- I've wanted to get behind the wheel of this car for a while. It's a BMW 435d X-Drive M Sport that had been breathed on by the guys at Hartge. A new inter-cooler and engine remap takes the standard 3 litre twin turbo from 313bhp to 398 bhp.
We call this the 'Hartge M4 Heartbreaker' ! It is so rapid and in this video I put it through it's paces in Comfort, Sport and Sport + driving modes. We also try out Launch Control and find out just how fast it can get to 60 mph...and it was FAST !

Even without the Hartge kit the 435D is a blast 👍😎
My 370bhp F30 335d with AC Schnitzer performance upgrade and suspension is the best car I've ever driven... You didn't mention the difference in the gearbox in m/s mode compared to normal. it makes a huge difference to how the car drives. Also, adaptive suspension is a must have on this car. it truly transforms the car from cruiser to racer.
This is my favourite BMW of all time!

Just collected my new 435 d xDrive M power today with most packages. Woweee. Hilarious a few people really want to race which is a bit sad and on the motorway the usual tailgater types just get left behind when the road is clear in front. They just back off pronto knowing they have no chance. Need to be careful these cars are quick with plenty of torque. One of the most unstated vehicles on the road today. He's right ignore the d on the badge at the rear. This review sums up the car 100% accurate, bang on and fair.
Clonmore lol I love that feeling, had mine remapped and de badged for extra fun. The only thing to “give it to me” was a big white Tesla 4x4......... f**k me that thing moved

Really got to put mine on here. Its a 435D Msport, Wagner Evo intercooler, Stage 2 remap with DPF removal, K&N induction and Stage 2 Gearbox remap. 435bhp on dyno and sub 4 secs 0-60. Since remap over a year ago its averaged 39mpg! These cars are so under estimated. God knows what it would do with Garrett turbo upgrade. Also had it lowered by 25mm, looks stunning, no horrible wheel arch gaps and handles like its on rails.

sub 4 seconds? That should be hitting not much over 3 seconds at that power with the right surface and tyres. 3.5 seconds here and only at 410bhp. Got a hybrid big side turbo on but still needs tuning in. Old turbo died so had to be changed and that was my cheapest option funnily enough as my mate was selling it.
I absolutely agree that the car should have some extra in the back so as to be able to differentiate it from its small brothers

I have no idea, I have one and even stock it’s disgustingly quick. Plus, it’s a great car.
Let it be understated. I have one with a stage one remap and a larger intercooler to keep the temps safe. Got 419.5 BJP and 756Nm torque. It's a missile at the lights. Ha e surprised a few people with it who think/thought their hot hatch was quick lol Whoooosh!

Decent tyres and dry weather would see 0-60 in under 4 seconds. I managed a Porsche worrying 3.8 seconds last year.

Was a bit of a shock when I first saw this video a couple of years back. As at the time I had just bought a grey fully loaded 435d from Maidenhead BMW... sure enough it was this one, the last location in the BMW connected app made it a 99.999% certainty. Whilst the laser jammer was being removed (yep, so much for the 100+ point bmw used car check, 'defense mode activated' lol) by the dealer. They had the motherland scan the ECU block by block, as I wasn't happy that they flogged me a tuned car. Well if this car was tuned by Birds then they did a cracking job reversing the tune, which confused BMW as they said the intercooler was different in the video and that had been put back to standard. They were like why change the intercooler without tuning. So they couldn't figure it out, and the car didn't get flagged. So to keep me happy they agreed to fix a few things and ran the car for a year. Of course the first thing I did was put on some ACS springs to get rid of the crazy ride height... :)

Just had my 335d xdrive remapped at DR Remaps to stage1 . Currently 403hp & 723nm torque 533 ft lbs . Thinking of upgrading intercooler and a 3" exhaust .

I just compare this car to f80 m3 which has too much different concept, the gas, style... and so on.

Hi there. This 435 is a very lovely car and is SO fast ! However for my own car I must admit to being an Audi fan and I like petrol cars, so I drive an S4.

The best thing to do is speak the Kevin at Birds (details in description) and he'll give you all the info you need about warranties.

No problems during the time he owned the car, but the owner no longer has it :-(
The thing I prefer on this cars (435, 440 now) is that they are almost as fast as the M's without having all the crazy styling (wich I don't really like)

The best thing to do is to give Birds, the specialist that did the work on this car, a call. They will talk through what you want doing and give you a price.
Andy B, it will be really expensive they a rip off company. They over charge you for the warranty, which tbh u dont need. Theres loads of mapped 335d/435d with 0 issues. Just go to Unicorn. They do so many 335d/435d
Till it will reach 124mph it might run with m4, but after that speed m4 will go away.
You have to check 0-62mph, but on gps, not clasters.

