    I was invited to fish a lake in Texas known for large basketball-belly largemouths. I had no idea what fly to take but I brought a few chartreuse clausers and that's all I fished. We anchored the boat and I hooked one about 20 feet off the bow. Just my luck the boat battery died and we couldn't chase the fish. It ran and ran and I palmed like crazy but it never slowed down. You could tell by the tail shake it was a huge fish. It got to the end of my backing and just snapped it right off. The battery never started and we had to paddle the bass boat nonstop against a stiff breeze 2 miles back to the ramp. We got there around midnight but I'd gladly go back to Lake Ivie with a few clauser minnows and a spare battery.

    My favorite fly..in any size, #10, size of a quarter to 2/0, 6 inches long. Using 3wt up to 8wt rods. Unbelievable how many different fish I’ve caught with it. Thanks Tim! 👍👌🎣

    There's a lot to be said for a clouser. I recently tied some marked up like a brook trout. Orange belly, slight clump of white under a olive wing. With 2 strands of orange crystal flash on each side. This color scheme works well on crappie and smallmouth. I prefer a size 10 tmc 5262 hook with either mini lead dumbell eyes or large beadchain eyes and I cut my bucktail to 1 1/2 hookshank in length. So basically it's a panfish sized clouser, but smallmouth don't seem to mind

    Nice one Tim, a favorite with the smallmouth bass here in Canada. Red and white is also popular with the fish as is olive and yellow in the lakes where perch are the main forage. Good luck and decent weather on your trip!

    My favorite fly hands down. I use them year round for hybrid striped bass and land locked true striped bass here on a 9 wt. They ALWAYS produce and like you said you can crank out a bunch of them quickly.

    I have an alt built on this that has produced consistently, add a second bead,at top of hook curve, whip the fibre behind, gives it a "body" adding length to the fibre is a must though.

    I like the red dubbing for the gills, but it looks like in the end they are completely covered by the thread and buck tails. Am I just not able to clearly see them on the video?

    Do you ever use body braid to cover the bucktail behind the eyes? I think it looks good.

    How long does it take you to do a fly? Minutes or hours? Are you waiting for each step to dry before the next? Thanks

    • @tightlinevideo
      @tightlinevideo  Рік тому +1

      Minutes. A fly like this about 3 minutes. Only time I let glue dry is when the fly is complete and the final coat of head cement is put on.

    Awesome video, I’ve had great success in SE Ohio this year fishing strictly Clouser minnows, I have noticed that when I use hard as nails and zap a gap in combination there seems to be some reaction that leads to a white substrate on the back of the head near the dumbbell eyes, have you noticed this at all using Z-ment?

    • @tightlinevideo
      @tightlinevideo  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah I have definitely noticed the white, chalky stuff forming sometimes. I think it is just what all super glues (cyanoacrylates) do when the set/cure. I've seen them do it both with and without Sally Hansens. I know it doesn't look great, but to me it is a small price to pay for a more durable Clouser. The other option and probably the best one is a combination of UV cure resins. First something nice and thin like Solarize Bone Dry to really sink into the bucktail and thread wraps. Cure that, then top coat with something a bit thicker and cure that. Unfortunately, I can no longer use UV cure resins as I have developed a bad sensitivity to them. And yes, I have tried virtually every brand available with the same results. It's a real bummer as I became very accustomed to tying with the stuff.

    • @stingray43550
      @stingray43550 2 роки тому

      @@tightlinevideo thanks for the info!! I was worried about the combination of the two deteriorating the thread wraps but if it’s just a regular thing with superglue I will definitely continue to use both the glue and Sally Hansen’s, I tend to lose Clousers to boulders and tree limbs more than fish tearing them up anyway, thanks for all the content and good luck on your trip!!

  • @seanhyslop2984

    Thanks for another great video! I mean no disrespect by this but the head on that fly looks a lot bulkier than on your previous clouser videos. Do you find that with the extra weight from a larger head, it still consistently rides upright or do you get more rolling action from the fly?

    • @tightlinevideo
      @tightlinevideo  2 роки тому +7

      You are correct, the head is a bit bulkier on this particular fly. I have noticed this before with both Clousers and Deceivers. As I work my way from up near the tip areas of both bucktails being used, I am tying with progressively thicker hair (it's just the nature of bucktail hair). The fly on the video was, I think, the 11th or maybe 12th out of the 15 I tied. Looking at the group of 15 as a whole there is a marked difference between the head size of the first one tied and the last. In terms of consistency, to me it is more important to have equal amounts and lengths of the bucktail than head size. As far as weight and action goes, the Clouser with the smallest head of the group weighed 1.1 grams while the one tied in the video weighed 1.16 grams. I can't imagine 6/100ths of a gram having any effect on action or performance. Great question though, really got me thinking.

      @mar83161 2 роки тому

      Wow Tim, what an explanation... now you have ME thinking!

    • @seanhyslop2984
      @seanhyslop2984 2 роки тому

      Thanks, Tim, for the in depth response. Food for thought for those interested, I first suggested that by adding weight in the head, that would make the fly roll more. I think a better way to describe what I was trying to say is that by having a bulkier head, the weight distribution is more spread out which could cause the fly to roll more. Visually, when I see a slim head, the dumbbell eyes clearly stand out as a big keel for the fly. But when I see a fly where the dumbbell eyes seem to sink in the head, I start wondering if they are doing their job of keeping the point up or if the fly would be just as happy to be sideways or upside down. Of course, this could just be my unique perception. I really like how Tim gave us the mass differences between a bulky and slim headed flies. I have to say that I agree with him, 6/100ths of a gram is not going to have an effect on how well the dumbbell eyes keel the fly. Especially since it is likely to be from a few extra hairs which are spread throughout the whole fly and not concentrated on the top of the head how it might appear. Thanks again, Tim!

    How important do you think the color of the eyes is? You have inspired me to whip a few of these up as they have always vexed me to a degree but this video has given me something to think about. I have a good deal of bead chain that I could use for eyes. Do you think that will be sufficient?

    • @tightlinevideo
      @tightlinevideo  2 роки тому

      I wouldn't worry too much about eye color. I do prefer painted eyes though, with nice pupils. More for me than the fish.

    Why do you put the eyes so close to the eye of the hook? I've watched Bob Clouser tie his minnow and he puts the eyes at least 1/3 of the hook length back from the front of the hook.

    • @tightlinevideo
      @tightlinevideo  2 роки тому +1

      It is really just a matter of personal preference. To me, the difference in movement between the two underwater is negligible. I think the more forward eyes, like I tie them, better represents the positioning of the eyes on natural baitfish.
