Amphibious warfare is treacherous; moving a military force from sea to land can turn mistakes into disasters. As the US military begins to focus its attention on the Asia-Pacific region, an area of increasing military tension and territorial disputes, the Marine Corps is being called upon to return to its roots in amphibious assault. VICE News visited RIMPAC, the world's largest maritime warfare exercise, to see how the Marine Corps is testing new technologies and tactics to face the new challenges of amphibious warfare and remain the world's preeminent amphibious force in the future.

Marines in Normandy???? Didnt this guy do any research on the subject??? The ARMY landed in Normandy, the Marines were in the Pacific. What a waste.
T0750 I think there actually were some marines at D-day they had some kind of special mission to climb on there and destroy some heave artillery if im not mistaken.
DutchPool if u are referring to Pointe du Hoc, those were Army Rangers.
Marines did help make the operation but weren't in it. If I remember correctly.
+TheJefrey24 never heard that before, link?
***** I don't remember where I looked it up or where I found. Said something about Marines helping out the operation but weren't in it. That I did a quick search "Marines helped with Normandy". I ain't sure if there is anything official. I haven't fully looked into it, curiosity got to me when I've found something else interesting when I was looking up the Normandy landings. Sorry if I didnt had the link though. More or less I should of actually said "I think" then "If I remember correctly" lol
Marines never landed in Germany. They were out island hopping and kicking imperial ass in the Pacific
Chuck Finley Normandy is in France, not Germany.
I could argue that since it was conquered by Germany at the time it was German land, or we can say that I wasn't paying attention to what I was typing (which is what happened bc I'm really good at geography just wasn't paying attention I suppose lol) and just go on with our lives...
It wasn't Germany, it was German occupied France. The geography of the world doesn't change because of who owns the land, countries are countries. Politics are a whole different story.
Chuck Finley France didn't come together because of political leaders, it was this bad-ass little bitch named Joan.
Thomuslim Countries are political entities. At that time, "France" as a political entity ceased to exist, so you could say it was Germany. Otherwise, it's all just land.
Talks about US Marines:
Half the videos are australian
It was a joint exercise with American and Australian marines the marines do that alot they like to do these exercises with different forces
Aye
Yes but funded by U.S. tax payers/consumers.
The start was Kiwis guys
that is what a joint exercise is, pal.
Don't bother going any further. This comment sections a lost cause

Indeed. We must exterminatus it.

But Marines took the Pacific islands.
Iwo Jima and Okinawa were stormed by Marines but ok

im not sure what your saying, are you saying that only the US stormed normandy?, or that the service branch was involved in it?
He means service branch, there wasn't any marine unit involved in Normandy.
hate how there were Australians everywhere but they weren't mentioned once :(
+Lethal Bacon one day we'll get a mention ahahah

Did anyone else see the Australian Military at the start?
I did :)
Yes! So happy to see our troops.
They were all through out it. New Zealand's military looks very similar too, but I'm sure they were both there
Its a shame that they're replacing that sexy camo.

"Including the US" shows Australian soldiers, Why no mention of the ADF although they are seen very often?
Yeah I noticed that
same reason they talk about how amazing the mv-22 osprey is, yet ever shot and every troop is on or around a ch-53e... they have target points to talk about, everything else gets cut out.
US media doesn't mention foreign militaries if they don't have to
Ameericaaa, fuck yeah!
Saxon Weed because the exercise is being hosted by the US even though there are other foreign militaries.
I served in the Navy on the Nimitz over 20 years ago. That ship is still in service, but retiring in a few years. I wish that some of the equipment we see here was available back then. It's amazing to see how different our military is today. The Osprey and Cujo would seem almost like Star Wars tech for us back then.
Most mentions of "Marines" when they were Australian Forces...
Yeah, the Aussies are one of the largest participants in these, but are never mentioned by Americans. I wonder why?
Confused Transformer because it's an exercise being hosted by the US and it was organized by the US dipshit. There many other nations like the Japanese there and I don't see any Japanese getting butt hurt about how little screen time they got
KanadeHaruhi He wasn't butthurt about how little screen time. He was butthurt about how we had most of the screen time and still no mention. People from the USA especially seem to ignore our existence even though our special forces (SAS) is on par with the British SAS which is definitely the best special force in the world.
He didn't mention Australia because this video was about the RIMPAC exercise, and was focusing mostly on the US Marines and Chinese Navy.
I'm from Palau , and knowing there a US ship out there named after one of our 16 states (Peliliu) is such a honor. Thank you USA 🇺🇸🇵🇼