Hi there pal, nice video. I have had a remap on the same car by celtic tuning and when I do hard acceleration, I get a lot of black smoke. Any ideas what it might be? EGR, air breather, excess fuel, your pal have any suggestions? (bearing in mind no uprated intercooler 387bhp) cheers

TechFreaks most probably a poor remap. Normally you’d expect just a slight increase in smoke with a stage one remap. Even with DPF removal and good remap it shouldn’t smoke too bad.

@@tonyappleton2941 it's the dpf was completely gutted. Doesnt do it the winter. But much more visible in summer due to temp. The density of the air in the winter prevents it and performance is also significantly better
Got one a couple of months back, remapping it soon! 60mpg easy if you stick cruise on at 70mph but, difficult to stick to that lol

@@PetrolPed I can report that it’ll easily take a stock M4 Competition on full acceleration (back road driving). Still got the MPG in eco mode but, wow I see why they’re called M4 killers!
I have a tuned 435d Xdrive, 390hp, it’s fast but there’s no way my car would kill an M4...also, it won’t get anywhere near 60mpg at 70mph.
@@mrjpcullen9315 Well I’ve got over 60mpg multiple times in eco mode at 70mph. The figures at the pump confirms it’s pretty much bang on too so I must just be lucky. Mine is also remapped to 390bhp/750nm so that may play into it too. Since this comment I’ve driven back roads with an M4 Comp and every time he was flat out I was catching him even with a passenger in my car, only because of the torque I’d imagine. I’ve seen both happen personally multiple times so I don’t know what more I can say. Regardless it’s a damn good car! Although it doesn’t feel overly quick until it’s funded, it’s so smooth as stock.

Has the owner seen any drop in mpg in comfort mode due to the tuning? Or loss of traction compared to standard?
Would love to get my 435d tuned up to near 400bhp, but worried that the car would have some extra mechanical problems due to the increased power/torque going through the system.
MPG figures in Comfort Mode are very similar to standard. High 40s mpg well achievable. Put it in Sport or Sport + and it still drives with good mpg until you put your foot down. Traction helped by the X Drive 4 wheel drive. This test was in the wet and didn't have any traction problems.
The next upgrade planned is to the brakes !
Drive train is more than able to deal with it. If Hartge do the work your BMW warranty is still valid.

Shifting was pretty good. I prefer the S Tronic box on my S4 though 😜
@@PetrolPed Petrol Ped, I know this is an old post but I am looking to choose between an B8.5 S5 V6T and the 435d. The 435d is cheaper to buy, fuel, tax, insure and is the more sensible option (but still bloody quick).....but the S4 sounds so much better. Which did you prefer out of your S4 and the 435d? Head says the 435d but heart says S4 (or S5).

sport+ doest NOT turn off the traction control, It allows a small amount of slip thats all. get the tail going and it will pull it back in. "DSC OFF" turns the traction control off.
Jason Randall you sure coz I tried it and the car goes mental even though its xdrive.
How much is a re-map? Might be able to afford one as I’ve not spent a jot in lockdown?!
Remaps can be quite reasonable but sometimes you might need to upgrade intercoolers and other hardware which brings the price up 👍
I have a Celtic map, £300. No need for hardware. They put it on the rolling road and it was 398 and just under 600lb/ft (813 Nm). Consistent 3.8 0-60 using launch control (standard fit).
Am I wrong in thinking the max load threw the ZF gearbox safely was 700nm?. Could be wrong?

its not nonsense, my work mate has an m4 and we often race home he even admits he cant get past me my car has uprated suspension and 400bhp map, even slightly damp he cant get near on twisty roads.
they should do a 440d with the 381BHP 3.0 tri-turbo diesel engine in it and remap that then would definitely smoke an M4

I just spoke to Birds to confirm the BMW warranty and got conflicting info, they say that it is not a Hartge remap but a Birds own and that they would cover any issues caused by it rather than it being a BMW approved part. You said your mate did a lot of research, was this what he found too?

Just spoken to my mate. That was his understanding too so my bad for thinking the warranty was with BMW. The warranty with Birds is very comprehensive apparently and this remap only takes the engine to 90% of its potential. They could get up to 420bhp and 790 torques apparently !!

