to jump over them, kids today to scared to drive a car, want it to drive itself and they need to have elbo, knee pads and puffy hel.its.
And here I am, a gen Z kid who drives a stick and dreams of fixing up an old muscle car when I get enough money. If you don't like people only looking at the bad apples of your generation, maybe you could try taking a closer look at mine.
Wow....DID NOT KNOW THIS. Fascinating to hear from Burt. I've always seen that scene and thought it looked scary too. Actually it was football game and we did see the right side of the car.
From Internet Movie Database: m.imdb.com/title/tt0076729/trivia Ever since the film's release, there were so many different rumors about exact number of cars used during filming and what happened to them later, even some official sources like Wikipedia often got their info wrong. Some like Hal Needham gave conflicting reports about them only using three or five 1977 Trans-Ams and few police cars. Before his death, Burt Reynolds said in interview how they used twelve Trans-Ams and how most of them got destroyed during filming. Over the years some fans managed to find and ask people who worked on the film or just watched the filming about all this, and the answer which they most often got was how there were eight 1977 special edition Trans-Ams and about the same number (although some said ten) of police cars. And couple things which were said and confirmed by everyone is how seven of the Trans-Ams got completely destroyed, not just while filming some heavy stunts like famous river jump, but also some minor stunts like car crashing through all the mail boxes. All of the Trans-Ams, including last surviving one which had no damage at all since it was only used as camera car and for photo stills, were crushed after filming was done on the orders by Pontiac because they only donated the cars to the production, and same thing happened to most if not all police cars. Of course, thanks to the movie, sales of Trans-Am skyrocketed, and if Pontiac kept all the Trans-Ams instead of crushing them, each of the cars could have been sold for high prices.

'Burt reynolds and john wayne are the best actors of all time I say.' - have you ever seen any other actors besides those two? Wayne was a terrible actor, as well as a terrible person, and Reynolds knew his limitations and stuck to comedic roles. His only serious movie was Deliverance.
Wow, I'm sure glad that nobody got hurt and Burt sure is a cool down to earth guy!!!!!
There was one boy with a broken leg.
This shows the true self of the man. Watched that movie many times and often wondered if that stunt went wrong. Georgia people are awesome. Glad nobody was hurt or killed.
Somehow I KNEW Burt was going to cite that scene. I was about 22 when that movie came out, and even then...and I'm not joking....in my weed and Crown Royal "enhanced" vision, I got really uncomfortable through that scene and couldn't believe how they'd "pulled that off" without killing any kids. So....a few months ago, I watched it again on TV. Same thing....that scene just scares me badly. Well....now I know...I wasn't alone.
"Come on Billy Ray get tough out there"
"Oh, look, a football game!"
"DON'T!
HIT!
THE KIDS!!"
See that’s what I thought. Burt says “little league baseball game” but I swore it was football game in the movie
It's a football game, can we watch? You stay and watch the game, I'm goin' back!
Burt Reynolds is pure Southern Class!
Pure Northern class actually.
Burt is from Lansing, Michigan.
Gotta love this guy he is so damn cool👍
I was just watching this movie with a friend and he told me this story. I paused the movie to look it up. Turns out he wasn't lying.
That scene stays with you. It wasn’t safe.
God rest your sole . We all miss you Birt
Remember him talking about this years ago and seen the movie so many times realized when he screamed don't hit the kids it was him losing it. He could make anything work except his greedy ass ex
She used him for her own personal gain, cheated on him, spent all his money, then used their child against him...pretty tough combination to get past. So sad he settled for her...he deserved so much better! RIP BR
Lonnie Anderson?

@@coldwinter5710 The side of Lonnie Anderson Hollywood want's to hide from the world. But what do you expect from Hollywood. It's a cesspool of degenerates, satanists, and the scum of humanity. And the greats like Burt Reynolds carved a gorge through it and showed the world that good will always triumph over evil.
Burt was top shelf. Great story. RIP Mr. Reynolds.
you watch that scene and you wonder how people got out of the way.
Motivation
Burt was always a decent guy and he always loved and respected, and trusted his stunt people.
smart guy - great guy - miss you