i would believe the name would be after a battle during ww2, seeing as most LHD’s are named after Battle’s Marines partook in. It’s a pretty cool thing, and it honors the servicemen and women that died for liberation of the Pacific, and the rest of the world.

John Cirry That's the sort of ignorance I expect from those that have never experienced fighting or war. Good job.
its good to have this kind of people, i wish they are more people like you more volunteer in the army no need to draft men who doesn't want to join the army
John Cirry
You do realize that warriors are obsolete today? All warrior skills that one might have are useless when IED blasts you. Not to mention that on modern battlefield skinny guy that can't do one push up can kill you with a press of a button. War is no longer about warriors, it's about organization, technology and resources. If you want to be just part of some number displayed on some statistic by all means, join the army.

Marines = My Ass Rides In Navy Equipment, Sir!
I wish the United States made it easier for Irish soldiers to join their army. We are some of the finest soldiers the world has ever seen, and have been excellent warriors ever since the Celtic times. We successfully defeated the single largest empire in the world at the time when we defeated the British in July 1921. Some of the finest Brigades of the American Civil War were comprised solely of Irish heroes, and if only the US could make military service a quicker path to citizenship, like Romney suggested during the last presidential debates, the US would not regret it for a second.
Jack Reaper its not about winning wars.. go check out the Irish guards or royal irish regiment..
Dude Ireland has some great armed forces but just very small we should have a foreign regiment in the u.s army
***** I'm no expert, but they train you to be like that, they don't expect anyone to be like that without special training. The main requirement is tolerance to pain. Of course, this is based off a youtube video I saw, so 50% chance I'm completely wrong.
I am glad you like our military but shouldn't you want to fight for Ireland, your homeland? You may or may not be able to be in our military but many of us Americans do appreciate the support and would be honored to fight alongside our European brothers if the need was there. Some of our people may act like asses but we are happy for the support no matter how stubborn some of us come off. :) My family being of Irish descent I would be more than grateful to fight alongside the Irishmen any time, any place :)
This is a weirdly specific political comment, when the video is about war training exercises in the Pacific.
2:28 Normandy? The US Marine Corps didn't participate in the European theater it was all Pacific
+lance chastain Well they did to an extremely, extremely limited extent. I mean there may have been only a few hundred marines present at Normandy, compared to the 156,000 troops from other services. While there were virtually none, there still were.

Yes, many beach landings in the Pacific, but the reporter specifically mentions the Normandy landings.

Let's face it, the age of big war is over. Thanks to globalization, I doubt I'll ever have to land on the Shanghai beaches, thank goodness.

Luis Martinez Eh, I doubt the Chinese would have the metal and logistics to strike at an American state. Not with the Naval stations and the hard-chargers at Oki. in their way.
***** that sentiment was common before world war 1 and world war 2. With new technology before wwi, nobody thought that anyone would engage in global war. It would be too destructive. War between nations was far more profitable during the Napoleonic era and alliances were too widespread and complicated for a major war to result. Then world war 1 happened. Then we saw the destruction of world war 1 and we thought that a war like that would never happened again. It was called "the war to end all wars." Nobody thought that another widespread war would come. Then world war 2 happened. Now, we don't think that big war will ever happen again. Will we be wrong again?
Smithy0013 You know now that you mention it, China has been rattling the chains quite a bit...I don't think they would attack us though because we still owe them big time and they would never get their money back.