What torque is the gearbox rated upto is the remap torque fine

gearbox is ZF8HP70, 700nM rated, above that and it's your risk.

dtprodrive their not all that quick Left one for dust in my B9 S4 saloon. He couldn’t keep up.
But three gears likely takes you to 85-90 mph and to be honest you wouldn't have your licence very long going faster than that.
Sport's display is showing a maximum of 240kw. Which is just iver 320bhp. When mapped it changes. Sorry but that cars standard and the intercooler that was shown is also the standard. And yes i know this was posted 7 years ago but wanted prove a point 😂

+Bert Jambo My mate did a huge amount of research before he did the upgrade. He spoke to AC Schnitzer as well. I know it expensive but the quality of the work was very high and the results are amazing. Lots of power and torque but for me the most impressive thing is the way it is delivered. So usable.
+Bert Jambo You can get tuning boxes for £300 but they don't work very well, throw up errors and they screw up the diesel particulate filters! Not recommended!

Engine conversion
for F32 435d xDrive (based on 230 kW / 313 hp)
266 kW (362 hp) / 4400 rpm 730 Nm (lb-ft 538) / 1800 rpm
that's for stock car, this one in video got new intercooler (and probably downpipe) - makes a huge difference, trust me. I've done that to my 335d - 360bhp and 730Nm of torque without touching turbos (actually running it at 23psi instead of 24 - to prolong their lifespan) My car now got 168k miles on the clock and just recently eat alive S5 like it was nothing ;)
who told u that 23 psi will prolong turbo lifespan? i have a constant problems with vacuum and boost....(pipes, actuators, etc....) this car is constantly broken....i restore power for 2-3 weeks and then it's gone and diagnostics never show any fault....
what exactly makes a difference? intercooler? not have 600 for that....or downpipe? well, my dpf will fail in a year, so i might buy it for 250 euros, but not a fan of black smoke behind me, so i dont know
+Martin max - best tuner in Krakow, that done my 120d and 335d - both done more than 170k miles and have original turbos. 335d with Wagner intercooler and downpipe at high speed would pump too much air for those small westgates to cope with - hence go into limp mode (quite common) above 130mph. If your car doesn't show any faults + that's a sign of crappy remap. Whoever done it, erased all/most fault warnings. I've seen that before. On my mates car you could take engine out and computer wouldn't notice 😀
+Martin max - black smoke? Only if someone remapped your car from a laptop and its overfuelled, not proper rolling road remap. Where do you live? I can find you someone decent to sort your car.

Kamrin its a major rip off is hartge, for just a simple remap your looking at atleast £1700 thats just a remap. Just go to Unicorn. For £1600 you will get remap, alpina gearbox flash, k and n filter and wagner evo 2 competition intercooler.

Torque, 4 wheel drive and drivability for the average driver. Especially in the wet :-)
This is indeed a very stupid comment. A 540d has 320hp and is 100kg heavier than a 540i which has 340hp... Guess which one is quicker? Yep the 540d. The secret lies in the torque of the diesel.
Both of those figures are peak horsepower at a given gear and rpm. If the M4 has a road that allows it to stay in the optimum gear at the optimum rpm it will be faster than this car, however, the diesel has more power in most gears at most rpms and will be faster in most instances.

often race my mates m4 home he admits mine as quick. and if damp cant get near me. mine has uprated springs and 400bhp map. Standard the car has way more torque than an M4 and mapped its 550 ft ibs of torque.

great car. but i can't figure out how bmw can't do a decent ride height ? my F10 Msport sits as high as this 435 especially at the front. it just looks so shit !

'724 torgue's', do you not mean 724 newton meters lol. The car must of had a stage 2 remap to get these sorts of figures ie: removing the dpf. You wouldn't get that with a simple stage 1 engine tune.
Torques is not a measurement so you're not being clever. You think he's confusing lbs/ft with NM? This car has around 530 lbs/ft but the idrive display is in NM.
To be honest, in the heat of the moment when filming, I couldn't remember weather the number was Ibs/ft or Nm so I just went for the Top Gear description of 'Torques' ! I know there is no such thing...I'm not a complete Muppet ;-)

why all of you believe that? 700nm is on safe side..its very very safe at 700nm..easy at 800nm reliable
I know this is 2 years later but these boxes are insane, many of these 3.0d's have over 900nm easily and realiably.
So what's the point of an M4 then?
absolute zero m4 is for the track.
M4 would destroy this in the corners, like DESTROY! Straight line the 335 would give it a good go especially with the X driver

@@yanniblumstein1 Power to weight ratio plus the fact its a Diesel at 1700kg vs 1600kg is crazy weight even with the tune the M4 or M3 would smoke you in a straight line and remember because its 4 wheel drive the power delivery will be split between front and back axle. you would need at least another 90 hp to beat the S55 engine in a straight line never mind the twisties

