Fly Tying - Slab Crappie Floating Minnow

This minnow pattern floats like a cork and will be effective when crappie are in shallow water. Or if you want to fish with a dropper fly , this fly will be a good choice for spooky fish as well. It is a very simple pattern and one of the flies that you"ill want to keep in your fly box for crappie as well as other warm-water fish.

So how is the action of the lure? Does it have action like a crankbait or does it move like a stick in the water?

I have made quiet a few out of that same material green black silver red blue. A whole roll at the dollar store. Try wrapping masking tape in a circular pattern around the tubing . Get a tube of clear silicon and squirt in the tubing and it gives you a bit more weight to the bait.also you can squirt silicon in the tubing without wrapping it and you get a textured effect,as the silicon extrudes from within the tube.

Beautiful! I tie mine like Larry Dalhberg tied his floating minnow but used similar foam to yours, not the styrofoam meat trays Larry used. My foam came from medicine bottles. Round discs that I cut sections off and had a hump back profile when finished. When the house we rented was being renovated by the airport for sound proofing, insulation, and central air (that was a SWEET deal!) a contractor gave me all the backer rod I wanted in 3 different diameters. That same foam makes a great float for fishing fishing also. I'll have to try your method for my next minnows. That was nice mylar you had, where did you get it? I like everglow tubing too, cascade crest brand, but hard to find a dealer or shop. Nice patterns and tying skills my friend, thanks. 👌