Amphibious Warfare is by far the most complex form of combat operations and US Navy and Marines are also by far the most experienced and most capable warriors that can do those kind of missions. Military is not a waste of money. The US is a global superpower and the strongest country on earth. We are essentially the current leading imperial power, similar to that of the Romans, Mongols, or Macedonians. We are despised and disliked across the globe. We are respected due to our power. We're not immune to invasion or conflict. If for a second we begin to allow our military to weaken, and essentially become a soft nation relying on the hope that other countries will leave us alone, that's foolish. Russia is powerful, as well as China. They don't like us very much, but they respect our power. If we had a weaker military than them, they would call the shots.
Budder Teets You're decaying from the inside though. As Martin Luther King said "A country that spends more on militarism than healthcare is on the path to spiritual death"....
Greg Rolles Lol we are not "decaying from the inside", and just because MLK said it does not mean its always true.
If you think RIMPAC leaders actually have people's interest in their hearts and not the pursuit of power, you must be naive.

I quite enjoyed this documentary. It strayed a bit away from the usually controversial religion and governmental topics while still sticking to important things.
I'm also glad to see we as a country are trying to mend the broken bonds with China. I'd say inviting them to military exercises is a good step in the right direction and something we should continue if we want to stay on their better side. (AKA not the side with North Korea)

Don't we spend more than the top 10 nations combined on our military? 50% of our national budget? For that reason alone we have the best military, even if you grant a certain percentage of wasteful spending. Too bad we don't cut just a little bit to focus on education, social programs, space exploration, etc.
The U.S is a nation born out of war. It is a Military Nation and will always be one.
al gore If you want better education, just give the taxpayers and the states their money back and they will take care of it. Washington just pisses 95% of federal $ down the rathole.
hallmobility but then states like Mississippi and Alabama will become even more poor.
al gore We do spend more on military than the top ten nations combined, but thats because we pay for other european countries armies. If we were to only pay for ourselves it would be much smaller. HOWEVER, we do NOT spend 50% of our budget on military. It doesn't even come close to the amount we spend on welfare. I do agree with the space exploration though. Stop abortion clinic and start creating cities on Mars.

The Bushido code is a modern myth -_- It was made up in the Japanese Meiji period to romanticize feudal Japan.
12:55 That U.S. general says, "The day is coming, be ready for that fight". Does anyone ever stop and ask him, "Why do we have to have this fight"? Why do we feel we are heading towards this big fight? The sad thing is this big fight we will probably have will not be fought by those in power now, but will be fought by their children, the next generation, unfortunately.
The military's job is not to question the feasibility or preferability of war. It is to adapt to and destroy the enemy. They are merely implementors of foreign policy. If you care so much about the direction of our foreign policy, pay attention to the leaders that we elect and the career governing professionals that they work with. That is who send our boys to war, not a general.
china will have revenge on japan for the hundreds of thousands japan killed in china
It's just inspirational talk. Don't see anything wrong really. People in the military are warriors, i guess. So it is not very surprising for them to talk this way.
Japan and China are heading down te road of war ever since ww2 china is still mad at japan and if saw what's going on over their it isn't going well so the speech was necessary.

The brainwashing worked well on you. Now go and defend your masters. If that arrogant moron would have understood anything about the bushido-codex he would NOT behave in such arrogant manner in front of guest from a different nation but act modest and friendly and tell those who he is given to teach about the true inner bushido-spirit which means to fight your own illusions (i.e. wanting to control the world) and not an outward enemy.
that hospital ship is so cool
Are those Airsoft guns?
Probably
No, they're normal guns loaded with blanks. The red tip is used to indicate the weapon is not lethaly loaded (i believe its removable) and so no one get hurt since even blanks can harm and even kill a person.
Kacey Keusch actually it's probably simunition which is similar to a pellet from a paintball gun just shaped like a bullet. Some of the sailors and marines may have used live fire for some exercises though.
Henry Davis I noticed a bit of live fire in the start. As for simunition, I never knew what they where called so thank you for the info.
ibleedcarolinablue A few comments before yours someone stated that the ammunition being fired at the dummies was probably live. And yet you ranted and raved about how no one knows anything but you. Stop being so arrogant. Being a player of video games does not immediately disqualify a person from having an accurate opinion about war, weapons, tactics or war games. What qualifies or disqualifies them is whether they know what the facts or not.