Thank you for observing, Talk Like a Pirate Day
Love him or hate him, we all loved him.
i love how he had his eyebrows done among many other things, but it keeps him looking young. looks like some form of facial abrasion techniques on his face to smooth it out.. very expensive procedure. Really loved this guy. Watch White Lightning , its free on youtube.
This is awesome..back when times were good...
I remember that scene. Wow, that wasn't scripted.
Will always be my hero he's the reason I drive truck and love doing it rest in peace
I sure miss Burt. I never met him. But, I've heard great things about him from people who have.
Millennials would not have reacted like this... RIP Burt.
Exactly. There would've been 20+ lawsuits and the movie would have gone bankrupt.
Ya know, this story, background information puts a whole new perspective on the dialogue in that scene.
+thirdgengta You're right.
What a fascinating insight into this movie.Burt was THE MAN.!
You can catch the interview Here on UA-cam
jdez10 there were also 2 or 3 people inside the bleachers too, and it looked like they only just got out of the way as the car goes through.
Actually, it was a kids football game. That's OK Burt, we've all done it. To one of the last true movie stars left in the business, Rest In Peace Mr. Reynolds.
We've all driven a sports car through a PeeWee football game?
I haven't.
Pic or it didn't happen.
doughesson lol.
I can't count the times I've gotten the small details wrong. I'm sure the follow-up interaction with parents is true to his recollection.
Thanks for the memories Burt. I believe it was a football game not baseball. I was 12 years old when it came out.
I like watching Burt Reynolds act even before he got famous. There is some great episodes of Bonanza from around seasons 8,9,10,11 where him and Ken Curtis (Festus Haggen) are buddies. They made a great team.
tomorrow there doing a smokey and the bandit run. if you live in the uk there going round the m25 in a black trans am and truck as well as a few American cars

Burt is sorely missed.
so lucky, wish I could hear Hal's take on it also, love ya Burt
After the stunt you could probably heard Hal Needham a mile away yelling @#$&!@#$ !!!
Hey Daddy! It's a football game. Can we stay and watch? (Junior to Sherriff Justice.) You stay I'm going back.(as sheriff guns the accelerator and junior falls forward on the hood.)
Actually the line goes: You see anything?Junior: Yeah it is a football game. Can we stay and watch? Buford: You stay and watch tha game I'm going back
@@codykoch7081 SUMBITCH!
In this interview @ 00:37 Burt says it was a little league baseball game, yet Junior says it was a football game.
@@bufordt.justice4052 it was a football game filmed in Lithonia Ga.
@@chrisconley8583, is that or near your home town? Do you remember filming of the movie?

@@josht5288 no this was around 10 years ago.
I love smokey and bandit the first and second and almost all burt reynolds movies, He was that actor with a great sense of humor talented charismatic top the best in Hollywood better than anyone steve mcqueen paul newman and even Brando, no wonder why he is the only actor in Hollywood that stayed number one in the box office for five years RIP burt🥰🥰🥰🥰🤩🤩🤩😍😍😍🥰🥰🥰🥰🤩🤩
Class act. Thanks burt rip my friend
I miss this man so much
We need more Burt Reynolds
Burt Reynolds is the authority on spending time with people's mothers.
What supposedly happend was. Groundskeepers the night before watered the grass. The crew were not aware of this and it caused the car to skid out of control.
not trying to take away from the message
of the story but it was a little league football game not a baseball game for those who may have wanted to look the scene up to see what he is talking about.
Without looking I thought it was a football game. I recall Junior wanting to watch the game.
I'm pretty sure you're right. I remember it being a football game too
It was a little league football game but they weren't supposed to go thru the middle of it.
Kids in the 70s love for cars to jump over them, kids today to scared to drive a car, want it to drive itself and they need to have elbo, knee pads and puffy hel.its.
and Heaven forbid their internet goes down. Us 70's kids, we'd just go outside and build or fix something.
Clearly you two haven’t seen any skateboarding, surfing, mountain biking, bmx jumping, parkour, etc of today...
And here I am, a gen Z kid who drives a stick and dreams of fixing up an old muscle car when I get enough money. If you don't like people only looking at the bad apples of your generation, maybe you could try taking a closer look at mine.
@@husq2100 that wouldn't fit with their tired ass narrative
Burt Reynolds ramping over kids during a little league game in a 1977 Pontiac Trans Am is the most 70s thing I've ever heard.
Rest In Peace Burt. Such a nice guy
Wow....DID NOT KNOW THIS. Fascinating to hear from Burt. I've always seen that scene and thought it looked scary too. Actually it was football game and we did see the right side of the car.
" Don't hit the kids!"- Beau Darvell
From Internet Movie Database:
m.imdb.com/title/tt0076729/trivia
Ever since the film's release, there were so many different rumors about exact number of cars used during filming and what happened to them later, even some official sources like Wikipedia often got their info wrong.
Brings to mind Don Williams:
"If you see Burt Reynolds,
would you shake his hand for me?
And tell ol' Burt
I've seen all his movies."
Makes me want to go back and watch the movie
Burt was an American treasure
RIP Burt 😭😭😭😭
What a cruel game life is. Rest In Peace Burt.
