When I was awaiting orders, I really wanted to serve on a carrier. I had never heard of amphibious assault ships before. While part of me still wishes I could’ve seen the inside of a modern day carrier, I will never regret my time spent on USS Tarawa LHA 1.

That’s why it was best to be assigned to a ship in Japan. Deployments were shorter due to not having to transit across the Pacific coming and going. They seemed to fly by.

My grandfather who served in the Royal Navy pulled many American sailors out of the sea after they were sunk or shot down, he complained about how heavy they were. Things have moved on a notch since then.
Americans did amphibious landings on the shores of Lingayen Gulf, Pangasinan Province, Philippines. From there they headed south to Manila as part of MacArthur's push to liberate the country from Japanese forces. I can imagine that the landings would seem like aliens arriving since the technology used at the time was so advanced in comparison to anything seen by the locals in the area of the beach landings.
@@PP-qw3yr Go on then, explain how amphibious assault ships are not advanced compared to the locals of a small area of the Philippines during WW2? I think you misunderstood the OP here.
Did a med float on the Wasp in 98 while in the Corps. I did actually like being on the ship but was damn sure ready to be back at Lejeune after 6 months. The LCAC's are cool. Since I had a hardback humvee I was able to stay inside of it while on the lcac which was way better than being inside the normal troop area, could actually see everything that way.

MARG 1-86 Med deployment. November ‘85 - June ‘86. My company was aboard the LST USS Manitowoc (LST-1180). Other ships within the group was the USS Guadal Canal (LPH-7), the USS Ponce (LPD-13), the USS El Paso (LKA-117), and the USS Hermitage (LSD-34). I believe the Manitowoc was decommissioned in ‘89 and would later be sold to the Chinese Navy and became the Chung Ho. No idea where she is today. A few of these ships are coral reefs now- I think the Ponce may have been one of the last to be decommissioned in 2017.