Hartge and AC Schnitzer are approved tuners for BMW and my understanding is that their work does not effect the BMW warranty. However, you should always check before you get work done.
Fuel economy in normal driving conditions is unchanged. Clearly when you put you foot down the MPG is going to be effected.

i think that is the one thing that is putting me off xdrive :/ im looking at getting a new 4 series this winter but i feel xdrive is half pointless with our average weather and it just sits high :(
yes they sit high, ive got mine on H&R springs sits 20mm lower and running at 400bhp.
Xdrive cars are 20mm higher than a 2wd car
@@PetrolPed X drive cars come with SE suspension as standard regardless of M Sport spec. The optional adaptive suspension is way better but still sits on SE springs.
The box is only rated to 700nm

Correct! A stage 1 will bring it to 360bhp and 700nm on the dot so happy days. There are 3 variations of this gear box and this model has 700nm max torque rating the zf8hp90 has the uprated values for M cars etc

I drove 354hp e60 535d, and stock M4. M4 is much faster.
M4 may be much faster than the far heavier 354bhp 5 series but thats to be expected. Autocar tested an Alpina D3 (RWD and based on 335D). It has 349bhp and pretty much sat neck and neck with a M4. This tuned 435D will easily give an M4 a run for its money up to 100mph.

BMW cheat ! They actually enhance the exhaust/engine noise through the speakers of the stereo !
As far as having more power than the petrol engine, well the diesel unit is built to operate well within their capability to hit economy and emissions figured. It is truly amazing what Hartge manage to get out of it. The most impressive thing was how the power is delivered. So usable.

Lights to lights and in and out of traffic. A mapped 335d/435d would leave an m3/m4 for dead. Only after say 100-120mph will m3/m4 reel it in. But how are u gna hit that speed between the lights which is wer most races happen

From a standing start maybe, but on the roll an M4 will destroy it, but day 2 day the 35d is mega except the noise.
Andy Modfat on a day to day m4 is shit. Even a lil bit of rain and itl struggle to lose a standard GTI. Ive raced a m3 in my 335d f30 which is stock and in and out he cudnt keep up.

Mike Mccarthy well my gf dad has a a4 3.0 TDI with 320bhp and he raced the 2017 model GT-R and although he won he was only 3 car lengths ahead at 150 mph
Hi i did have an Audi A5 3.0 tdi quattro which was remaped by AMD and i can tell you its no match for a GTR i can only guess the GTR was chilling.
And the rest of us believe exactly none of that story.
I didnt mean we won the gtr won but as i said we were about 3 car lenths behind, and he stopped pulling ahead at 150. Its because the tdi has so much more torque than a gtr

It Will. I have a 435d xdrive, with the m-package (m 8-speed steptronic) (m-suspension) (m-performance brakes) and so on. It has a a chip tuning and modified intercooler. Which gives it 388bhp and 740nm. Goes from 0-60mph in 4 seconds straight with launch controle, And with the xdrive it has traction all the time. So an m4 is no match.
Much more torque an plus x drive so yes it more than likely will beat an m4

And then what? Is launching a car in heavy rain the new metric? M4 does 0-60 in 3.7 and the 1/4 mile in 12.0s. This diesel, although fast, is not going to do that. So the phrase "an M4 can pull up next to you and you'll have it" is nonsense.
i see where you are coming from but i can see his perspective. at a street race lets say you usually dont race above 70-80mph and that is where the m4 shines but the 435d has all wheel drive and 800tq that can probably get off the line as fast or maybe faster than a m4 take it to the drag strip or the track and it will get destroyed since its 4500lbs
On what planet does a stock M4 do 0-60 in 3.7 seconds? Certainly not on this one. The AWD 435D will get off the line far quicker than the RWD M4, but once the M4 hooks up it will slowly reel in the 435D.

Basically rwd vs 4wd. Would probably depend a lot on weather/available grip.
I did 0-60 in the wet in 4 seconds flat...try doing that in a rear wheel drive M4. This car is easier to drive quickly for the everyday driver.

anything other then a dry sunny day his 435d will show a m3/m4 a clean set of heals. I had same problem in E60 M5 always struggling for traction. Now i have xdrive would never look back

In principle, thats the same as me saying, this 435D would eat a Nissan GTR for breakfast too! .....Because the gearbox had just gone bang and the driver couldn't afford the £14,000 repair bill.. haha

Hi there pal, nice video. I have had a remap on the same car by celtic tuning and when I do hard acceleration, I get a lot of black smoke. Any ideas what it might be? EGR, air breather, excess fuel, your pal have any suggestions? (bearing in mind no uprated intercooler 387bhp). Cheers
